The Century-Old Reptile That Isn’t a Lizard: Meet the Tuatara

What reptile looks like a lizard but isn’t one? The tuatara, a rare reptile found only in New Zealand. It belongs to a different order from lizards: tuatara are the sole living representatives of Rhynchocephalia, while lizards belong to Squamata. Its century-old reputation and unusual anatomy make it easy to mistake for a lizard—but its lineage is distinct.

Why a tuatara is not a lizard

“Reptile” is the broad category; “lizard” is a narrower group within it. Tuatara are reptiles, but they are not lizards. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation describes them as “the last survivors of an order of reptiles that thrived in the age of the dinosaurs.” That order, Rhynchocephalia, is separate from Squamata, the order that includes lizards and snakes.

The tuatara’s resemblance to a lizard is superficial evidence, not its classification. It is the only living representative of its order, a distinction that makes it unusual among reptiles today.

How old do tuatara get?

A lifespan of 100 years or more is often associated with tuatara, but an exact maximum age is not firmly established. The Smithsonian described the species as having a “100-year-plus lifespan” in 2022. Te Ara: The Encyclopedia of New Zealand says some animals have reached 80 years and still appeared vigorous, while noting that the maximum lifespan is not known for certain. These descriptions support a reputation for exceptional longevity, not a confirmed age record for a particular individual.

What makes tuatara anatomy unusual?

The parietal “third eye”

Tuatara have a light-sensitive organ on the top of the head, often called a third eye. It is not a third forward-looking eye like the paired eyes used to form images. The New Zealand Herpetological Society describes the organ as photoreceptive and says it helps set circadian and seasonal cycles.

Teeth and a distinctive bite

The Smithsonian notes that tuatara teeth are fused to the jawbone. Their lower jaw also slides back and forth in a distinctive chewing action. These features are among the anatomical differences that distinguish tuatara from animals that merely look lizard-like.

An ancient lineage, not an animal from the dinosaur age

Tuatara are sometimes called “living fossils,” but that phrase needs care. Modern tuatara are living animals with their own evolutionary history; they are not unchanged fossils, and the animals alive today did not live alongside dinosaurs. Te Ara describes fossil relatives of the lineage from roughly 220 million years ago. That date refers to ancient relatives, not to the age of today’s tuatara.

The available sources establish that tuatara and lizards belong to distinct lineages, but they do not establish a precise date when those lineages diverged.

Where tuatara live and why conservation matters

Tuatara are endemic to New Zealand. The Department of Conservation describes them as rare and says they need active conservation management. Their conservation context includes offshore islands and restoration work such as rat eradication; conditions are not necessarily the same for every population.

A 2005 Department of Conservation recovery plan recorded that at least 10 of 40 known offshore-island populations had been lost within roughly the preceding century. Those are historical figures from that plan, not a current population count. The department’s species page is the more appropriate source for its present-tense conservation description.
