Dogs may dread car rides because they feel nauseated, fear the vehicle, or have learned to associate travel with something unpleasant. These causes can overlap. Notice when your dog’s distress begins, keep them safely restrained, and build positive associations gradually. If they vomit, show marked anxiety, or cannot make progress, ask your veterinarian for help.
Why car rides can upset dogs
Motion can stimulate a dog’s inner ear and cause motion sickness. Signs may include nausea, excessive drooling, uneasiness, apprehension, vomiting and sometimes diarrhea. Fear can contribute, too: a dog may associate the car with a frightening experience or with a destination they dislike. In some dogs, that learned response can begin even while the car is parked. Merck Veterinary Manual describes these overlapping causes and symptoms.
The timing of the signs can offer useful clues, but it cannot diagnose the cause. Anxiety around the parked car or before the engine starts may point to fear or a learned association; drooling or vomiting after the vehicle moves may suggest motion sickness. Either pattern can have more than one explanation, so share what you observe with your veterinarian. The American Kennel Club also identifies anxiety, negative past experiences and unpleasant destinations as possible reasons dogs dislike rides.
10 ways to help your dog stay calmer
- Track when the distress starts. Note whether your dog reacts near the parked car, when the engine starts or once the car is moving. Record signs such as drooling, vomiting, whining or uneasiness. This information can guide a conversation with your veterinarian, but it is not a diagnosis.
- Ask your veterinarian about nausea. Motion sickness and fear can overlap. Your veterinarian can assess the symptoms and advise whether medical treatment is appropriate. Do not give medication without veterinary guidance.
- Start at a distance your dog can handle. If approaching the car is already upsetting, begin farther away. Let your dog remain comfortable before asking for a closer approach. The AKC’s guidance supports gradual exposure rather than forcing a frightened dog through the experience.
- Make the parked car predict good things. Reward calm, voluntary approaches and brief interactions with something your dog enjoys. Keep the experience easy enough that your dog can stay relaxed and willing to engage.
- Introduce the travel setup before driving. Let your dog get used to their crate or restraint in small, positive steps. A restraint that is unfamiliar or uncomfortable can add stress; Cornell recommends acclimating dogs to the travel setup gradually.
- Keep practice sessions short. Cornell gives 5–10 minutes as an example session length, not a required prescription. Adjust the time to your dog’s response. If they become anxious or stop engaging, end or simplify the session rather than pushing ahead.
- Increase difficulty in small steps. Progress from being near the car to sitting in it, then to a very short ride. Move on only while your dog remains relaxed. If distress returns, go back to an easier step.
- Vary where some rides end. If every trip leads to an unpleasant appointment, a few rides to enjoyable destinations may help broaden your dog’s associations with the car. Choose trips short and manageable enough for your dog.
- Make the ride secure and comfortable. Use a crash-tested harness or restraint, or a suitable travel crate. Keep the car ventilated and comfortable, and plan appropriate breaks on longer journeys. Cornell’s travel guidance recommends crash-tested restraints and gradual preparation.
- Get help if distress is severe or progress stalls. Ask your veterinarian about ongoing anxiety, suspected motion sickness, medication or a referral. A veterinary behaviorist or qualified humane trainer can help when your dog is struggling and training is difficult to advance. Cornell recommends seeking support early in that situation.
Choosing a safe way to travel
A crash-tested dog restraint or a travel crate are the options supported by Cornell’s travel guidance. Check that the setup suits your dog and vehicle, and introduce it positively before relying on it for a trip. Do not assume an ordinary walking harness is crash-tested: that claim needs reliable, model-specific evidence.

Comfort matters as well as restraint. Transport can involve stressors beyond motion, so maintain ventilation and a comfortable environment and plan breaks on longer trips. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s transport guidance addresses animal welfare and climate regulation during travel.
Use food and calming aids thoughtfully
Treats can help make stationary-car practice and gradual acclimation more positive. But if your dog gets carsick, food may not be a good fit during travel: the U.S. Army pet-behavior resource cautions that food and nausea do not mix well. Ask your veterinarian how to handle rewards if sickness is suspected.
