Short answer: You can buy a slip collar or slip lead for less than $20, but no collar makes training effective by itself. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based training for every dog and advises against aversive methods such as leash corrections, choke chains and other punishment. Treat the products below as inexpensive equipment for specific, supervised situations—not as a training method.
The shortlist compares current manufacturer listings observed on October 13, 2026. They are not independent test winners: no source establishes that one is more durable, comfortable or effective than another. Choose by configuration, measurements, handling needs and your training plan.

What a slip collar is—and what it is not
A slip collar is a loop that tightens through a sliding ring when tension is applied. A slip lead combines that loop collar and the leash in one piece. A separate slip collar needs a compatible leash; an integrated slip lead does not.
The tightening action is a handling characteristic, not evidence that a dog is learning. If a handler uses the loop to jerk, correct or punish, the pressure can become an aversive stimulus. AVSAB’s current public position (its 2021 Humane Dog Training Position Statement) says: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” Its statement specifically advises against leash corrections, choke chains and other physical or psychological punishment.

For that reason, the most responsible “best” choice under $20 is the one that fits the dog, stays under your control and is used while you reinforce desirable behavior. A harness, flat collar or properly fitted martingale may be safer for the job your dog actually needs.
Decide what job the equipment must do
Slip equipment is often chosen for a narrow handling task rather than everyday walking: moving a dog briefly between a crate and a ring, entering a show area, or managing a dog that already walks quietly and will not reverse out of the loop. That is different from teaching a puppy not to pull, walking a fearful dog through traffic, or managing a powerful dog that lunges. The latter situations call for a training plan and equipment selected for safety, not simply the cheapest loop.
Write down the setting before shopping. A four-foot lead can be easier to keep organized in a busy building; a six-foot lead offers more working room in a quiet area but creates more slack to manage. If several people will handle the dog, everyone should know how the loop is fitted, where the stop is set and when it must be removed.

Sub-$20 products found in current manufacturer listings
Prices below are snapshots from manufacturer or manufacturer-affiliated pages accessed October 13, 2026. Prices, sales and availability can change. A listing is not proof of independent quality, Amazon availability or training results.
| Product | Configuration | Observed price | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mendota Show Slip Leash | Integrated leash and sliding loop collar | $14.49 | Confirm the selected length, loop size and fit around the dog’s neck and head. |
| Mendota Petite Slip Collar | Separate nylon slip collar in the small-pet/show collection | From $7.49 | Measure both neck and head; buy a leash that is suitable for the collar and the dog. |
| Mendota Show Slip Collar | Separate show-style slip collar | $10.99 | Compare width, adjustment or stop features and whether the loop can pass safely over the head. |
| Mendota small slip lead | Integrated 3/8-inch lead in 4- or 6-foot lengths | $7.35 sale listing; another listing showed $21.49 | The manufacturer recommends it for dogs up to 50 pounds. Verify the live seller, length and price; the sale figure is not stable. |
| Mendota Show Loop Leash | 4-foot, 1/8-inch leash used alone or with a Show Slip Collar | $11.49 | This is a leash only, not a complete slip-collar setup. Confirm that the separate collar is compatible. |
Because the available listings contain no controlled tests, it would be misleading to rank these items for comfort, strength, durability or training effectiveness. The useful distinction is how each configuration fits your handling situation.
Integrated slip leads: one piece, fewer parts
The Show Slip Leash and the small 3/8-inch slip lead put the leash and loop collar together. That can be convenient for a quick transition, a show ring or a dog that already walks reliably and is unlikely to back out. It also means you cannot swap in a different collar without changing the entire lead.
The small lead is offered in 4- and 6-foot lengths, with the manufacturer’s recommendation for dogs weighing 50 pounds or less. That is manufacturer sizing guidance, not an independent load or safety test. A shorter lead gives less slack; a longer lead gives more room but can be harder to manage around traffic, other dogs or obstacles.

