South Carolina’s State House educational page lists 16 entries under “Animals & Other Living Things.” They cover separate designations—including amphibian, animal, bird, butterfly, dog, duck, fish, wild game bird, heritage horse, heritage work animal, insect, marine mammals, reptile, shell and spider—not 16 creatures that are all legally called “the state animal.”
The white-tailed deer is South Carolina’s official state animal in the singular statutory category. The current South Carolina Code also adds the eastern brown pelican as the official state seabird under 2024 Act No. 186, effective May 20, 2024. That newer designation explains why an older 16-entry State House page is not a complete count of every current animal-related state symbol.

What the “16 official state animals” list actually counts
The number 16 comes from the South Carolina State House student-facing page titled “South Carolina State Symbols: Animals & Other Living Things.” Its heading groups several kinds of living symbols together for educational use. A shell is included alongside animals, and individual entries represent different legal or honorary categories.

For legal precision, only one entry has the general statutory title “official animal of the State”: the white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus. Other entries are official birds, fish, insects, heritage animals or similar category-specific symbols. The eastern brown pelican is now an additional state designation as the official seabird, even though it is absent from the older student-page list.

The 16 symbols, explained
Spotted salamander: state amphibian
The spotted salamander holds the amphibian designation. The State House account connects its selection to a campaign by a third-grade class at Woodlands Heights Elementary School in Spartanburg. The designation is cited as Act Number 79 of 1999, showing how a school project became part of the state-symbol record.
White-tailed deer: official state animal
This is the entry to use when a question asks for South Carolina’s official state animal without a qualifying category. Section 1-1-650 of the South Carolina Code states: “The white-tailed deer (odocoileus virginianus) is the official animal of the State.” The wording makes this designation distinct from the state bird, fish, reptile and other specialized symbols.
Carolina wren: state bird
The Carolina wren appears in the State House’s bird category. It is also featured in the official South Carolina State Symbols coloring-book PDF, which gives students a visual way to learn the state’s designated species.
Eastern tiger swallowtail: state butterfly
The eastern tiger swallowtail is South Carolina’s butterfly symbol. Its category matters: it is not a second “state animal” in the statutory sense, but one of the state’s designated living emblems. The coloring-book PDF includes it among the symbols presented for educational use.

Boykin Spaniel: state dog
The Boykin Spaniel is the State House page’s state-dog entry. The list treats a recognized dog breed as its own category rather than folding it into the general animal designation held by the white-tailed deer.
Wood duck: state duck
The wood duck occupies the state-duck category. Its separate listing illustrates how South Carolina’s symbol system can identify a particular kind of bird even when another bird has the broader state-bird title.
Striped bass: state fish
Striped bass is listed as the state fish. The State House page places it alongside the other category-specific symbols, so “state fish” should not be read as a replacement for the singular official-animal designation.
Wild turkey: state wild game bird
The wild turkey is designated as the state wild game bird. That wording identifies a particular classification of bird and differs from the unqualified state-bird category used for the Carolina wren.

Marsh Tacky: state heritage horse
The Marsh Tacky is described by the State House as a rare colonial Spanish horse breed unique to South Carolina and historically important in Lowcountry life. The Carolina Marsh Tacky Association was established in 2007 to preserve and promote the breed. Its state-symbol category is heritage horse, emphasizing cultural history as well as the animal itself.
Mule: state heritage work animal
The mule is South Carolina’s state heritage work animal. This designation records the animal’s place in the state’s working heritage rather than presenting it as the general official animal or as a wildlife category.
Carolina mantid: state insect
The Carolina mantid is the state insect. The State House explains that the designation recognizes a native, beneficial insect and its agricultural role, giving the category an explicit connection to farming and practical value.

Northern right whale: state migratory marine mammal
The northern right whale appears in the more specific migratory-marine-mammal category. The wording distinguishes this entry from the general marine-mammal designation held by the bottlenose dolphin.
Loggerhead turtle: state reptile
The loggerhead turtle is South Carolina’s state reptile. The State House says a fifth-grade class from Ninety-Six requested the designation. It also describes the turtle as federally listed as threatened and South Carolina’s coast as a nesting area. The designation is cited as Act Number 588 of 1988.
Lettered Olive: state shell
The Lettered Olive is the state shell. A shell is a hard protective structure rather than a separate animal designation, so it should be counted as one of the 16 State House “Animals & Other Living Things” entries but not described as another official state animal.

The Carolina wolf spider is listed under the state-spider category. As with the butterfly, insect and shell entries, its inclusion reflects the broad educational grouping used by the State House page rather than the singular statutory title reserved for the white-tailed deer.

The 2024 eastern brown pelican update
South Carolina’s current Code of Laws includes a newer animal-related designation that is not on the 16-entry student page. Under 2024 Act No. 186, effective May 20, 2024, “The eastern brown pelican is the official seabird of the State.”
This does not make the original 16-entry page incorrect; it explains its scope and age. The page groups the symbols for students, while the Code records the later seabird provision. A current answer should therefore present both facts: the State House list has 16 entries, and the current code adds the eastern brown pelican as official state seabird.
How the designations were created
South Carolina’s symbols reflect several routes to official recognition. Some are tied to legislative acts, such as Act Number 588 of 1988 for the loggerhead turtle and Act Number 79 of 1999 for the spotted salamander. The stories supplied by the State House show that student advocacy helped bring at least two designations forward: a third-grade campaign for the spotted salamander and a fifth-grade request for the loggerhead turtle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOther categories preserve cultural history. The Marsh Tacky is linked to colonial Spanish horse heritage and Lowcountry life, while the mule represents a heritage work-animal category. The Carolina mantid’s designation highlights agricultural usefulness. These examples show why the list includes heritage and category-specific symbols rather than only a single statewide animal.
Using the official coloring book
The South Carolina State House’s official state-symbols coloring-book PDF includes several animal entries, including the Carolina wren, eastern tiger swallowtail and loggerhead turtle. It is a free educational resource for classrooms, families and anyone introducing children to the state-symbol system. Because it is a teaching resource, use it alongside the current Code when you need the latest legal designation, especially for the 2024 seabird update.
Quick Recap
A precise answer to common wording
- “What is South Carolina’s official state animal?” The answer is the white-tailed deer.
- “What are the 16 official state animals?” The phrase refers to the 16 State House entries, which span multiple designation categories and include the Lettered Olive shell.
- “Is the list current?” It is the State House’s 16-entry educational list, but the current Code also contains the eastern brown pelican as official state seabird effective May 20, 2024.
- “Is the Lettered Olive an animal?” It is listed as the state shell, so it belongs to the broad living-things page but should not be counted as a separate state-animal designation.
