Solutions for Classroom Challenges: Helping Dogs Feel Comfortable in Social Situations

Dog socialization is about manageable, supported exposure—not greeting every person or dog. Learn how to use observation, distance, and the dog’s comfort to guide each session.

Helping a dog become comfortable around people, dogs, and unfamiliar places does not mean arranging as many greetings as possible. The trainers featured in APDT Chronicles describe a more measured goal: give the dog supported exposure to varied situations, watch how the dog responds, and adjust or stop before the experience becomes overwhelming.

Socialization is exposure, not a greeting quota

Karen Reilly, CPDT-KSA, CNWI, frames socialization as “not interacting with everyone or every dog” but as “supported exposure to a variety of scenarios.” A dog can notice people, dogs, sounds, or activity without being asked to approach them. That distinction matters: the aim is to help the dog experience the setting at a manageable level, not to complete a checklist of introductions.

Reilly advises owners to observe the puppy’s reactions, avoid excessive exposure, and use familiar behaviors only when the puppy appears comfortable or relaxed. If the dog is not ready to engage, the owner can create more space or end the session rather than insist on a greeting.

Let the dog’s response set the pace

Watch the dog throughout an outing, not just at the moment of a planned interaction. The contributors emphasize body language and apparent comfort as guides to whether the current setting is manageable. If the dog becomes concerned, stops participating, or cannot take food it would normally accept, treat that as useful information about the situation—not as a reason to push harder.

Jamie McKay, CPDT-KSA, describes a dog repeatedly taken to busy stores for socialization. The dog shut down in those environments and would not accept treats; later, the dog worried about new places and doors. McKay says this experience helped shift her away from a checklist approach and toward prioritizing quality, support, and enough distance for the dog to succeed. Her account is an individual example, not proof that every busy outing will have the same effect.

Use distance and a calm setting to make observation easier

When a person, dog, or other distraction feels like too much, increase the distance. McKay puts it simply: “distance can be your friend!” Starting farther away can let a dog notice what is happening without being crowded into an interaction. Choose a place where you can keep others from coming too close and leave or reposition easily if the dog needs a break.

Try “Watching the World Go By”

Elizabeth “Kizz” Robinson describes sitting with a puppy in a quiet place where people, dogs, and other activity cannot approach too closely. Let the puppy watch. When the puppy notices something interesting, the owner can offer a small piece of food, then return to calm observation. The point is not to lure the puppy toward the distraction, but to make the experience of noticing it more manageable and positive.

Robinson says she previously suggested sessions of 10–15 minutes a couple of times per day, but now favors shorter practices followed by plenty of calm and rest. That is her personal account of how her advice has changed, not a universal duration or an established schedule for every dog.

Use food when it helps, and adapt when it does not

A small food reward can accompany calm observation or support a positive association with a new setting. McKay also describes using food at times to help a dog calm down or redirect toward sniffing. The trainers do not endorse a particular product, and food is not a measure of whether an exercise is succeeding: if the dog is too worried to take it, make the situation easier rather than repeatedly offering treats or moving closer.

Keep the dog’s needs and the setting in mind. The article gives examples of food as one possible training aid; it does not establish that every dog will find food useful in every situation.

Choose an exercise you can adjust or end

A useful exposure exercise is one where you can change the distance, reduce the activity, or leave without difficulty. Before beginning, consider whether:

  • the dog has enough space from the people, dogs, or other distractions;
  • the setting can remain calm enough for the dog to observe;
  • you can tell whether the dog appears comfortable or concerned;
  • a reward is useful to this dog in this moment; and
  • you can end the session without requiring a greeting or a completed exercise.

These are practical considerations drawn from the trainers’ examples, not a formal scoring system. A short, calm observation can be a worthwhile experience even if the dog never approaches anyone.

Give older puppies and adopted dogs individualized support

McKay notes that older puppies and adult dogs may have difficulty adjusting to a busier environment after adoption. Consider how that particular dog experiences the new place instead of assuming that age or adoption means the dog should quickly tolerate more activity. Build the relationship while training progresses, and use manageable settings, distance, and support when the dog is concerned.

The APDT Chronicles contributors offer professional perspectives and practical examples, not a controlled study or a universal protocol. If a dog persistently shuts down, shows fear, or struggles to adapt to unfamiliar places, individualized help from a qualified trainer may be appropriate.
