Yes—stingrays are fish. They are cartilaginous fishes, related to sharks, skates, and other rays. Their unusual flattened bodies, wing-like fins, dorsal eyes, and defensive tail spines make them look unlike familiar bony fish, but those differences do not change their classification as fish.

Yes—stingrays are fish. More specifically, they are cartilaginous fishes, meaning their skeletons are made primarily of cartilage rather than the mineralized bone found in most familiar fish. Stingrays belong to the same broad evolutionary group as sharks, skates, and other rays.

In commonly used classifications, stingrays are associated with the order Myliobatiformes, within the cartilaginous-fish class Chondrichthyes and the shark-and-ray lineage Elasmobranchii. The broad answer is straightforward, but the finer details—especially which families belong in which order—can vary as taxonomists compare anatomical and molecular evidence.

Stingray classification at a glance

Classification level Common placement
Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
Class Chondrichthyes — cartilaginous fishes
Major lineage Elasmobranchii — sharks and batoid fishes in commonly used treatments
Order commonly associated with stingrays Myliobatiformes
Families Several, depending on the taxonomic authority and classification used

FishBase’s order summary describes myliobatiform rays as flattened fishes with eyes and spiracles on the upper surface, gill openings on the underside, enlarged pectoral fins extending toward the head, and no anal fin. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA also place stingrays within the cartilaginous-fish branch rather than among bony fishes. NOAA’s shark and ray overview provides a useful introduction to this relationship, while FishBase’s Myliobatiformes summary shows why the detailed classification is more complicated than a single common name suggests.

Why do stingrays look so different from ordinary fish?

“Fish” describes a broad vertebrate group, not one particular body shape. A tuna, seahorse, shark, eel, and stingray can look dramatically different while all being fish.

Stingrays have evolved a distinctive body plan for life in or around the seafloor:

  • Flattened body: The body forms a broad disc that may be rounded, diamond-shaped, or kite-like.
  • Expanded pectoral fins: The fins are enlarged and attached toward the head, creating the wing-like outline associated with rays.
  • Dorsal eyes: The eyes usually sit on top of the body, where they can remain useful when the animal is resting on the bottom.
  • Spiracles: Openings behind the eyes allow water to enter for breathing. This is particularly helpful when a ray is lying on or partly buried in sand, because it need not draw as much water through its mouth.
  • Ventral mouth and gills: The mouth and gill openings are generally on the underside, facing the seafloor.
  • Long tail: Many stingrays have a narrow, whip-like tail bearing one or more defensive spines.

The flattened shape supports bottom-oriented feeding and camouflage, but it does not mean every stingray simply lies motionless on the seabed. Some rays use an undulating motion of the pectoral fins, while others are active swimmers that travel through the water column. Smithsonian Ocean contrasts bottom-resting southern stingrays with more actively swimming spotted eagle rays in its overview of skates and rays.

Stingray, ray, and skate: what is the difference?

Ray is the broader everyday term. Stingrays are one type of ray, but not every ray is a stingray. The broader batoid group includes stingrays, skates, electric rays, butterfly rays, manta rays, guitarfishes, sawfishes, and other related forms. As the Florida Museum explains in its skates-and-rays FAQ, these names are useful in ordinary conversation but do not always map neatly onto a single simple taxonomic division.

Stingrays versus skates

Stingrays and skates are close relatives, and both are flattened cartilaginous fishes. Their appearance can overlap, so no single visual clue is perfect for every species. The following distinctions are useful starting points:

Feature Many stingrays Many skates
Tail Long, narrow, and whip-like Usually shorter, thicker, and more fleshy
Defensive spine Commonly has one or more barbed tail spines Generally lacks the characteristic stingray spine
Disc outline Often rounded, diamond-shaped, or kite-like Often more angular or triangular, though species vary
Reproduction Many are live-bearing Many lay egg cases

Live birth versus egg-laying is a useful introductory distinction, not an exception-free identification rule. Reproductive biology varies across batoid lineages, so a confident identification should use the species’ anatomy, range, and taxonomic information as well. The National Aquarium’s comparison of stingrays and skates discusses the practical differences without treating common names as a perfect scientific key.

