Neither sniff walks nor brisk walks are best for every dog. A sniff walk lets a dog explore scents at a comfortable pace; a brisk walk offers more sustained physical activity, including cardiovascular exercise. Most dogs benefit from choosing a walk that fits their needs—and from making room for both kinds of activity when appropriate.
What each kind of walk offers
Sniff walks: exploration and enrichment
On a sniff-focused walk, the goal is to give your dog safe opportunities to investigate the environment instead of keeping a steady pace. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends allowing a dog on an on-leash enrichment walk to explore and sniff at its own pace. A quiet, scent-rich setting may also make a less-managed decompression walk possible.
Sniffing is meaningful enrichment, but it does not automatically meet every dog’s physical-exercise needs. The American Kennel Club (AKC) notes that sniff walks provide mental enrichment and some physical activity; some dogs need more, depending on age, breed, health, and energy level.
Brisk walks: sustained physical activity
A brisk walk keeps a more continuous pace and can provide cardiovascular exercise. VCA says long brisk walks or jogs can be beneficial for this purpose. Build intensity and duration gradually rather than suddenly asking an unconditioned dog to exercise rigorously.

Which should you choose?
| Your goal | Emphasize | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Let your dog investigate its surroundings | Sniff-focused walk | Allow safe pauses and exploration at your dog’s pace; choose a suitable, low-stress place. |
| Provide more sustained cardiovascular activity | Brisk walk | Increase activity gradually; consult your veterinarian before starting rigorous exercise. |
| Meet your dog’s overall activity and enrichment needs | An individualized mix | Consider age, breed, health, fitness, and energy. A sniff walk alone may not be enough for some dogs. |
| Exercise a growing puppy or a dog with health concerns | A veterinarian-guided plan | Ask your veterinarian which activities and amounts are appropriate for your dog. |
There is no established universal winner. The available evidence does not include a direct controlled comparison showing that sniff walks or brisk walks are better overall. A 2024 scoping review of canine scent activities describes a growing body of research, but says more work is needed to determine which dog-centered activities enhance wellbeing. It also summarizes an international survey with 566 trainer responses; those reports are not a clinical trial proving a particular outcome. A 2020 study examined a prescribed activity plan for healthy dog-owner pairs who were below recommended activity levels, not a comparison of sniffing and brisk pacing.
How to make a sniff walk safe and useful
- Choose a suitable area. Keep the environment and leash setup appropriate for your dog and the location, and allow exploration only where it is safe.
- Consider a longer leash where appropriate. PetMD suggests a 10–30-foot leash for sniff walks in less-populated areas. This is an optional way to offer more room, not a veterinary requirement; keep control suited to the setting.
- Try indoor scent enrichment when an outdoor walk is not feasible. A snuffle mat can offer an indoor sniffing activity, but it does not replace an individualized physical-exercise plan.
- Let your dog’s condition guide the outing. Do not impose one fixed duration or pace on every dog; needs vary.
Exercise safely, especially with puppies
VCA advises against routinely jogging or running on hard surfaces with puppies that are not fully grown. Its general maturity guidance is under 12 months for tiny breeds and 18–24 months for larger breeds. Growth and health vary, so ask your veterinarian for advice specific to your dog before introducing higher-level exercise.

If your dog has health issues or uncertain fitness, ask your veterinarian before starting a rigorous routine.

The PDSA 2022 PAW Report found that 75% of dog owners surveyed said their dog had unrestricted opportunities to sniff and explore on walks, while 64% said their dog had off-lead or long-lead exercise. These are survey reports about opportunities, not health outcomes or evidence that one walking style is superior.

A 2010 observational study reported 286 observations in its first study and a separate leash/off-leash observation involving 10 dogs. Sniffing duration was associated with breed type and whether a dog was observed urinating. Those findings do not establish that sniff walks outperform brisk walks.
