The breed began in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, when Dorothy Hinds Daugherty developed white-footed Siamese kittens through breeding with domestic cats of American Shorthair ancestry. The International Cat Association (TICA) accepted the Snowshoe for championship competition in 1994.
This guide explains the documented history, registry descriptions, approximate size and lifespan, personality range, grooming and routine care. Color and white feet can suggest Snowshoe type, but appearance alone cannot prove that a cat has a documented Snowshoe pedigree.

11 Snowshoe cat facts you can rely on
Fact 1: The breed originated in Philadelphia in the 1960s
TICA traces the Snowshoe to Philadelphia, where breeder Dorothy Hinds Daugherty found three Siamese kittens with white feet in the early 1960s. She worked to preserve that unusual combination of pointed coloration and white markings by breeding with a domestic cat that had tuxedo markings and American Shorthair ancestry. TICA’s historical account is available in its Snowshoe Breed Introduction.

Fact 2: TICA recognized the Snowshoe as a championship breed in 1994
TICA reports that it accepted the Snowshoe as a championship breed in 1994. Recognition means a registry has an approved standard and rules for exhibiting and breeding; it does not mean that every cat with similar coloring is a pedigreed Snowshoe.
Registry standards can also use slightly different language. TICA’s history and profile provide the most detailed account of this breed’s development, while the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe) describes the Snowshoe independently as a medium-sized cat combining the heft of shorthaired ancestors with the length of oriental ancestors. FIFe’s description is at FIFe’s Snowshoe page.
Fact 3: A Snowshoe has a short coat, pointed coloring and a balanced athletic build
TICA describes a medium-sized, muscular but agile, shorthaired cat. Its formal standard calls for short hair, a modified wedge-shaped head, a semi-foreign body type and particolor points. “Pointed” means the cooler parts of the body—such as the face, ears, legs and tail—carry deeper color than the warmer central body. The standard is published in TICA’s All Breed Standards.

FIFe’s wording emphasizes the same overall balance from another angle: the cat should have substance from its shorthaired ancestry without losing the longer lines associated with oriental-type cats. Neither description calls for an extreme or fragile build. A healthy individual should look coordinated, active and proportionate rather than exaggerated.
Fact 4: White feet and blue eyes are signature features, not pedigree proof
TICA’s breed profile identifies pointed coloring, white feet and blue eyes as characteristic Snowshoe features. White markings may extend beyond the feet according to an individual’s pattern, and the amount of white can vary. The ideal shown in a registry standard is a breeding and exhibition goal, not a guarantee that every pet will match it perfectly.

A cat found at a shelter or adopted without papers may look like a Snowshoe because several genes and mixed ancestry can produce pointed coats and white paws. Unless a recognized pedigree or breeder record documents ancestry, describe the cat as “Snowshoe-type” or “resembling a Snowshoe” rather than claiming confirmed breed status.
Fact 5: TICA estimates females at 7–10 pounds and males at 9–12 pounds
TICA gives approximate adult weights of 7–10 pounds for females and 9–12 pounds for males. These are breed-profile ranges, not targets for every cat: frame size, sex, age, muscle, neuter status and body condition all affect a healthy weight. Your veterinarian should assess body condition rather than relying on a scale range alone.
TICA also estimates a life expectancy of 15–20+ years. That is an approximate breed-profile estimate, not a promise or a dated population statistic. Environment, nutrition, preventive care, genetics and access to veterinary treatment can all influence how long an individual lives.
What is a Snowshoe cat’s personality like?
Fact 6: Temperament varies substantially between individuals
TICA explicitly cautions that Snowshoe personalities differ. Its profile describes common tendencies, not a behavioral guarantee: one cat may be outgoing and constantly involved in household activity, while another may be reserved with strangers. Early socialization, prior experiences, age and the individual’s inherited temperament all matter.
TICA captures that variation in the sentence, “The Snowshoe personality is as unique as their appearance and is never boring.” The quote appears on TICA’s Snowshoe profile; no individual speaker or publication date is identified on the returned page.

Fact 7: Many are intelligent, affectionate, interactive and softly vocal
TICA commonly characterizes Snowshoes as intelligent, loyal, affectionate and closely bonded with people. They may follow household routines, seek interactive play and remain interested in what their owners are doing. The breed is often described as vocal, but the voice is usually portrayed as soft or melodic rather than automatically loud.
These traits have practical consequences. A Snowshoe may do best with daily attention, play and opportunities to investigate its surroundings. Puzzle feeders, short training sessions and rotating toys can provide mental work, but the right amount depends on the cat’s age, health and preferences.
Fact 8: Some Snowshoes are shy, bossy or uncomfortable sharing attention
TICA notes that some individuals are shy, while others can be bossy or prefer to be the center of attention. That range makes a meeting with the actual cat more informative than a breed label. Ask a breeder, rescue organization or foster caregiver how the cat responds to handling, visitors, children, other animals and periods alone.
In a multi-pet home, introduce animals gradually, provide separate food and litter areas, and give each cat a retreat. A sociable Snowshoe may enjoy companionship, but no breed description can guarantee that two particular cats will bond.

