Toilet train a puppy or dog by taking them to one consistent toilet area on a predictable schedule, supervising them indoors, and rewarding them immediately when they finish in the right place. Puppies need more frequent chances than adult dogs, but every dog’s routine depends on age, experience, and health—there is no reliable one-size-fits-all timeline.
Choose where you want your dog to toilet
Decide whether the long-term goal is toileting outdoors or in a designated indoor spot. Keeping the location consistent helps your dog learn what you expect.

| Option | May suit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor routine | Households able to provide regular trips and outdoor access. | Young puppies need frequent opportunities, so plan for supervision and reliable access. |
| Indoor pads or dog potty | Households where outdoor trips are difficult because of access, mobility, weather, or similar constraints. | Use one consistent location. Offering both indoor and outdoor options can make an eventual outdoor-only transition less clear. |
| Crate, pen, or gated area | Short periods when you cannot directly supervise, provided your dog is comfortable in the space. | Management does not replace toilet breaks. Choose a crate only if it is appropriately sized and introduced positively. |
Indoor toileting is an option, not a requirement. For guidance on setting up an indoor toilet, see the AKC guide to indoor potty training for puppies.

Build a predictable toilet routine
Take your dog to the chosen area regularly. For a puppy, offer a trip after waking, eating, drinking, and playing, as well as when you notice signs they may need to go. Puppies generally need more frequent opportunities than adult dogs, but a fixed bladder-holding formula does not apply to every dog. Adult and newly adopted dogs may also need to learn the household routine from the beginning.

- Go to the same area. Use a leash and a quiet, consistent spot when practical so the outing stays focused.
- Wait with your dog. Give them time to sniff and eliminate rather than leaving them alone to work it out.
- Reward right away. As soon as your dog finishes in the intended place, praise them or offer a small treat or toy. Have the reward ready before the trip; a reward given later may not clearly connect to the toileting.
- If nothing happens, keep supervising. Try again soon, and do not give your dog unrestricted access to the house immediately after an unsuccessful trip.
- Increase freedom gradually. Expand access to more rooms as your dog succeeds reliably, rather than assuming they understand the whole home at once.
Watch for individual signals such as sniffing, circling, pacing, whining, or leaving the room. Signs differ from dog to dog, so learn your own dog’s pattern and take them to the chosen area promptly when you notice it.
Use supervision and confinement as management—not punishment
Close supervision helps you notice when your dog needs to go and prevents unsupervised accidents. A crate can help for short periods if your dog is comfortable there, but it is optional and must not be used to make a dog wait longer than they can comfortably manage. Take your dog to the toilet area promptly after letting them out.

A crate should allow your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. A divider can adjust a larger crate for a growing puppy. If a crate is unsuitable, use direct supervision, a pen, or a gated smaller area instead. Never use confinement as a consequence for an accident.
Respond to accidents calmly
If you catch your dog starting to eliminate indoors, interrupt calmly without frightening them, then take them to the intended area. If they finish there, reward them. Clean the accident spot thoroughly, including the odor, and review whether the schedule or supervision needs adjusting.

If you discover a mess after the fact, clean it without scolding or taking your dog to it. Punishment after an accident does not teach the intended location and may cause a dog to hide when eliminating. The AVSAB housetraining guidance advises against this practice; its author, Megan Maxwell, explains that it is not considered safe or effective for housetraining.
Adapt the plan for puppies, adult dogs, and setbacks
Puppies
Immature bladder control means puppies need frequent chances to toilet. Build trips around waking, meals, drinking, and play, and stay close enough indoors to respond to signals. How long training takes varies with age, prior experience, consistency, and method; no single completion age applies to every puppy.

Adult or newly adopted dogs
An adult dog may never have learned to toilet outdoors, may have a preference for a different surface, or may be adjusting to a new home. Start with regular trips and immediate rewards for the location you want, rather than assuming the dog already understands your household’s rule. The AKC guide to housetraining an adult dog also covers gradual access and accident handling.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRepeated accidents or a sudden change
When accidents continue despite consistent routine and supervision, or house soiling begins suddenly, contact a veterinarian to check for health concerns. If medical issues are addressed or ruled out and the difficulty persists, consider individualized help from a qualified, reward-based trainer or behavior professional. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior supports reward-based methods in its position statement on humane dog training.

Review the routine when training stalls
- Is the chosen toilet location clear and consistent?
- Are trips frequent enough for this dog, especially after waking, meals, drinking, and play?
- Are you supervising closely enough to notice signals and respond promptly?
- Are rewards delivered immediately after your dog finishes in the right place?
- After an unsuccessful trip, are you continuing supervision and trying again soon?
- Are accident areas being cleaned thoroughly, including odor?
- Could a health concern explain persistent or sudden house soiling?
