The sulcata, or African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), is the largest tortoise living on Africa’s mainland and the largest living continental tortoise. Only the giant tortoises of Aldabra and the Galápagos are generally placed ahead of it in overall tortoise size. That distinction matters: calling every sulcata the world’s largest tortoise overstates what the measurements show.
This arid-land specialist is shaped by the Sahel. It grazes on tough vegetation, excavates deep refuge burrows, and can live for roughly a century. The ten facts below explain its size, habitat, behavior, reproduction, longevity and conservation challenges without treating a wild animal as an easy household pet.

1. How big do Sulcata tortoises get?
Adult sulcatas are enormous by tortoise standards, but size varies with sex, age and the way an animal is measured. Males are larger than females. The IUCN/SSC Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group reported maximum straight carapace lengths of 86.0 centimetres for males and 57.8 centimetres for females in its 2020 species account; the straight carapace measurement runs along the shell rather than following its curve.

The “largest” label needs the same care. In Africa, and among living tortoises native to continental mainland, the sulcata ranks first. When island giants are included, Aldabra and Galápagos tortoises are generally larger overall, placing the sulcata third. A juvenile therefore does not grow into the largest tortoise on Earth by default; it grows into one of the largest species, with males typically reaching the greatest dimensions.
2. Why is it called a sulcata?
Sulcata is Latin for “furrow.” San Diego Zoo explains that the name refers to the pronounced grooves between the shell’s scutes, the individual plates that make up the carapace. The same animal is called the African spurred tortoise, spurred tortoise or African spur-thigh tortoise. “Spur-thigh” describes the prominent spurs on the rear legs, while “African spurred tortoise” distinguishes it from unrelated tortoises that also have shell ridges.
The shell is more than a name-bearing surface. Its domed structure protects the body, and the heavy forequarters and muscular legs let a sulcata push soil aside while digging. In males, a fork-like projection at the front of the plastron (the lower shell) is used during fights with rivals, according to the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle. The combination of furrowed scutes, rear-leg spurs and a strongly built front end gives the species a recognizable profile even before its full size is apparent.

Sulcatas occupy a broad but discontinuous belt of arid Sahelian Africa, the transition zone between the Sahara and the wetter Sudanian savanna. Sacramento Zoo describes this region as a landscape of dry grasslands and plains. The IUCN/SSC account associates the tortoises especially with seasonal or intermittent rivers and streams known as kori, while also recording use of dunes, slopes and grassier shrubland. The documented range reaches as far east as the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
A map showing only “desert” misses the ecological detail. Kori corridors can provide slightly better forage and soils suitable for excavation, and the surrounding plains supply grasses and other low vegetation. Because the range is discontinuous, populations are separated by areas that do not offer the combination of food, soil and seasonal watercourses they need.
Sahelian habitat is not uniformly barren. It shifts between open sandy ground, rocky or sloping terrain, seasonal channels and patches of grassier shrubland. Rainfall is brief and uneven, so the tortoise’s usable landscape changes through the year. A locality that looks empty during the dry season can support a flush of plants after seasonal rain, while nearby overgrazed or developed ground may no longer provide enough cover and forage.
4. How do they survive Sahelian temperature extremes?
Burrows are the sulcata’s most important climate-control technology. The IUCN/SSC account reports extensive burrows up to 15 metres long. San Diego Zoo describes dens reaching about 3 metres deep, used to escape the intense daytime heat, while the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle notes retreat during extreme heat and cold nights. The different dimensions describe different observations, not a single universal burrow design.

