The safe sequence is to identify the animal and its entry point, make sure every squirrel can leave (including dependent young), then close and repair the opening with durable materials. Squirrels can chew through siding, eaves, insulation and the insulation around electrical wiring; exposed wires can create a fire hazard. If you see damaged wiring, leave it alone and arrange a qualified electrical inspection.
These clues can indicate squirrel activity, but no single sign proves the species. Inspect from a safe location, document the damage, and use an exclusion method that prevents re-entry without trapping an animal inside. Penn State Extension describes this approach, including one-way doors, durable mesh repairs and carefully monitored trapping: Penn State Extension’s Tree Squirrels guidance.

13 signs that may point to squirrels in your attic
The following are inspection clues rather than a diagnostic test. Several can have other causes, so look for a pattern: an exterior opening, evidence of gnawing, and activity connected to the same location.

1. You see a squirrel entering or leaving the roofline
An observed animal using an eave, soffit, vent or roof junction is the strongest direct clue. Watch from the ground or another safe position and note the exact location and time. Do not climb onto a roof to follow it.

2. Repeated travel to one eave or roof junction
Squirrels often use a regular route to a nest. Repeated movement toward the same gap helps you locate the access point, even when the opening is hidden behind a fascia or soffit.
-
3. Fresh-looking gnaw marks on siding or trim
Penn State describes squirrels chewing siding and areas under eaves to create openings. Splintered edges, paired tooth marks or a widened seam are reasons to inspect the adjacent attic space.
-
4. A gap under an eave that is larger than it should be
A damaged joint, lifted fascia or enlarged construction gap can become an entry hole. Compare the suspect area with intact sections of the roofline and photograph it before making repairs.

5. A torn or displaced attic-vent screen
Vent covers are common weak points. A bent frame, missing screen or opening around the vent can allow access and should be checked for chew damage rather than simply covered from the inside.

6. Gnawing around a roof or wall penetration
Look at places where pipes, cables or other building components pass through the exterior. Chewed edges around a penetration can connect directly to a wall cavity or attic.
-
7. Insulation that has been disturbed or pulled apart
Penn State reports squirrels nesting in buildings and chewing insulation. Flattened, displaced or gathered insulation can indicate a nest site, especially near an exterior opening.
-
8. A concentrated bundle of nesting material
Insulation, leaves and other material gathered into a compact area may mark a nest. Avoid reaching into it: a nest can contain young, and disturbing it before an exclusion plan is ready can create a larger problem.

9. Chewed insulation around electrical wires
Examine wiring visually from a safe distance. Squirrels may chew the insulation surrounding wires, leaving bare conductors. That damage is a fire hazard; do not touch or move the wiring, and have a qualified electrician assess it.

10. Daylight visible through a roofline opening
If light is visible from inside the attic, the exterior envelope is open. The light itself does not identify the animal, but combined with gnawing or squirrel activity it makes an access point likely.
-
11. Scratching, rustling or chewing sounds overhead
Noise can prompt an inspection, particularly when it recurs near dawn or dusk, but sounds are not squirrel-specific. Birds, rats and other wildlife can make similar noises, so confirm with exterior evidence before choosing a removal method.
-
12. Droppings or other debris near a suspected route
Droppings can indicate that an animal is using a space, yet they do not establish species by themselves. Treat them as a reason to look for an entry hole and nesting damage, not as proof that a squirrel is present.

13. Ongoing activity after a superficial patch
If movement or new gnawing continues after a small repair, the actual access point may be elsewhere or the patch may not be durable. Recheck the entire eave, vent and roof junction rather than sealing additional interior surfaces.

