Taurine deficiency in cats can damage the heart and retina. It is now uncommon in cats eating complete commercial cat food formulated for them, but risk remains when a cat’s diet is unbalanced—especially with some homemade or vegetarian diets and dog food. If your cat has trouble breathing or you are concerned about its vision, contact a veterinarian; do not try to diagnose or treat a suspected deficiency with supplements on your own.
What taurine deficiency can do to a cat
Cats need taurine in their diet. Inadequate intake can cause dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease in which the heart muscle becomes enlarged and weak, and central retinal degeneration, which can threaten vision. These effects are serious, but taurine-responsive cardiomyopathy is now uncommon in cats fed commercial cat food formulated for them. Merck Veterinary Manual explains that taurine was added to commercial cat foods after its link with feline dilated cardiomyopathy was recognized (Nutritional Requirements of Small Animals, full review November 2023; Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs and Cats).

What causes taurine deficiency in cats?
The central risk is an inadequate diet, not the mere presence or absence of a particular ingredient. Cats require dietary taurine. Plant-based protein sources are devoid of it, although synthetic taurine can be added to a diet. A food’s overall nutrient profile and whether it is complete and balanced for cats matter more than assumptions based on one ingredient (Merck Veterinary Manual).

Dog food is not a suitable routine diet for cats because its taurine concentration may not be assured and it may not provide other nutrients cats require. This does not mean that every commercial cat food is deficient; taurine-responsive cardiomyopathy is now uncommon in cats fed commercial foods formulated for them (Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs and Cats; Proper Nutrition for Cats, last updated July 2025; Dog and Cat Foods, full review November 2023).

What are the symptoms of taurine deficiency in cats?
Heart-related effects
Taurine deficiency can cause dilated cardiomyopathy. If heart disease progresses to heart failure, a cat may have severe difficulty breathing because fluid has accumulated in or around the lungs. Respiratory distress can worsen rapidly, so seek prompt veterinary care rather than waiting to see whether it passes (Heart Failure in Cats).
Eye-related effects
Taurine deficiency can also cause central retinal degeneration, which may threaten vision (Disorders of the Retina, Choroid, and Optic Disk in Cats). The veterinary references cited here do not provide a deficiency-specific checklist of signs owners can use to identify retinal disease at home. A suspected change in vision needs veterinary assessment.

A veterinarian considers the cat’s diet and clinical condition and decides whether testing is appropriate. The veterinary references cited here do not establish one universal taurine threshold or a single test-interpretation rule for every clinical situation. Share what your cat eats—including treats, supplements, homemade ingredients, or dog food—and describe any changes in breathing, activity, or vision. How is taurine deficiency treated?
Veterinary references support taurine supplementation for cats with documented deficiency and taurine-responsive cardiomyopathy. The veterinarian should direct whether to supplement and specify the amount and duration; there is no universal regimen established here that is appropriate for every cat or cause. If the cat has heart failure, taurine is not a substitute for urgent assessment or other prescribed treatment. Follow the veterinarian’s plan for the heart disease as well as any supplementation (Heart Failure in Dogs and Cats; Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs and Cats).

How to reduce the risk
- Choose a complete and balanced food formulated for cats and appropriate to your cat’s life stage (Proper Nutrition for Cats).
- Do not feed dog food as your cat’s routine diet.
- If you want to feed homemade food, ask a veterinarian—ideally a veterinary nutritionist—to formulate the diet rather than improvising a recipe from a few ingredients.
- Discuss diet changes and supplements with your cat’s veterinarian, particularly if your cat has a health condition or is already eating a noncommercial diet.
