The ant cockroach (Attaphila fungicola) is the strongest documented answer to “what is the world’s smallest cockroach?” Guinness World Records reports it at less than 3 millimetres long. The other four examples below are notably small species documented in regional surveys or a Chinese taxonomic study, but the available evidence does not establish a definitive worldwide second-through-fifth ranking.
That distinction matters because cockroach measurements are not always made the same way. Some sources give an average adult length, while taxonomic descriptions may measure the body without the cerci (tail appendages). Treat the list as a carefully sourced selection of tiny cockroaches, not a universal league table.

What is the world’s smallest cockroach?
Attaphila fungicola, commonly called the ant cockroach, is identified by Guinness World Records as the world’s smallest cockroach, with a reported length of less than 3 mm. The record entry is dated 10 January 2013, so the claim should be attributed to Guinness’s record rather than treated as an independently verified, permanently current scientific ranking.

Its tiny size is therefore associated with a specialized social environment rather than with the large household pest species most people recognize. Finding a very small roach indoors does not, by itself, identify it as an ant cockroach.

Why there is no verified global top-five list
Cockroach taxonomy includes thousands of species, and published measurements use different conventions. A source may report an average adult size, a range from a limited number of specimens, or a body measurement that excludes the cerci and sometimes differs from overall length including the tegmina (forewings). Those values cannot be sorted into a precise ranking without a broad dataset measured under one protocol.
The five species in this article combine the Guinness world-record claim, a California regional claim, and three small species described in a 2017 study of Chinese Sorineuchora. The study examined eight Chinese species and supplied identification information; it did not claim to rank every cockroach worldwide. “Smallest” therefore has to be read in context: world record, smallest reported in a region, or a short specimen range in a taxonomic paper.
Five notably small cockroach species
| Species | Reported size and measurement basis | Geography or habitat | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attaphila fungicola (ant cockroach) | Less than 3 mm; record length | Leafcutter-ant nests in continental North America north of Mexico | Guinness World Records’ smallest-cockroach record, dated 10 January 2013 |
| Luridiblatta trivittata (three-lined cockroach) | 5–7 mm; average adult length | Native to North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean; established in parts of California | University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources calls it California’s smallest cockroach |
| Sorineuchora shanensis (Shan’s Sorineuchora) | 4.9–5.4 mm and 5.8–6.5 mm; body length without cerci | China | Ranges reported in a 2017 taxonomic treatment; the retrieved measurement passage does not make the sex grouping of both ranges clear |
| Sorineuchora bimaculata | Male 6.4–7.6 mm; female 6.5 mm; body length without cerci | China | New species described in the 2017 study, with specimen measurements rather than a global size claim |
| Sorineuchora bivitta | Males 6.5–7.9 mm; females 6.5–7.8 mm; body length without cerci | China | Specimen ranges in the same taxonomic study, not a worldwide rank |
1. Ant cockroach (Attaphila fungicola)
At under 3 mm, the ant cockroach is smaller than a grain of rice and is the clearest answer when a reader asks for the smallest cockroach species. Guinness describes it as living inside leafcutter-ant colonies. That setting provides shelter and access to nest resources, but it also means the species is not a typical free-living roach encountered around kitchens, bathrooms, or pet food.
The “less than 3 mm” figure is a record value, not an average for every individual. Guinness records can change as new measurements or claims are accepted, which is why the date and attribution matter. The record page is the appropriate source for the record claim: Guinness World Records, “Smallest cockroach.”

2. Three-lined cockroach (Luridiblatta trivittata)
Adults of the three-lined cockroach average 5–7 mm, according to a 2022 article from the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR). UC ANR calls it California’s smallest cockroach. The species is native to North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, was first detected in California around 2004, and was positively identified there in 2009. The 2022 account described an expanding range in northern and central California at that time; it is not a 2026 range survey.
Its name refers to three distinct stripes running lengthwise along the adult body. The species generally lives outdoors and only occasionally wanders inside. Those traits make it important for identification: a tiny striped roach near a window or patio is not automatically evidence of an indoor infestation. The regional size and history are detailed by UC ANR’s 2022 account of the three-lined cockroach.
3. Shan’s Sorineuchora (Sorineuchora shanensis)
A 2017 taxonomic paper reports two small body-length ranges for Sorineuchora shanensis: 4.9–5.4 mm and 5.8–6.5 mm. The measurement is explicitly body length without cerci. Because the retrieved measurement passage does not make the sex grouping of both ranges unambiguous, it is safer to present both ranges without assigning one to males or females.
These figures come from specimens examined for taxonomy, not from a survey designed to find the world’s smallest cockroach. They also should not be compared as if they were identical to an overall length that includes the tegmina. The species description appears in Li, Che, Zheng, and Wang’s study of Chinese Sorineuchora: The cockroach genus Sorineuchora Caudell, 1927 from China.