Fact 9: Weekly brushing is usually enough for the short coat
TICA says weekly brushing keeps the Snowshoe’s short coat easy to maintain. A soft cat brush or grooming comb can remove loose hair and let you check the skin for mats, parasites, irritation or unusual lumps. Keep sessions brief and reward calm handling; forcing a frightened cat can make future grooming harder.

Shedding, skin oil and tolerance vary. During heavier seasonal shedding, some cats may benefit from more frequent sessions, but there is no need to shave a healthy shorthaired coat. Ask a veterinary professional about persistent dandruff, hair loss, redness or excessive scratching.
Fact 10: Routine veterinary, nail and dental care still matters
TICA recommends regular veterinary checkups, nail trimming and dental care. Its profile specifically advises brushing teeth with veterinarian-approved pet toothpaste. Human toothpaste is not an appropriate substitute because ingredients and swallowing risks differ.
- Veterinary visits: follow a schedule based on age, health, vaccination needs and risk factors in your region.
- Nails: trim only the sharp tip when needed, avoiding the quick. A veterinary nurse can demonstrate safe technique.
- Teeth: introduce a cat toothbrush and approved toothpaste gradually, beginning with brief contact and building tolerance.
- At-home checks: note changes in appetite, drinking, litter-box use, weight, breathing, mobility or behavior and report concerning changes promptly.
These are general feline-care practices, not evidence that Snowshoes have a breed-exclusive dental or medical requirement. A veterinary-publisher overview is available from PetMD’s Snowshoe health and care profile, but no reliable disease prevalence or Snowshoe-specific screening protocol is established by the material summarized here. Your veterinarian should tailor preventive care to the individual cat.
Fact 11: You cannot confirm “my cat is a Snowshoe” from appearance alone
The question “Is my cat a Snowshoe?” has two different answers. If you mean “Does my cat resemble the breed?”, pointed coloring, blue eyes and white feet may support that description. If you mean “Does my cat have documented Snowshoe ancestry?”, visual inspection is insufficient.

Pedigree papers from a recognized registry or verifiable breeder records are the evidence for registered status. Without them, use careful wording such as “Snowshoe mix,” “Snowshoe-type” or “a cat with Snowshoe-like markings.” A DNA test may provide ancestry clues, but it does not replace registry documentation or establish that a cat meets an exhibition standard.

How TICA and FIFe describe the Snowshoe
The two registry descriptions overlap on the features most owners notice, while emphasizing different aspects of type. They are descriptive standards, not rankings of one cat as better than another.
| Comparison point | TICA | FIFe |
|---|---|---|
| Historical context | Traces development to Dorothy Hinds Daugherty’s Philadelphia breeding program in the early 1960s and reports championship acceptance in 1994. | Provides an independent breed description rather than the same historical account. |
| Body and ancestry type | Describes a muscular, agile, medium-sized cat; its standard specifies a semi-foreign build and modified wedge. | Describes medium size, combining the heftiness of shorthaired ancestors with the length of oriental ancestors. |
| Coat and markings | Short hair, pointed coloring, white feet and blue eyes; the formal standard includes particolor points. | The name refers to the characteristic white feet. |
| Personality | Intelligent, affectionate, interactive and often softly vocal, with significant individual variation. | Offers a compatible general description but does not make every individual behave alike. |
Is a Snowshoe a good fit for your household?
Consider the individual cat’s behavior and your schedule rather than choosing solely from a visual description. A Snowshoe may suit a home that can provide regular interaction, gentle training, play and routine grooming. A cat that is shy may need quiet spaces and a slower introduction to visitors; a highly social cat may seek more contact than a household expects.
Before adoption or purchase, ask these practical questions:
- How does the cat react to handling, grooming and nail trims?
- Does it seek human attention, and how does it cope when left alone?
- Has it lived with children, dogs or other cats?
- Are vaccination, veterinary and dental records available?
- If pedigree matters, are registry papers and a traceable lineage provided?
The answers will tell you more about day-to-day compatibility than the label alone. Once the cat comes home, establish veterinary care, a dental routine, weekly coat checks and a predictable introduction to the household.