Separate slip collars: flexible, but require a leash and careful sizing
The Petite Slip Collar and Show Slip Collar are collars only. You must add a leash whose clip, width and strength are appropriate for the dog and the collar’s attachment point. Measure before ordering rather than assuming “petite” or “show” describes your dog’s neck size.
A separate collar can be useful when you already own a suitable leash or need different leash lengths for different settings. It also creates another connection to inspect: the collar ring, the leash clip and the point where the sliding loop closes.
Show Loop Leash: a leash-only option
The 4-foot, 1/8-inch Show Loop Leash can be used by itself or paired with a Show Slip Collar. It is not an integrated collar, so buying it alone does not give you a complete slip-lead system. Check the collar and leash as a matched set before taking the dog outside.
What will the complete setup cost?
Look at the total configuration, not only the lowest number in a product grid. The $10.99 Show Slip Collar and $11.49 Show Loop Leash total $22.48 before tax or shipping, so that combination is not a sub-$20 purchase even though each component is individually below $20. An integrated $14.49 Show Slip Leash may stay within the target budget because it already includes both pieces. The $7.49 Petite Slip Collar still requires a suitable leash, and the small slip lead’s $7.35 sale price may disappear or differ by seller. Confirm the live cart total and return terms.
Also check what the listing actually includes. “Leash” may mean leash only; “slip collar” may mean collar only; “slip lead” generally means the loop and lead together. Product photographs can show accessories that are not included, so read the configuration, length and width fields.
Who should use a slip lead?
The American Kennel Club describes a slip lead as appropriate only for a well-trained dog that is unlikely to duck out. The loop can tighten when the dog pulls, so a dog that lunges, panics, backs away or has not learned loose-leash skills may be a poor candidate. A frightened dog can also tighten the loop while trying to escape, increasing handling risk.
- Use one only when you can maintain close, calm supervision and the dog is unlikely to reverse out of it.
- Do not leave a dog unattended while wearing a slip lead. Resco’s product guidance gives the same warning.
- Do not tie the dog out, crate the dog or allow rough play while the loop is on.
- Stop using it if you see coughing, gagging, noisy breathing, repeated scratching at the neck, panic, freezing or attempts to back out.
If your dog pulls hard, the AKC notes that a harness may be a better and more comfortable choice. A harness does not automatically solve pulling, but it can let you teach loose-leash behavior without directing tension to the neck.

How the sliding loop should be handled
Before moving, identify which part of the loop slides and which part acts as the stop. Follow the exact manufacturer directions for orientation; a loop fitted backward may not release or limit opening as intended. Set the stop so the loop cannot simply fall over the head during ordinary movement, but do not tighten it against the throat. You should be able to observe normal breathing, swallowing and relaxed movement.
Keep the leash hand quiet and allow slack whenever the dog is walking calmly. If the dog forges ahead, stop, create space and reward a return to a loose line rather than pulling the loop tighter. Never wrap the lead around your hand, tie it to furniture or use it as a temporary tether. A slip lead is a handling connection, not a restraint system for unsupervised periods.
How to choose the right size and configuration
1. Measure the dog, not the product label
Use a soft tape measure around the neck where the collar will sit, then measure the largest part of the head if the loop must pass over it. Record both numbers. A loop that fits the neck but cannot pass over the head is unusable; one that passes easily over the head may allow an escape.
Use the manufacturer’s size chart for the exact model. The “up to 50 pounds” guidance for the small 3/8-inch lead is only one manufacturer’s recommendation and does not replace measuring the individual dog. Weight alone does not account for a narrow head, a broad neck, coat thickness or a dog that can back out.
2. Decide between an integrated lead and a separate collar
- Choose an integrated slip lead when you need one compact piece and the dog is already reliable on leash.
- Choose a separate collar when you want to use an existing leash, change leash lengths or keep a collar dedicated to a particular activity.
- Choose a leash-only loop only if you already have a correctly fitted compatible slip collar.
3. Inspect width, length and hardware
Match the lead’s width and length to the dog’s size and the environment. A very narrow lead may be unsuitable for a powerful dog; a long lead can create tangles in crowded spaces. Check stitching, rings and clips before every outing. If a ring is bent, stitching is loose or the material is frayed, retire the item.
For a separate collar, confirm that the leash clip fits through the attachment ring without binding. For an integrated design, inspect the point where the lead joins the loop. Run your fingers over the material for rough edges that could irritate a short-coated dog, and recheck after washing or prolonged dampness.
4. Check the stop or adjustment before walking
Many sliding loops use a stop or adjustment to limit how far the loop opens. Set it so the collar cannot fall over the dog’s head during normal movement, while still leaving room for comfortable breathing. Do not rely on a stop to restrain a dog that is actively trying to escape; change equipment and seek professional help instead.

How to introduce a slip collar without using corrections
The equipment should support a reward-based training plan. Introduce it at home before attempting a busy walk.
- Condition the sight of the collar. Show the loop, deliver a high-value treat and put it away. Repeat until the dog looks at it calmly.
- Practice handling. Touch the neck area briefly, feed a treat and release. Increase duration only while the dog remains relaxed.
- Fit it while stationary. Place the loop according to the manufacturer’s instructions, check that it cannot slip over the head during ordinary movement and observe breathing and body language.
- Reward a loose leash indoors. Take one or two steps with slack in the line, mark the calm behavior and feed the dog beside you. Increase distance gradually.
- Move to a quiet outdoor area. Keep sessions short. Reward check-ins, a soft leash and voluntary turns; do not create tension to force a position.
- Practice an emergency exit. Teach the dog to follow a treat away from a distraction and rehearse stopping calmly before visiting busier places.
- Change equipment if the dog struggles. Repeated pulling, coughing, panic or escape attempts are signals to stop, not invitations to apply more pressure.
For persistent pulling, fear, reactivity or aggression, work with a qualified reward-based trainer or a veterinary behavior professional. Equipment cannot diagnose the cause of a behavior problem.

