Kenneth, a shy white-and-gray cat at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, became a quiet companion to other cats who were still finding their footing. As he spent time near them, his own confidence around people grew, too. How Kenneth became a welcoming presence
Kenneth arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with a group of 80 cats from a large-scale humane case. At first, he was shy and more comfortable near other cats than around people. Caregiver Alicia McCormack noticed that he gravitated toward cats who were visible but not yet ready to interact with humans.
McCormack described his companions this way: “Kenneth gravitates to the cats who are willing to be seen but may not be ready to interact with humans yet,” she told Best Friends Animal Society.
Kenneth’s role was not to force contact or make the other cats socialize. He simply spent time alongside them. The account suggests that his calm presence mattered in this sanctuary setting, while leaving open whether another cat would respond similarly.

How Kenneth grew more comfortable with people
He could observe from a distance
In the beginning, Kenneth preferred watching from a safe distance. Caregivers put baby food in a bowl so he could choose when to approach. The story presents this as part of his individual care, not as advice about what to feed cats.

He started accepting gentle attention
Caregivers later saw Kenneth accept an occasional soft stroke and approach a visitor. He was no longer the last cat to come forward when a person offered attention.