4. Sorineuchora bimaculata
The same 2017 study gives a body length without cerci of 6.4–7.6 mm for male Sorineuchora bimaculata specimens and 6.5 mm for a female measurement. The species was described as new in that paper. A single female value is not an average or a full species range, so it should not be interpreted as the typical size of every adult.
Taxonomic measurements are useful for distinguishing closely related species, but they are not automatically comparable with a popular field guide’s “adult length.” For this species, the exact label—male or female specimen and body without cerci—is part of the number’s meaning.
5. Sorineuchora bivitta
Sorineuchora bivitta is another small Chinese species in the 2017 treatment. Reported body length without cerci is 6.5–7.9 mm for males and 6.5–7.8 mm for females. The overlapping ranges show why a simple species-by-species ranking can be misleading: sex, specimen size, and measurement convention can produce overlapping values even within one species.

How small is a tiny cockroach compared with household species?
For scale, Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension lists German cockroach adults at 10–15 mm (0.4–0.6 inch) and American cockroaches at 2.5–3.8 cm (1–1.5 inches) in its Virginia living-space guide. Those are regional household reference figures, not measurements intended to rank all cockroach species globally. They show why a 5–7 mm outdoor species can look dramatically smaller than a mature German cockroach while still being several times longer than an ant cockroach under 3 mm.
Size also changes during development. A young nymph of a larger species can be smaller than an adult of a naturally tiny species, so an image or one sighting cannot establish species identity. Color pattern, body shape, habitat, and (when possible) an adult specimen are more informative than length alone.
Could a tiny indoor cockroach be a three-lined cockroach?
Possibly, but size alone cannot answer that question. UC ANR notes that three-lined cockroaches have three distinct stripes, whereas German cockroaches have two. Three-lined cockroaches are primarily outdoor insects that occasionally enter buildings; German cockroaches live exclusively indoors and are major public-health pests.

Misidentification can lead to unnecessary insecticide use. Check the stripe pattern, where the insect was found, and whether repeated sightings occur in kitchens, bathrooms, or other warm indoor areas. A single small roach near an exterior door is a different situation from multiple roaches, droppings, shed skins, or egg cases indoors.

If the markings are unclear, UC ANR recommends contacting the county UC Cooperative Extension office, Department of Agriculture, or a Vector Control District for identification. Do not diagnose an infestation from size alone. The identification guidance and California context are in UC ANR’s three-lined cockroach article.
How scientists make size comparisons more reliable
A useful comparison records four details alongside every number:
- Life stage: adult, nymph, or an unspecified specimen.
- Sex: male and female adults may differ in size.
- Measurement endpoints: body without cerci, total body, or overall length including tegmina.
- Statistic: a record minimum, an average, a single specimen, or a range.
The Sorineuchora paper uses “body length without cerci,” while UC ANR gives an average adult length for the three-lined cockroach. Those labels prevent false precision. Even modern imaging studies emphasize that cockroach digitization and measurement require defined methods; a 2025 photogrammetry paper discusses rapid three-dimensional recording techniques at PMC, but it does not create a verified global ranking of the smallest species.

- Supported: Guinness World Records reports Attaphila fungicola at less than 3 mm and calls it the smallest cockroach.
- Supported: UC ANR reports 5–7 mm as the average adult length of Luridiblatta trivittata and calls it California’s smallest cockroach.
- Supported: The 2017 Chinese taxonomic study reports the stated specimen measurements for three Sorineuchora species.
- Not established: An exact, current worldwide ranking from first through fifth place using one consistent measurement method.
- Not established: That every tiny cockroach found indoors belongs to one of these five species.
The practical conclusion is straightforward: the ant cockroach is the best-supported world-record answer, while the other four are well-documented small examples whose measurements and claims must remain qualified by source, geography, and method.