What is the sting in a stingray?

The spine is primarily a defensive structure, not a hunting weapon. It is located on the tail and can be coated with tissue that makes a puncture especially painful. A ray generally prefers to escape rather than confront a person.

Most injuries happen when someone steps on a concealed ray in shallow water, attempts to pick one up, or restrains and handles it. A stingray is not accurately described as an animal that routinely attacks people; it is more accurate to say that it can injure a person when surprised, trapped, or touched.

How to reduce the chance of a stingray injury

  • In shallow sandy water where rays may be present, shuffle your feet instead of taking large steps. The movement gives a ray more warning and an opportunity to move away.
  • Do not grab, chase, pin, or attempt to hold a wild ray.
  • Keep a safe distance even when a ray appears calm or accustomed to people.
  • If someone is injured, leave the water and seek prompt medical evaluation. A puncture can involve retained spine material, tissue damage, infection, or sensitive anatomical areas. General online safety advice is not a substitute for professional medical care.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium recommends foot-shuffling as a low-impact precaution in shallow ray habitat. The advice is not a guarantee of safety, but it reduces the likelihood of surprising an animal beneath the sand. FishBase’s information on stingray families also describes the spine as defensive and emphasizes that contact is the main risk to people.

Where do stingrays live?

Stingrays occur in marine environments around the world. Many familiar species occupy tropical and subtropical coastal waters, including sandy bottoms, shallow bays, estuaries, and seagrass beds. The southern stingray, for example, is associated with western Atlantic coastal habitats that include areas around the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and nearby waters.

But “all stingrays live in shallow saltwater” would be too broad. The group includes animals with different depths, ranges, swimming styles, and habitat preferences.

Freshwater stingrays

Freshwater stingrays are real stingrays, not merely marine rays that temporarily tolerate fresh water. River stingrays in the family Potamotrygonidae are primarily Neotropical freshwater animals associated with South American river systems. Their taxonomy includes multiple genera and many species, and the group is complex enough that identification should be tied to a particular species rather than to the general label “freshwater stingray.”

This distinction matters for pet-related searches. A freshwater stingray is a specialized wild animal with substantial space, water-quality, diet, legal, and welfare requirements—not a beginner aquarium fish. Those husbandry questions are separate from the basic classification question and cannot be answered safely by treating all stingrays as interchangeable.

How many kinds of stingrays are there?

There is no single permanent number that applies regardless of date or taxonomic authority. FishBase lists numerous families within or associated with Myliobatiformes, including Dasyatidae, Gymnuridae, Hexatrygonidae, Mobulidae, Myliobatidae, Plesiobatidae, Potamotrygonidae, Rhinopteridae, Urolophidae, Urotrygonidae, and Zanobatidae. Different databases may recognize, merge, split, or rearrange groups as new evidence becomes available.

The most accurate general answer is:

Stingrays are a diverse group of batoid fishes represented by multiple families and many species. The exact count depends on the taxonomic authority and the date of the database being used.

Researchers have revised relationships among stingray lineages using molecular as well as anatomical data. A study indexed by PubMed illustrates why a classification should not be presented as permanently settled at every family and genus level. For a species-level answer, use a named database, region, and access date rather than quoting an unexplained universal total.

Are manta rays and eagle rays stingrays?

Manta rays and eagle rays are related myliobatiform rays, but everyday language usually does not call every manta or eagle ray a “stingray.” Their bodies, feeding methods, swimming behavior, and tail structures differ from those of the typical bottom-dwelling stingray familiar to beachgoers.

