According to a 2022 iHeartDogs retrospective by Dina Fantegrossi, he stayed with them for 430 miles and ended up in Sweden with Lindnord. The details below come from that account. We found no first-party or official records that confirm them independently.
How Arthur met the team
Fantegrossi’s retrospective says the meeting happened on the fourth day of the race. Lindnord and his teammates stopped for a meal before a rainforest trek. Lindnord noticed a stray that was thin and dirty and had a wound on its back. He gave the dog some food from a can of Swedish meatballs. (iHeartDogs, May 27, 2022)
The dog did not leave after the meal. The four team members later named him King Arthur, and he kept following them as the race continued.
The journey, as reported
The account says the team first tried to discourage Arthur from following. They worried about his safety in such punishing terrain. He kept coming anyway.

- Tangle-Free 360° Swivel: Featuring a heavy-duty metal clasp that rotates 360 degrees, this ensures the rope never gets twisted or tangled, no matter how much your dog moves around. The zinc alloy hook is rust-proof and easy to clip onto any dog collar or harness in seconds
- Versatile for Any Activity: Park walks, trail hikes, or yard training. Offers ideal balance of freedom and control. Comes in 4ft, 5ft, 6ft lengths and 12 colors. 3/8" diameter suits small to medium dogs – lightweight and non-bulky. For medium and large dogs, choose 1/2" diameter
- Distance: the retrospective reports that Arthur followed the team for 430 miles. The race’s official course length and Arthur’s exact route were not established in the sources we found, so treat the figure as the article’s own.
- Terrain: mud, mountain passes and other difficult ground.
- Water: during a kayak section, Arthur entered the water alongside the team. Lindnord then pulled him to safety.
- Toll: the article says Arthur suffered injuries and exhaustion over the six-day journey.
- Result: the team did not win the championship.
What happened to Arthur after the race
According to the retrospective, a fundraising account received donations to help bring Arthur to Sweden. It describes paperwork, treatment for his wounds and a four-month quarantine before he reached his new home with Lindnord. The article also says Lindnord wrote a book about their experience. We did not find transport, veterinary or adoption records to back up the specifics, so these remain the retrospective’s account.
Is the dog in Arthur the King real?
The film Arthur the King was inspired by this account, but its details differ from the real one. A 2024 iHeartDogs article about the film names the lead character Michael Light, played by Mark Wahlberg. It sets the championship story in the Dominican Republic and describes it as ten days and 435 miles. (iHeartDogs, January 23, 2024)
