Spongy Moth Explained: The Insect Threatening Hundreds of North American Tree Species

The European spongy moth is a broad-host-range defoliator whose caterpillars favor oaks. One episode may be survivable, but repeated heavy defoliation can lead to tree decline and death.

The moth that can strip foliage from hundreds of North American tree species is the European spongy moth, Lymantria dispar dispar. Its caterpillars—rather than the adult moths—eat leaves and sometimes needles. One defoliation episode does not automatically kill a tree, but severe outbreaks or repeated heavy defoliation can cause decline and mortality, especially when trees are already stressed.

What is the spongy moth?

Spongy moth is the current common name for Lymantria dispar dispar, a non-native forest insect established in the United States since 1869. The Entomological Society of America adopted “spongy moth” in 2022; “gypsy moth” is an older name that still appears in older records and public discussions.

The destructive stage is the larva, or caterpillar. After hatching, larvae climb into the canopy and chew through foliage. The U.S. Forest Service and state forestry agencies describe the insect as capable of feeding on hundreds of tree and shrub species. Ohio’s agriculture agency lists more than 300 tree and shrub species as hosts. That broad host range does not mean every tree is equally attractive: Virginia forestry guidance says oaks are preferred, with white oak and chestnut oak particularly favored on ridgetops.

Can one spongy moth outbreak kill a tree?

Not necessarily. A healthy tree can often replace foliage after a single year of defoliation. The risk rises when caterpillars remove most of the leaves, when drought or other pests are also present, or when heavy defoliation recurs in successive years.

Foliage is the tree’s energy-producing tissue. Replacing a canopy consumes stored carbohydrates, and repeated loss can leave a tree with too little energy for growth, defense and winter survival. The U.S. Forest Service explains that several successive years of defoliation may ultimately result in tree mortality. New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection guidance likewise notes that healthy trees may survive one defoliation year, while several successive years of heavy defoliation can produce decline and death.

Mortality is therefore a conditional outcome, not a guaranteed result for every infested tree. Species, age, soil moisture, weather, canopy loss and previous stress all affect the result. A tree that is leafless in June deserves attention, but its final outcome cannot be diagnosed from a single photograph.

Which trees and shrubs do the caterpillars eat?

Spongy moth larvae are generalists with a strong preference for certain hardwoods.

Host pattern What the agency guidance indicates
Broad host range Larvae feed on hundreds of tree and shrub species; Ohio reports more than 300.
Preferred trees Oaks are commonly favored, including white oak and chestnut oak in Virginia’s ridgetop observations.
Plant tissue consumed Leaves are the main food; the Forest Service also notes that larvae can eat needles.
Unequal risk Host use is not uniform. Presence of a tree species does not guarantee heavy feeding, and a less-preferred species can still be defoliated during a dense outbreak.

When preferred oaks are abundant, feeding can be concentrated in those stands. During large outbreaks, however, caterpillars can move onto many other deciduous trees and shrubs and may consume conifer needles as well.

How the damage develops

Egg masses survive the winter

Egg masses are laid on bark, firewood, outdoor furniture, vehicles, stonework and other sheltered surfaces. Ohio’s Department of Agriculture describes each mass as containing about 500 to 1,000 eggs. Because masses can be attached to objects that move, they are an important pathway for accidental spread.

Small larvae disperse and begin feeding

When larvae hatch, they may climb upward and disperse on silk threads carried by wind. They begin by skeletonizing leaves, leaving veins and parts of the leaf surface behind. As they grow, they consume progressively larger sections.

Large caterpillars can remove an entire canopy

Ohio agency guidance gives a practical measure of feeding intensity: a two-inch larva can consume up to one square foot of foliage in 24 hours. Hundreds or thousands of larvae feeding together can turn a green canopy brown or nearly bare in a short time.

Trees attempt to refoliate

Many deciduous trees produce a second flush of leaves after early-season feeding. Refolliation uses stored reserves, so a tree may look green again while still carrying physiological stress. Repeated defoliation is more dangerous than a single event because reserves may not be restored before the next attack.

How to recognize a spongy moth problem

  • Defoliation in spring or early summer: Leaves may show ragged holes, skeletonization or complete disappearance.
  • Visible caterpillars: Mature larvae are hairy and commonly show pairs of colored spots along the back, although appearance varies with age and conditions.
  • Egg masses: Look for tan, felt-like patches on tree trunks, firewood, vehicles, buildings and outdoor items.
  • Frass and silk: Droppings beneath the canopy and silk threads can accompany active feeding.
  • Repeated symptoms: A tree that is repeatedly bare, has dead branches or shows thin regrowth needs a closer health assessment.

