There are six individually named dog-like companions in StarWars.com’s current creature feature. The other 39 names in this list are drawn from recognizable Star Wars characters, droids, and places, so you can choose between a name with a direct animal connection and one that simply signals your fandom.

What counts as a Star Wars dog name?

The phrase “Star Wars dog names” can mean two different things. A narrow, canon-focused list uses names assigned to individual canine or canine-like creatures in the story. A practical naming list also borrows from heroes, villains, droids, planets, and locations that a dog can carry as a nickname.

Keeping those categories separate matters. The StarWars.com feature The Galactically Good ‘Doggos’ of Star Wars – Update, written by Kelly Knox and updated September 17, 2026, discusses ten kinds of canine-like creatures but names only six individual companions. It is not evidence that the franchise has 45 named dogs. This article therefore labels the six animal names as confirmed companions and the remaining entries as broader Star Wars-inspired choices.

Knox’s line, “No matter the galaxy, all dogs are good dogs,” is a useful spirit for the list: pick the sound that suits your dog, not just the reference you recognize.

The six confirmed named companions

These are the strongest choices if you want a name attached directly to a creature in an official Star Wars source.

Name Creature and story context Why it works as a pet name
Marrok An anooba and Embo’s loyal companion during the Clone Wars. The official Databank also identifies Marrok as the working pet taken in by bounty hunter Embo. Two distinct syllables, a firm ending, and an unusual sound that is easy to distinguish outdoors.
Keibu An anooba accompanying Embo after the fall of the Empire. Short, bright, and uncommon; the long “ee” sound carries well when called.
Ember Bell Zettifar’s charhound companion in The High Republic. A familiar English word with a warm, energetic feel, suitable for a red-coated or lively dog.
Taomat Syke’s favorite Sibian hound. A distinctive three-syllable option for an owner who wants a deep-cut reference.
Elvis A rescued Ghor hound living with an owner in Palmo in Andor. Immediately recognizable, playful, and simple to shorten to “El.”
Batcher A female lurca hound once designated LH-201. Omega frees her, gives her the name Batcher, and she joins the Clone Force 99 family. A sturdy, two-syllable name with a natural nickname, “Batch.”

Batcher’s former designation is part of her story, not an alternative name you need to use. Omega’s renaming is the meaningful moment: it marks the hound’s shift from an experimental label to an individual member of a family.

Creature references that are not individual dog names

The same official feature mentions several other animals, but it does not provide personal names for them. A frogdog belonging to Mrs. Ikk, a barghest owned by Gwellis Bagnoro, Loth-wolves, massiffs, and vulptices are useful world-building references, not additional entries in the six-name canon list.

  • Frogdogs: The Databank describes the frogdogs of At Attin as bright, inquisitive domestic pets sought for companionship and as loyal and attentive. That makes “Frogdog” a species joke or theme, not the name of a confirmed individual.
  • Loth-wolves: The feature presents them as massive and wild rather than ordinary household pets.
  • Lurca hounds: They are difficult to domesticate and are controlled harshly in the context described.
  • Vulptices: They are not typically tamed or domesticated.
  • Loth-cats: The Databank identifies these as feline, not canine. A domesticated Loth-cat can inspire an animal-themed name, but it should not be counted as a Star Wars dog.

Those distinctions keep a fun naming list from accidentally claiming that every creature mentioned in a source is a named dog or a realistic pet analogue.

How to choose the right name for your dog

Decide how direct the reference should be

If you want a name that can be defended with a precise canon connection, choose Marrok, Keibu, Ember, Taomat, Elvis, or Batcher. If recognizability matters more than animal continuity, Luke, Leia, Chewie, Grogu, or Yoda will be understood by more people. Place names are a quieter option for owners who prefer an inside reference.

Test the sound at normal volume

Say the full name from several steps away, then say it in the shortened form you expect to use. Names with one or two clear syllables are usually easiest to deliver quickly, while longer choices can work if the household agrees on a consistent nickname. Avoid a name that sounds too close to a frequent cue, another pet’s name, or a family member’s name.

  • Vibrant and bold, this beautiful polyester dog collar is made to show off your dog's unique style through all the seasons.

Match the tone, not just the character

  • Cute and companionable: Ember, Elvis, Chewie, Grogu, Boba, or Naboo.
  • Heroic: Marrok, Luke, Leia, Rey, Ahsoka, Hera, or Cassian.
  • Mischievous: Hondo, Lando, Wedge, Artoo, or BB-8.
  • Unusual and dramatic: Taomat, Thrawn, Maul, Hux, Tatooine, or Hoth.

These tone groupings are naming judgments rather than official classifications. Your dog’s behavior and your own taste should decide the final match.

Try a short household test

  1. Write down your top three names and say each one in an ordinary sentence, such as “Come, ___.”
  2. Use the name during a calm activity for a day or two, without changing it repeatedly.
  3. Check that everyone in the household pronounces it the same way.
  4. Keep the name that feels natural at both conversational volume and an urgent recall.

Quick shortlist by length

“BB-8” is normally spoken as two repeated syllables, “Bee-Bee,” even though it is written as a designation. Padmé and Qi’ra sit between the groups depending on how your household pronounces the accented names.