Even within related ray groups, the presence or absence of a tail spine can vary by genus and species. Therefore, “has a spine” is helpful for recognizing many stingrays, but it should not be used as the sole basis for reconstructing the entire classification. A species’ scientific name and lineage are more reliable than whether its common name happens to include the word stingray.

A representative species: the southern stingray

The southern stingray, Hypanus americanus, is a useful example of a familiar coastal stingray. FishBase places it within Elasmobranchii, Myliobatiformes, and the family Dasyatidae. It occurs in western Atlantic waters, including marine and brackish-associated coastal habitats around the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and adjacent regions. Its broad disc, underside-oriented mouth, dorsal eyes, and long tail illustrate many of the features people associate with stingrays.

It should not be treated as a model for every member of the group. Other stingrays and related rays can differ greatly in body size, disc shape, depth, geography, habitat, and swimming behavior. The FishBase species account for the southern stingray is a better source for that species’ particular range and classification than a generalized stingray description.

Common stingray misconceptions

“Stingrays are not fish because they have no bones.”

Incorrect. Their skeleton is primarily cartilage, but cartilage is the defining feature of one major fish lineage. Sharks, skates, and rays are fish even though they do not have the heavily mineralized skeleton typical of most bony fishes.

“Every ray is a stingray.”

Incorrect. Ray is the broader term. Electric rays, manta rays, butterfly rays, skates, guitarfishes, sawfishes, and other batoids are not interchangeable with the everyday term stingray.

“Any flat, fish-like animal is a stingray.”

Incorrect. Skates and several other batoids can have a similar flattened outline. Tail shape, the presence of defensive spines, disc proportions, geographic range, and reproductive information can all help, but species-level identification may require a specialist guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Stingrays attack people.”

Misleading. Stingrays are generally shy. Most human injuries are defensive responses when an animal is stepped on, restrained, or directly handled. That does not make the spine harmless: a defensive strike can cause a serious puncture injury, so wildlife should be observed without contact.

Further reading for identification

If you want to move from the basic question—“Are stingrays fish?”—to identifying species and understanding ray diversity, choose a resource whose scope matches your needs. An advanced global reference such as Rays of the World is described by its publisher as a comprehensive illustrated atlas of ray diversity; it is a ray reference, not a stingray-only book. Readers working in or around the Gulf of Mexico may find Sharks, Skates, and Rays of the Gulf of Mexico: A Field Guide more practical because its geographic scope is regional.

For younger readers, Stingrays! Underwater Fliers is designed as a children’s introduction rather than as a comprehensive taxonomic reference. Before buying any book, check the current edition, format, geographic coverage, availability, and whether it is intended as a field guide or a general natural-history book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are stingrays fish or mammals?

Yes. Stingrays are fish, but they are not bony fish. Their skeletons are made primarily of cartilage, placing them in the same broad group as sharks, skates, and other cartilaginous fishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a ray and a stingray?

A ray is a broad common term for many flattened cartilaginous fishes. A stingray is one kind of ray, usually recognized by a long tail and one or more defensive tail spines. Manta rays, electric rays, skates, and sawfishes are related rays but are not all stingrays.

How can you tell a stingray from a skate?

Many stingrays have long, whip-like tails and defensive spines, while skates generally have shorter, thicker tails and lack the characteristic stingray spine. Many references also contrast live-bearing stingrays with egg-laying skates, but reproduction is not an exception-free identification rule.

Do all stingrays live in saltwater?

No. Many species live in tropical or subtropical marine coastal habitats, but freshwater river stingrays also occur in South American river systems. Stingrays and related rays also differ in depth, swimming behavior, and habitat.

The Bottom Line

Stingrays are fish—specifically, cartilaginous fishes related to sharks, skates, and other rays. They are commonly associated with Myliobatiformes, a diverse group whose detailed family-level classification can change. “Ray” is broader than “stingray,” and the safest way to distinguish similar animals is to consider anatomy, habitat, and species-level information rather than relying on a single common-name rule.
