What was the Swifty for Mayor campaign?
“Swifty” was a RYOBI spot cleaner presented as an independent candidate during Staines’s 2026 local election period. RYOBI and advertising agency McCann Birmingham used the character to make a campaign about local responsibility, rather than a conventional product pitch. The initiative ran across out-of-home advertising, social media, radio and public relations.
The campaign’s name, “Taking Care of Staines,” captured its premise: if political promises felt remote, the brand could demonstrate care through practical work in the community. RYOBI director Tom Leather said the company is based about 20 minutes from Staines and regarded residents as neighbours it wanted to help.
What did the campaign do in Staines?
A RYOBI clean squad visited community spaces, public areas and gardens, while supporting charities and community groups. The teams cleaned sites and left RYOBI tools with the organisations they visited, which could keep them without forms or strings attached, according to LBB’s account.

That work gave the campaign a tangible element beyond the joke of a cleaner running for office: local organisations received practical help and tools, while the spot cleaner became the recognisable face of the effort.
What is the Swifty for Mayor documentary?
Swifty for Mayor is a documentary directed by Ben Fogg and produced by Shaven Ape. Shot over the three-month local election period, it follows the campaign from its launch through polling day, including volunteers and local reactions. RYOBI and McCann Birmingham released a teaser trailer ahead of the feature-length film.

LBB reported that the teaser was available on RYOBI’s YouTube channels. It said the full documentary was planned to premiere in November 2026, but did not give a confirmed date or viewing platform. That month is a planned release window, not confirmation that the film has since premiered.
What prompted the campaign?
LBB described low voter engagement as part of the campaign context. Its article attributed the figure that 60% of citizens did not know who to vote for to campaign context, but did not identify a survey, sample, fieldwork dates or original data publisher. The figure should therefore be understood as a claim reported by LBB, not independently verified polling. LBB also described turnout as being at an all-time low without providing a figure or naming the underlying data.
Adam Bodfish, executive creative director at McCann Birmingham, said the team saw residents as bored with politics and looking for something new. He described Swifty as an alternative to “dirty politics,” with cameras following the campaign through polling day.