Confirm the animal and locate the access point
Species identification matters because exclusion timing and legal trapping rules differ. Begin outside in daylight. From the ground, inspect eaves, soffits, fascia, roof vents and places where branches touch the roof. Penn State recommends watching squirrels to determine where they enter. Use binoculars or a camera rather than approaching wildlife.
Inside, use a flashlight without disturbing nests or wiring. Map each damaged area to an exterior location. If you cannot safely reach the roofline, if the opening is in a dangerous position, or if you cannot tell whether young are present, stop the inspection and arrange professional help.
Safe squirrel removal: the correct order
- Plan around dependent young. Do not close an opening while an adult or young animal may still be inside. A trapped squirrel can chew a new exit and cause more structural damage. Watch for the adult’s route and activity, and obtain professional assistance when a nest may contain young.
- Choose an exit-only method. A properly fitted one-way exclusion door allows squirrels to leave but blocks re-entry. Penn State also discusses deterrents and trapping; several compatible measures may work better than relying on one alone. A one-way device is not a substitute for checking that no young remain inside.
- Keep people and pets away from the work area. Do not handle a squirrel, reach into a nest or attempt to corner an animal in the attic. Secure the room below if falling debris is possible, and keep children and pets away from the exterior opening.
- Verify that the attic is empty. Continue observing the access point after the exclusion device is installed. Look for continued movement, fresh disturbance or calls from inside. If activity suggests an animal remains, do not proceed to permanent closure.
- Seal the opening with durable material. Once exit is confirmed, repair the structural defect and cover vulnerable openings. Penn State names heavy 0.5-inch wire mesh or other suitable repairs; the CDC’s flying-squirrel investigation also describes heavy-gauge screen for attic vents and roof joists in that specific context. Fasten mesh to sound framing and eliminate gaps around its edges.
- Remove the temporary device and recheck. After the repair, inspect the patch from outside and inside at different times of day. New gnawing, displaced mesh or renewed noise means the exclusion is incomplete or another opening exists.
How the main removal options compare
| Approach | Allows exit? | Blocks re-entry? | Main risks or conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way exclusion door | Yes | Yes, when fitted correctly | Do not use until you have considered dependent young and identified the complete opening. |
| Durable mesh repair after confirmed exit | Not applicable | Yes | Best long-term result only after the attic is empty; use heavy, securely fastened material. |
| Deterrents used with exclusion | May encourage movement toward an exit | No, not by themselves | Penn State discusses deterrents such as lights and polybutenes, but effectiveness varies and they should not replace physical repair. |
| Live-capture trap | No; the animal is confined | No, unless the opening is also repaired | Follow local law and welfare requirements. Penn State advises checking traps twice daily; relocation is not universally legal or appropriate. |
Repair and prevention after removal
Use the right barrier
For an Amazon search or hardware-store request, the supported product category is heavy-gauge hardware cloth for squirrel exclusion. Penn State specifies heavy 0.5-inch wire mesh as an example of suitable repair material. The barrier must be attached to solid framing, not merely stapled to loose roofing material, and its edges should overlap the damaged area.

Harden every likely entry point
Repair the opening the squirrel used, then inspect neighboring eaves, soffits, vents and roof penetrations. Trim branches that provide a direct route to the roof where practical, and replace failed vent screens. A patch that leaves a second gap will not solve the problem.

Coordinate roof, electrical and attic work
If insulation is damaged around wiring, schedule an electrician before covering the area. If the roof or fascia is compromised, arrange structural repair after wildlife exclusion. Renters should notify the landlord or property manager before exterior or electrical work and document the opening with photographs.
Safety concerns you should not minimize
Electrical fire risk
Chewed wire insulation can expose conductors and create a fire hazard. Do not pull insulation away, tape damaged wires, or crawl across an attic to investigate closely. Keep the area clear and contact a qualified electrician for evaluation and repair.
Bites and scratches: when rabies advice applies
According to the CDC, rabies exposure assessment is driven primarily by a bite, scratch or other possible direct exposure. An attic sighting, noise or damaged insulation is not itself a rabies exposure. If a squirrel bites or scratches anyone, wash the wound and seek medical advice promptly; public-health professionals decide whether post-exposure prophylaxis is needed. See CDC About Rabies.

Flying-squirrel parasites and sylvatic typhus
The CDC report on sylvatic epidemic typhus concerns flying squirrels and their external parasites, not every squirrel found in an attic. In that specific 2004–2006 cluster, the article states: “Squirrel removal without concomitant arthropod control is not recommended because the presence of potentially infected external parasites may increase the risk for disease transmission to humans.” Read the full context in the CDC Emerging Infectious Diseases article. Do not generalize its finding to ordinary gray or fox squirrel activity without evidence of flying squirrels or parasite exposure.
Nest material, fleas and contamination
A historical CDC archive entry notes that squirrel fleas can become a household pest when squirrels nest in attics and are later killed or excluded. It discusses removing nest material and insecticide use, but it is not a current, step-by-step pesticide protocol. For substantial nest contamination, droppings or suspected parasites, obtain current local guidance and use a qualified wildlife or environmental professional rather than improvising chemical treatment. The historical source is The Squirrel Flea, Orchopeas howardii.
When professional wildlife help is the safer choice
Call a qualified wildlife-exclusion professional when the opening is high or unstable, young may be present, you cannot confirm that the attic is empty, contamination is extensive, or electrical and structural damage is significant. Ask how the provider identifies entry points, prevents re-entry, handles dependent young, checks traps, and repairs the opening. Verify licensing or permits required in your jurisdiction, humane practices, insurance, and service coverage before work begins. No trapping or relocation method is universally legal, so local rules must govern the decision.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that make squirrel problems worse
- Sealing immediately: This can imprison adults or young and encourage destructive chewing.
- Relying on noise or a repellent alone: Such measures do not repair the opening or guarantee that an animal has left.
- Using light mesh or a loose patch: A weak barrier can be chewed or pushed aside.
- Ignoring wire damage: Exposed conductors require electrical assessment, not cosmetic covering.
- Handling wildlife or nests: Avoid direct contact and seek professional help when safe confirmation is not possible.
- Setting a trap without checking it: Penn State advises checking traps twice daily, and local law may restrict trapping or relocation.