Inside a refuge, soil buffers the rapid temperature swings at the surface. A tortoise can spend the hottest part of the day underground and emerge when conditions are safer for grazing. San Diego Zoo also reports that abandoned tortoise burrows may be reused by other wildlife for relief from heat. That observation does not mean every active burrow is routinely shared, but it shows how digging can create shelter that benefits an entire dryland community.
A burrow also helps conserve a body’s water budget by reducing exposure during the most desiccating hours. The species’ dependence on excavated shelter explains why loss of suitable soil, road building or compacted ground can be damaging even when some vegetation remains. Surface temperature alone never tells the whole story of sulcata habitat; access to a workable refuge is part of the habitat requirement.
5. What do Sulcata tortoises eat?
In the wild, the species is mainly herbivorous. The IUCN/SSC account describes a grazer that eats grasses and other plants; San Diego Zoo lists grasses, flowers, weeds and cacti among native foods. This high-fibre diet fits an animal that spends much of its active time cropping vegetation close to the ground.
Plant eating is a strong rule, not an absolute one. The specialist account records occasional carrion or garbage feeding near settlements. Those exceptions should not be mistaken for a normal or healthy diet. San Diego Zoo’s managed animals receive chopped greens, Bermuda hay and tortoise diet pellets, a zoo husbandry regime rather than a menu that defines what free-ranging tortoises require.
Seasonal scarcity makes the broad category “plants” important. The species is adapted to a landscape where the available grasses and herbs change with rain, and cacti can contribute to the list of native foods. Near settlements, garbage may be accessible, but an opportunistic feeding record does not turn human refuse into appropriate nutrition. Wild observations and zoo menus should therefore be kept separate when discussing what a sulcata eats.
6. Why are males larger, and how do they fight?
Male-biased size is linked to competition. The IUCN/SSC account describes males as highly territorial and says larger males win sexual combats more often. San Diego Zoo records a forceful sequence: males ram and bite rivals and may try to flip them. A tortoise that is overturned can be exposed to heat and predators, so these contests are consequential rather than ceremonial pushing.
The male plastron’s front fork, noted by the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, helps in those confrontations. Size, leverage and persistence can determine access to females and territory. Females do not need to win the same combat contests, which helps explain why their adult bodies are generally smaller.

Territorial behavior also means that a single animal’s space needs cannot be inferred from the size of a juvenile. The physical contests described by the zoo profile are part of the species’ natural social and reproductive behavior, not unusual aggression caused by captivity. They help explain why adult males can be especially difficult to house safely alongside one another.

7. When do Sulcata tortoises mature and reproduce?
The IUCN/SSC account places sexual maturity at roughly 10–15 years, although development depends on conditions and individual growth. Nesting is reported from September through May. Females can produce two or three clutches in that period, with substantial variation in the number of eggs.
| Reproductive detail | Reported figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Clutches in a nesting season | Two to three | IUCN/SSC species account (2020) |
| Eggs per clutch | 14–40 | IUCN/SSC species account (2020) |
| Alternative clutch estimate | 15–30 eggs | San Diego Zoo profile |
| Incubation | About eight months | San Diego Zoo profile |
Egg temperature influences the sex ratio. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle reports that early-incubation temperatures below 28°C produce mainly males, while temperatures above 30°C produce mainly females. “Mainly” is important: those observations do not establish that every egg at a particular temperature has the same outcome, and they do not specify the sex ratio throughout the intermediate range.
The combination of multiple clutches, dozens of eggs and temperature-linked sex determination makes nesting conditions especially important. A change in soil temperature or moisture can affect more than hatching success; it can shift the balance of males and females entering the population. The available figures are ranges, not guarantees for every female or every nesting season.
8. How small are hatchlings?
Despite the size of their parents, hatchlings begin life tiny. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle reports hatchlings no longer than 4.5 centimetres and weighing about 30 grams. Those are profile measurements, not a promise that every hatchling will match them exactly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYoung tortoises must grow through years of exposure to heat, drought and predators before reaching adult dimensions. The available species accounts provide age at maturity and hatchling measurements, but not one universally applicable growth curve. It is therefore more accurate to describe growth as a long progression than to assign an invented “centimetres per year” rate.
The contrast between a 30-gram hatchling and a male that may exceed 100 kilograms also explains why juvenile appearance can mislead prospective keepers. A small animal at a shop or rescue facility represents the early stage of a very large, long-lived species, not a permanently small tortoise.

9. How long do Sulcata tortoises live?
A sulcata may live for around a century. San Diego Zoo gives an estimate of 80–100 years, and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle says around 100 years. Sacramento Zoo estimates 100 years in human care but explicitly says the lifespan in the wild is unknown.
These are potential-lifespan estimates, not a documented wild average. Disease, drought, injury, illegal collection and habitat loss can shorten life in nature. A century-long biological lifespan also means that any human responsibility for an individual can extend across generations.

