Snake Removal Tools: What to Use, What to Avoid, and When to Call a Professional

A safety-first guide to snake removal tools: when to leave a snake alone, how a broom can redirect one at a distance, why hooks and tongs are specialist equipment, and how to choose qualified local help.

Most snake encounters do not require capture. If the snake can leave safely, give it a clear path and keep people and pets back. Do not handle an unidentified or potentially venomous snake. A broom may help redirect an outdoor snake from a distance; hooks, tongs and containment equipment belong to trained handlers, and local animal control or wildlife professionals are the safer choice when species, location or risk is uncertain.

This guide explains what each tool is actually for, the animal-welfare trade-offs, and how to choose a response that fits your jurisdiction and the situation.

Start with the response, not the equipment

Seeing a snake does not automatically mean it must be caught or moved. Michigan Department of Natural Resources advises leaving a snake alone when possible and allowing it to exit a building through an open door. Its guidance states: “Never attempt to handle a snake unless you are certain of the species.” Read the agency’s current advice at Michigan DNR’s snake guidance.

Use this order of decisions:

  1. Create distance. Move children and pets away, close interior doors if the snake is in one room, and keep everyone out of striking range.
  2. Provide an exit when practical. Open an exterior door and remove obstacles from the route without approaching the snake.
  3. Decide whether redirection is necessary. An outdoor snake that is already moving away often needs no intervention. A long-handled broom can encourage movement away while you remain back; it is a redirection tool, not a capture device.
  4. Escalate uncertainty. If the snake is unidentified, may be venomous, is inside a home, is trapped in a difficult location, or cannot be managed without close contact, contact local animal control or a qualified wildlife-control service.

Rules for possession, relocation and release differ by state, locality and species. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife warns that improper relocation can harm the animal and directs residents toward local animal control or private wildlife-control professionals in some situations. Check the relevant wildlife authority before moving a snake any distance; its Snake Help guidance explains why local advice matters.

Never judge venom risk by appearance alone

Head shape, pupil shape and a quick internet comparison are not reliable reasons to approach a snake. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission specifically says, “Do not use head shape or pupil shape to attempt to identify whether a snake is venomous.” Its agency document, Snakes, also lists hooks, tongs and ventilated buckets in the context of venomous-snake handling.

For a homeowner, uncertainty is itself a reason to increase distance. Do not attempt a close photograph, corner the animal for identification, or use a tool to test whether it will strike. A qualified responder can identify the species and determine whether removal is legally permitted and biologically appropriate.

Match the response to the task

Option What it is for Important limits
Open exit and passive waiting Allowing a snake to leave a building or yard without contact Requires a safe route and separation from people and pets; do not block or chase the snake.
Long-handled broom Low-contact redirection of an outdoor snake that needs encouragement to move away Does not identify, restrain or make a venomous snake safe. Use only when you can keep substantial distance.
Long-handled snake hook Distance handling or capture by a trained person Reach and control depend on handler skill, animal size and surroundings. Ownership alone does not make handling safe.
Snake tongs Specialized capture or handling in limited professional situations Agency guidance warns of possible internal injury and says use should be limited when no alternative exists.
Ventilated bucket or other secure container Temporary containment or transfer after a qualified handler has control Must close securely and provide appropriate ventilation; exact design depends on species, jurisdiction and handler protocol.
Snake tube or snake bag Specialist containment and transfer Intended for trained handlers, not casual experimentation.
Wildlife-control professional Identification, removal and advice when risk or legality is uncertain Availability, licensing and services vary locally; verify credentials and follow agency directions.

Low-contact redirection: the safest homeowner option when it is truly needed

Michigan DNR describes using a long tool such as a broom to encourage an outdoor snake to move away. This approach is fundamentally different from hooking, pinning or grabbing. The objective is to make the desired direction easier, not to touch the snake.

How to redirect an outdoor snake

  1. Bring people and pets indoors or behind a closed barrier. Keep a second adult away from the work area so no one approaches from the opposite side.
  2. Identify a clear destination, such as an open yard edge or natural cover, and remove obstacles only if you can do so without nearing the snake.
  3. Stand to the side and behind the animal’s direction of travel, never directly in front of it or within a distance at which a sudden movement could reach you.
  4. Use the broom’s bristle end or shaft to create gentle movement in the ground beside the snake. Do not strike, pin, lift or drag it.
  5. Pause whenever the snake turns toward you, disappears under an object, or enters a tight space. Back away and call a professional if the route is no longer open.
  6. Once the snake reaches cover or leaves the area, stop. Do not pursue it to confirm where it went.

A broom is not appropriate for an unidentified snake in a confined room, a snake that may be venomous, or any situation requiring you to lean over the animal. In those cases, close the room, place a towel along the bottom of the door if that can be done without approaching the snake, and obtain local help.

Snake hooks: reach for qualified handlers, not a do-it-yourself guarantee

A snake hook is a long shaft with a curved end that lets a trained handler move or control a snake while keeping hands farther away. North Carolina and California wildlife materials name hooks among equipment used in qualified handling. A California Public Utilities Commission project guideline specifies a 3-to-4-foot hook for its own wildlife-handling work. That measurement is a project-specific professional specification, not a universal consumer standard or proof that a particular length is safe in every setting. See the guideline at WODUP Wildlife Handling Guidelines.