Harness
The AKC identifies a harness as a potentially better, more comfortable option for a dog that tugs. Select a design that does not restrict shoulder movement, fits securely and allows normal breathing. A harness still requires loose-leash training; it simply changes where leash forces are distributed.
Martingale collar
A martingale can help dogs whose heads are close in size to their necks and who can back out of a flat collar. It should be fitted so it tightens only enough to prevent escape, never to choke. It is not a substitute for supervision or reward-based training.
Flat collar
A properly fitted flat collar is often sufficient for identification and ordinary walking when the dog does not pull or try to escape. Keep identification information current and make sure the collar allows normal breathing and swallowing.
The right choice depends on neck and head shape, pulling strength, medical history, behavior and the setting. If you are unsure, have a veterinarian or force-free trainer assess the fit in person.

- Choosing by breed or weight alone: Individual head and neck measurements determine whether a loop can be fitted and retained safely.
- Assuming every “show” item is interchangeable: Widths, rings, stops and loop sizes differ. Confirm that the leash and collar are compatible.
- Buying a leash-only product by mistake: The Show Loop Leash does not include a collar.
- Treating a sale price as permanent: The small slip lead appeared at $7.35 on one sale listing and $21.49 on another listing.
- Using tightening as a correction: A loop tightening is not a training signal to add force. Return to reward-based teaching or change equipment.
- Leaving the loop on: Unattended wear creates an avoidable risk of tightening, snagging or escape.
- Ignoring early warning signs: Coughing, gagging, panic, freezing or repeated backing out mean the setup is not appropriate for that dog or situation.
What AKC test rules do—and do not—tell you
AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen test equipment rules allow a well-fitting slip or buckle collar, martingale, or body harness. That rule describes what is permitted in that particular activity; it does not certify a product, prove that a slip collar improves training or establish that the equipment is suitable for every dog. Use the test requirement only as a narrow event rule, not as a general safety endorsement.

Buying and safety checklist
- Measure the neck and head and compare both with the exact product’s sizing information.
- Confirm whether the item is an integrated slip lead, a separate collar or a leash only.
- Calculate the complete cost, including a second component, tax and shipping.
- Verify the live price, seller, length and width; the listed figures are dated snapshots and one small-lead listing showed a sale price while another was higher.
- Inspect rings, clips, stops and stitching on arrival and before each use.
- Introduce the equipment with treats and short sessions; never use leash corrections.
- Keep the dog supervised whenever the slip loop is on, and remove it when the dog is unattended.
- Use a harness or another fitted option if the dog pulls forcefully, coughs, panics or can back out.
- Ask a reward-based professional for help with fear, reactivity, aggression or repeated escape attempts.
Bottom line
Under-$20 slip collars and slip leads can be inexpensive handling tools, with current examples ranging from a separate petite collar to integrated 4- or 6-foot leads. None has evidence here of superior training results. Select the configuration that fits your dog and situation, supervise every use and make reward-based teaching—not tightening the loop—the foundation of effective training.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a slip collar a good choice for a puppy that pulls?
Usually not as a first response. A slip lead can tighten when the puppy pulls and is intended for a well-trained dog unlikely to duck out. Consider a properly fitted harness or flat collar and teach loose-leash skills with rewards.
What is the difference between a slip collar and a slip lead?
A slip collar is the sliding loop only and needs a separate leash. A slip lead combines the loop collar and leash in one piece.
Can I leave a slip lead on my dog?
No. Resco advises never leaving a dog unattended while wearing one. Remove it for crating, tethering, rough play and any period when you cannot supervise closely.
How do I know whether the loop fits?
Measure the neck and the largest part of the head, then follow the exact model’s size guidance. The loop must not fall over the head during ordinary movement, and the dog must be able to breathe and swallow normally.
Is the $7.35 Mendota small slip lead always under $20?
No. That was a sale listing; another Mendota listing showed $21.49. Verify the current seller, configuration and total price before ordering.
Can I use the Show Loop Leash by itself?
It is a 4-foot leash that can be used alone or with a Show Slip Collar, but it is not a complete integrated slip lead. You need a correctly fitted compatible collar for a loop-collar setup.

Do slip collars train dogs faster?
There is no evidence in these listings that any under-$20 product improves training results. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods and advises against leash corrections, choke chains and other aversive punishment.
What should I use if my dog backs out of a flat collar?
The AKC notes that a properly fitted martingale may help dogs whose heads are close in size to their necks. Fit it to prevent escape without choking, supervise use and consider professional fitting help.
The Bottom Line
Buy by fit and configuration, not by the word “training” on the package. Under-$20 options can work as supervised handling tools for suitable dogs, while reward-based instruction remains the foundation of effective training.