The reliable point is the species’ exceptional life potential, not a precise average age for all individuals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. What threatens wild Sulcata tortoises?
The IUCN/SSC account identifies habitat loss, collection of eggs and meat, international pet trade and climate change among the pressures on wild populations. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle additionally names overgrazing, pollution, urban expansion and desertification. These drivers can interact: livestock reduce forage, development fragments the range, and changing rainfall alters both plant growth and the seasonal watercourses linked to suitable habitat.
Conservation labels differ among the profiles consulted, so a single unqualified global category would be misleading here. The consistent message is that exploitation and habitat change matter, and that removing animals or eggs from the wild has consequences for already separated populations.
Fragmentation is particularly serious for a species tied to intermittent watercourses and suitable burrowing ground. Even where tortoises remain visible, a population can lose nesting sites, forage or movement routes. International trade adds another pressure because demand can remove juveniles before they contribute to local reproduction. Climate change and desertification may then compound those losses by making food and shelter less predictable.

Why this is not an easy starter pet
Captive care requires appropriate space, temperatures, ultraviolet lighting, a high-fibre diet and access to qualified veterinary care. The animal’s eventual size and century-scale lifespan make the commitment far greater than its small juvenile appearance suggests. WWF’s responsible-pet assessment states: “Prospective pet owners should research if they can safely keep the animal for its lifetime, including housing, proper food and veterinary care, and be sure it came from a legal source and is allowed in their jurisdiction.” That is a welfare and legal warning, not an invitation to buy one.

Legal requirements vary by jurisdiction, and a responsible keeper must verify them before taking possession. Reputable, documented sources matter because collection and trade are among the pressures identified for wild populations. A suitable enclosure is not merely a box with a heat lamp: the animal eventually needs room for a very large body, stable environmental conditions, species-appropriate food and veterinary planning over decades.
Understanding the sulcata in its Sahelian setting makes the headline claim precise: it is Africa’s largest tortoise and the largest living tortoise of a continental mainland, while Aldabra and Galápagos giant tortoises rank ahead of it when all living tortoises are compared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are sulcata tortoises the largest tortoises in the world?
They are the largest living tortoises on the African mainland and the largest living continental tortoise. Aldabra and Galápagos giant tortoises are generally larger overall, so sulcatas are usually ranked third when all living tortoises are compared.
How large can a male sulcata become?
The IUCN/SSC account reports male straight carapace lengths up to 86.0 centimetres and says males may exceed 100 kilograms. San Diego Zoo gives a rounded adult length of about 76 centimetres and reports some males up to 90 kilograms; these are source-specific figures, not a typical size for every male.
Where are African spurred tortoises found?
They inhabit a broad but discontinuous Sahelian range south of the Sahara, using arid grasslands, plains, dunes, slopes, shrubland and seasonal watercourses called kori. The documented range reaches the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
What is a sulcata’s normal diet?
It is mainly herbivorous, grazing on grasses and other plants. San Diego Zoo lists flowers, weeds and cacti among native foods. The IUCN/SSC account notes occasional carrion or garbage feeding near settlements, but those are exceptions rather than a recommended diet.
How long can a sulcata live?
Profiles estimate a potential lifespan of roughly 80–100 years, with the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle giving around 100 years. Sacramento Zoo estimates 100 years in human care but says wild lifespan is unknown, so these figures are not a documented wild average.
Do sulcata tortoises make easy pets?
No. WWF says prospective owners must plan for lifetime housing, proper food, veterinary care and legal sourcing. A tortoise that can exceed large adult dimensions and live for about a century requires substantial space and long-term commitment; its small juvenile size is deceptive.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The sulcata is Africa’s largest tortoise and the largest living mainland tortoise, but Aldabra and Galápagos giants are larger overall. Its Sahelian life depends on seasonal vegetation, deep refuge burrows and access to suitable soils. Large adult size, temperature-sensitive reproduction, century-scale potential longevity and ongoing habitat and trade pressures make it a remarkable wild animal rather than an easy starter pet.
