Small Dog Breeds to Consider If You Have Dog Allergies

Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Maltese, Toy Poodle and Affenpinscher are often considered by people with dog allergies—but no breed is guaranteed hypoallergenic. Learn how allergens work, how to evaluate an individual dog and how to reduce exposure at home.

If you have dog allergies, start with an individual dog—not a promise that a breed is “hypoallergenic.” The Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Maltese, Toy Poodle and Affenpinscher are small breeds commonly included on allergy-consideration lists, but no breed is guaranteed to be symptom-free. Your reaction can differ from another person’s, and even dogs of the same breed may produce and spread different amounts of allergen.

Before adopting, discuss your symptoms (especially asthma) with an allergist, arrange meaningful exposure to the specific dog, and prepare a household plan for grooming, cleaning and bedroom boundaries.

Why “hypoallergenic” does not mean allergy-safe

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) states that “there are no truly ‘hypoallergenic breeds’ of dogs or cats.” Its patient guidance explains that dog allergies are reactions to proteins found in dander (microscopic skin flakes), saliva and urine. Fur can carry and distribute those proteins, but fur itself is not the only—or necessarily the main—problem. See AAAAI’s pet-allergy guidance.

That is why hair length, a hairless appearance or a low-shedding coat cannot predict how you will feel around a particular dog. AAAAI specifically notes that allergic dander is not determined by hair length or the amount a dog sheds. A dog that leaves little visible hair can still spread allergen through skin flakes, saliva and contaminated surfaces.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) adds an important nuance: people can react to different dog allergens, and individual dogs do not all produce or shed the same amounts of every allergen. That variation does not create a dependable “safest breed,” however. ACAAI cautions that selecting a particular breed cannot guarantee lower allergen levels in your home or prevent symptoms. Read its explanation at ACAAI’s pet-allergy resource.

In practical terms, a breed label is a starting point for questions, not a medical clearance. The only meaningful test is how your body responds to the individual dog under conditions that resemble everyday life.

Small breeds commonly considered by allergy-conscious households

The American Kennel Club (AKC) includes the breeds below among dogs people often investigate when looking for lower-shedding or “hypoallergenic” options. The list is useful for finding candidates; it is not evidence that any one of them is allergen-free or reliably safer for you. AKC’s list is at Hypoallergenic Dogs, and its allergy-focused article is at Best Dog Breeds for People with Allergies.

Breed to investigate What to evaluate beyond the label Questions for a breeder, rescue or foster home
Bichon Frise Whether its grooming routine, activity needs and temperament fit your household, and whether you tolerate the individual dog. How often is the dog groomed? Where does it spend most of its time? Can you have repeated indoor visits?
Chinese Crested How your skin and respiratory symptoms respond to that dog; visible hair is not a measure of all allergen exposure. Can you meet the dog in its usual home and observe symptoms later the same day?
Maltese Coat maintenance, household activity and the dog’s saliva, bedding and preferred resting areas. What cleaning and grooming schedule does the current caregiver maintain?
Toy Poodle Training, exercise, grooming commitment and your reaction during sustained contact. Can a foster or trial arrangement be considered, subject to the organization’s rules?
Affenpinscher Handling, energy level, compatibility with children or other animals, and exposure management. What are the dog’s indoor habits, and how does it behave around grooming and bathing?

AKC also discusses the Miniature Schnauzer among small options in its broader allergy article. You can include it in the same investigation process, while applying the identical warning: the source does not establish a ranking of these breeds by allergy risk.

Choose among candidates on four separate questions: your response to the individual dog; the dog’s size and fit with your space and household; the grooming work you can perform safely and consistently; and your ability to control exposure at home. None of those questions can be replaced by the word “hypoallergenic.”

How to test your reaction before adoption

A brief greeting in an outdoor setting can miss the exposure that matters at home. Dander can settle on upholstery, bedding and clothing, while saliva can remain on toys and other surfaces. Use a staged process and involve a clinician when symptoms are significant.

1. Review your symptoms with an allergist

Tell the allergist what happens around dogs, how quickly symptoms begin, whether you have asthma, and which medicines you use. AAAAI notes that allergy evaluation and an individualized management plan can help clarify triggers and treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines or deliberately provoke a severe reaction without medical advice. Wheezing, chest tightness or trouble breathing warrants prompt medical attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Meet the specific dog repeatedly

Arrange several indoor visits with the dog you might adopt. Spend enough time handling, sitting near and walking with the dog to notice nasal, eye, skin or breathing symptoms. Ask the caregiver about where the dog sleeps and how often it is groomed, because those details affect the exposure you will experience at home.