Identification based only on a caterpillar photograph can be uncertain because several native species also defoliate trees. State forestry or agriculture agencies can confirm an identification and explain current quarantine boundaries.

European and Asian spongy moths are not the same

The name “spongy moth” can refer to related forms. The European form is the established population in the United States. Asian forms have not established in the country according to the U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station page, although they have occasionally been intercepted at ports. Their status can change if new introductions occur, so current federal and state notices matter.

Characteristic European spongy moth Asian spongy moth forms
U.S. status Long established; introduction dates to 1869. Not established in the United States in the cited Forest Service account; occasional port interceptions reported.
Female flight Females cannot fly. Females can fly.
Spread implication Dispersal depends heavily on larval movement, wind and transport of egg-bearing objects. Flight could increase spread potential, but the cited source describes this as a biological risk rather than a measured future rate.

Do not assume that a flying female is evidence of the established European population. If you suspect an Asian form, preserve the insect or a clear photograph and contact the relevant agriculture or forestry authority rather than moving firewood or outdoor equipment.

How large is the problem?

Impact figures need a date and geography. A U.S. Forest Service Northeast regional account reports more than 12 million acres defoliated in the Northeast since 2000, attributing the figure to USDA data from 2017. This is a cumulative historical total for that region, not a current-year estimate and not a measure of tree mortality.

The Forest Service’s 2020 explanatory notes report that more than 20,000 acres of federal land were treated in fiscal year 2018. Those treated acres included pheromone applications intended to disrupt mating. Treated acreage is not the same as acreage defoliated, and neither number predicts what will happen in a particular yard.

What should a homeowner do?

  1. Confirm the cause. Photograph caterpillars, egg masses and the affected canopy. Compare the timing and symptoms with guidance from your state forestry or agriculture agency.
  2. Check for spread pathways. Inspect firewood, trailers, outdoor furniture, vehicles and other items that may carry egg masses. Follow any state or federal quarantine instructions before moving them.
  3. Assess the tree’s condition. Note whether the tree was stressed by drought, construction damage, disease or earlier defoliation. Record dead branches, sparse regrowth and repeated years of canopy loss.
  4. Use official treatment advice. State programs may use quarantine, eradication, suppression or local treatments. Product choice, timing and legal requirements vary by location, tree size and life stage, so follow current agency directions rather than applying a generic recipe.
  5. Get an evaluation for recurring or severe damage. A qualified local arborist can assess root-zone stress, structural hazards and whether the tree is recovering. Professional advice is most useful when defoliation is repeated, the tree is large or branches are dying.

Removing accessible egg masses before hatch can reduce the number of larvae, but dispose of them according to local instructions. Do not transport attached material to another property. A tree that is already hazardous should be handled as a safety issue, not as a do-it-yourself pest project.

What “Slow the Spread” means

The U.S. Forest Service describes a landscape-scale Slow the Spread effort aimed at reducing movement at the leading edge of the generally infested area. The program has used pheromone flakes to disrupt adult mating. This is an area-wide management technique, not evidence that a household pheromone trap is necessary or equivalent.

Program boundaries, quarantine rules and recommended treatments can change. For current instructions, use the latest notices from USDA and your state forestry or agriculture department. Local agencies can also distinguish an established population from a new detection that may trigger an eradication response.

Common misconceptions

“One season of bare branches means the tree is dead.”

Many healthy trees survive one defoliation episode and refoliate. The danger is greatest when severe feeding repeats or the tree has other stresses.

“Hundreds of host species means every tree is equally attractive.”

The host count describes potential feeding range. Oaks are preferred in the Virginia guidance, and feeding intensity varies with tree species, outbreak density and local conditions.

“Asian and European moths are interchangeable names.”

They differ in female flight and U.S. establishment status. Those differences affect monitoring and spread risk.

“A regional treatment acreage figure tells me whether my tree will die.”

Regional acres defoliated or treated describe program scale. They cannot replace an inspection of an individual tree and its growing conditions.

When to seek help

Contact your state forestry or agriculture agency when you find an unfamiliar moth, a suspected new infestation or egg masses on material that may be moved across a quarantine boundary. Arrange a tree-health assessment when a tree is repeatedly defoliated, fails to refoliate, develops extensive dieback or poses a falling-branch hazard. The practical goal is not to eliminate every caterpillar; it is to identify the insect accurately, prevent avoidable spread and protect trees that are most likely to decline under repeated stress.