What determines whether a hook is appropriate

  • Training: Safe use requires understanding body support, escape behavior, species-specific risks and how to avoid injuring the spine, ribs or internal organs.
  • Animal size and condition: A tool that seems long enough for a small snake may provide inadequate control of a larger, fast-moving or gravid animal.
  • Setting: Furniture, vegetation, steps, holes and walls can leave the handler with no safe retreat.
  • Containment plan: A handler must know where the snake will go before attempting to move it. Improvising a container after contact begins increases risk.
  • Legal authority: Some species or locations require permits, pre-authorization or agency involvement.

The California project guideline says venomous snakes should be moved only by pre-authorized biologists. That is a strict project rule, but it illustrates the central point: a hook is one component of a trained response, not a license for an untrained person to approach an unknown snake.

Snake tongs have a serious animal-welfare trade-off

Tongs use jaws at the end of a long handle to grasp a snake. They may appear easier than a hook, but agency guidance does not treat them as a universally safer substitute. The California project guideline states that tong use “shall be limited to situations in which there is no other alternative” and warns that tongs may cause internal injury, particularly to gravid (pregnant) snakes. The quoted language appears in the California handling guideline.

Grasping force, placement and release can damage tissue even when the skin looks unbroken. A tong can also cause the animal to twist violently, increasing injury risk to both snake and handler. Do not buy tongs on the assumption that they remove the need for identification, training or professional containment. For most household encounters, creating an exit and calling an experienced responder is preferable to attempting a tong capture.

Containment equipment: buckets, tubes and bags

Ventilated buckets, snake tubes and snake bags appear in wildlife-rehabilitation and agency handling materials as ways to contain or transfer a snake after a qualified person has control. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Manual lists capture equipment and protective equipment for trained handlers. North Carolina’s agency guidance also includes ventilated buckets among equipment relevant to venomous-snake handling.

Ventilated containers

A bucket or rigid container must have a secure closure that the snake cannot push off and ventilation that is appropriate for the species and duration of containment. Do not use an open box, a loosely covered trash can or a container with gaps large enough for the snake to escape. Never place your hands inside to “check” the animal. The correct container size, lid design, labeling and maximum holding time are matters for the handler and local rules.

Snake tubes

A snake tube is a rigid, smooth-sided tube used by specialists to guide or secure a snake during examination or transfer. Tube diameter and technique must match the animal; a tube that is too large may not control the snake, while one that is too small can cause injury. This is specialist equipment, not a substitute for training.

Snake bags

Snake bags are flexible containment sacks used in some professional and rehabilitation settings. They require a reliable closure, clear labeling and a safe method of placing the bag inside a rigid secondary container when transport rules require it. A loose cloth sack, pillowcase or improvised bag can fail at the opening and does not establish that transport is legal or humane.

When to call animal control or wildlife professionals

Call local animal control, a licensed wildlife-control operator or the relevant wildlife agency when any of the following applies:

  • You cannot identify the snake with reliable expert help.
  • The snake may be venomous, or your area contains species of medical concern.
  • The snake is inside a home, garage, attic, crawl space or other confined area.
  • Children, pets or people with limited mobility cannot be kept away.
  • The animal is injured, entangled, trapped in a window well or located where redirection would require close contact.
  • You would need to use tongs, a hook or a container but have no training and no clear escape route.
  • You are unsure whether capture, relocation or release is legal.

Tell the responder the exact location, whether anyone has been bitten, whether the snake is contained behind a closed door, and whether you can observe it from a safe distance. Do not attempt to catch it for the responder. Follow the agency’s instructions about photographs; never approach solely to obtain one.

Prevent repeat encounters without harming snakes

Prevention is usually more effective than building a capture kit. Agency guidance recommends reducing shelter and prey attractants while allowing snakes to move away when safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep grass, brush and stored materials managed so there are fewer concealed travel routes near doors and play areas.
  • Store firewood, lumber and debris off the ground and away from walls when practical.
  • Seal gaps around doors, foundations, utility penetrations and vents with materials suitable for the opening; preserve required ventilation and do not block drainage.
  • Reduce rodent and other prey attractants by securing pet food, birdseed, garbage and compost.
  • Keep garage and shed doors closed when not in use, and inspect the threshold for gaps.
  • Use lighting and a clear path around frequently used entrances so people can see where they are stepping.

Do not rely on a chemical, household product or unverified “snake repellent” as a guaranteed solution. If a recurring problem involves a den, structural access point or protected species, ask the local wildlife authority for a species-appropriate plan.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Stop and observe from a safe distance. Do not touch, corner or provoke the snake.
  2. Protect people and pets. Close doors or use barriers to separate them from the area.
  3. Offer an exit. If the snake is outdoors or near an exterior door and can leave without contact, wait and allow it to do so.
  4. Use only low-contact redirection when conditions are clearly safe. A broom may guide an outdoor snake away; it is not for capture.
  5. Do not improvise capture. A hook, tongs or container should be used only by someone trained and authorized for that animal and location.
  6. Call local professionals when uncertain. Ask about identification, legal relocation and release before anyone moves the snake.
  7. Afterward, address attractants and access points. Prevention reduces the chance of another close encounter.

Equipment should support a safe decision, not drive one. For an ordinary homeowner, the most useful “tool” is often distance, a closed door and a phone number for the appropriate local agency. Specialized hooks, tongs and containment systems have legitimate roles in trained wildlife work, but none makes an unidentified or potentially venomous snake safe to handle.

The Bottom Line

Give a snake space and an exit whenever possible; use a broom only for low-contact redirection, reserve hooks and containment equipment for trained handlers, and call local professionals when species, safety or legality is uncertain.