3. Consider fostering when it is appropriate

In an expert answer dated October 6, 2024, AAAAI allergist Eric Macy, MD, MS, FAAAAI, wrote: “There are no hypoallergenic dogs.” The answer describes fostering as a reasonable starting point for determining whether symptoms are manageable. A foster period is more informative than a single visit, but it is still not a guarantee: symptoms can change with longer exposure, seasonal conditions, cleaning routines or a dog’s access to bedrooms. Read the answer at AAAAI’s October 6, 2024 expert response.

4. Set a stop rule before you commit

Agree with your clinician and household on which symptoms mean the trial should pause. A plan prevents wishful thinking from turning a manageable test into months of uncontrolled symptoms. If the dog aggravates asthma or causes persistent symptoms despite the agreed plan, adoption may not be a safe fit.

Reduce exposure after a dog comes home

Exposure-control measures can lower what accumulates in the home; they cannot make a dog or house allergy-proof. The AKC recommends combining several habits rather than relying on one product or one grooming appointment. Its practical guidance appears in Best Dog Breeds for People with Allergies.

Keep the sleeping area a protected zone

  • Keep the dog off the human bed, and consider making the bedroom off-limits.
  • Wash the dog’s bed and removable covers regularly according to their care instructions.
  • Close bedroom doors consistently; an occasional exception undermines the boundary.

Control fabrics and dust reservoirs

  • Reduce carpets, heavy drapes and other soft furnishings that can trap allergen.
  • Vacuum and dust on a schedule, using equipment suited to your home and following the manufacturer’s filtration and maintenance instructions.
  • Wash blankets, throws and cushion covers that the dog uses.

Make grooming a managed task

  • Schedule regular grooming and bathing appropriate to the dog’s coat and skin; ask a professional how often is suitable.
  • If grooming triggers you, have a non-allergic household member or professional do it, preferably outside your main living area.
  • Wash hands after handling the dog, saliva-covered toys or bedding, and avoid touching your eyes until you do.

Use filtration as an optional layer

A pet air purifier or HEPA air purifier may help remove airborne particles, as AKC suggests, but it does not remove allergen from every surface or prevent symptoms. Select a unit appropriate to the room size, place it where air circulates, and maintain filters on schedule. No specific model has been shown here to make a particular breed safe.

How to choose the right dog when allergies are only one constraint

Allergy management fails if the dog’s ordinary needs are ignored. Before deciding, score each candidate on the following dimensions:

Daily activity and training

Ask how much exercise, play, mental stimulation and training the individual dog needs. A small body does not automatically mean low activity or easy care. Match the dog’s routine to the time and energy your household can provide.

Temperament and handling

Observe how the dog responds to handling, visitors, children and other animals relevant to your home. A calm interaction during one visit is informative but not a guarantee of behavior in a new environment; ask caregivers for a history across settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grooming responsibility

Clarify brushing, bathing, trimming and professional-grooming needs, plus who will perform them. More coat maintenance can mean more opportunity to manage loose material, but it also creates more close contact and more cleaning work. Choose a routine your household can sustain without exposing the allergic person unnecessarily.

Household logistics

Decide where the dog will rest, eat, play and be groomed; which rooms are restricted; who cleans; and how travel or visitors will be handled. Write the plan down so every household member follows the same boundaries.

Common assumptions that lead people astray

“Hairless means no allergy.”

Not necessarily. AAAAI identifies dander, saliva and urine proteins as triggers and says dander is not determined by hair length or shedding amount. A hairless-looking dog can still produce allergen and spread it through skin flakes or saliva.

“Low-shedding means I will tolerate it.”

Low visible shedding may change how much hair you notice, but it cannot predict your immune response. ACAAI’s warning applies directly: choosing a breed does not guarantee reduced allergen in the home or freedom from symptoms.

“A test visit proves long-term tolerance.”

It does not. A short visit may involve less accumulated household allergen than daily life, and symptoms can change with repeated exposure. Repeated visits or a properly supervised foster arrangement provide better information.

“Cleaning alone solves the problem.”

Cleaning, laundering, grooming and filtration are exposure-management tools. They can reduce reservoirs and airborne particles, but none is a cure or a promise that symptoms will stop.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you discussed your dog symptoms and asthma history with an allergist?
  • Have you met the exact dog indoors more than once?
  • Is there a realistic foster or trial option?
  • Does every household member understand bedroom and furniture boundaries?
  • Who will handle grooming, bedding and vacuuming?
  • Can your home reduce carpets, drapes or other allergen-trapping fabrics where practical?
  • Do you have a plan for an air purifier or other filtration, including filter replacement?
  • Does the dog’s activity, training, temperament and grooming workload fit your life even if allergies were not a factor?
  • What symptoms will make you stop the trial and contact your clinician?

The most defensible shortlist is therefore a group of individual dogs from breeds such as Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Maltese, Toy Poodle, Affenpinscher or Miniature Schnauzer—not a ranking of “safe” breeds. Investigate the dog, test exposure responsibly and plan the home before you sign adoption papers.
