To teach your dog a “bed” command, first reward them for stepping onto a chosen bed or mat, then teach them to settle and stay there until you give a release cue. Add the word “bed” only after your dog understands the action, and gradually build duration, distance, and distractions one at a time.
Choose a bed or mat and prepare rewards
Pick one surface to start: your dog’s bed, a mat, or another clearly defined area. A bed your dog already enjoys may make a natural starting point; a mat is easier to move when you want to practice in another room or location. RSPCA Queensland recommends a non-slip mat or bed for mat training. RSPCA Queensland’s mat-training fact sheet explains the setup.

Have small training treats ready. A clicker is optional: you can also use a consistent spoken marker, such as “yes,” to mark the behavior you are about to reward. Deliver the reward on the bed or mat so being on that surface predicts something good.
Teach your dog to go onto the surface
- Reward interest. Put the bed or mat in a quiet area. Mark and reward your dog for looking at it or moving toward it.
- Reward stepping on. Gradually reward closer approaches until your dog puts all four paws on the surface. You can shape the behavior by rewarding small steps or lure your dog onto it with a treat.
- Use a release cue. Say a consistent word such as “free,” “release,” or “okay,” then encourage your dog off the surface. This helps make clear that the exercise ends when you release them.
- Reward a return. Invite your dog back and reward them on the surface. Repeat until they are comfortable going onto it.
The American Kennel Club recommends teaching the behavior before adding the verbal cue, and rewarding the dog on the bed. Its guide to teaching “go to place” describes shaping or luring the dog onto a mat and building the exercise from there.

Add a settled position and a clear end
Once your dog readily gets onto the surface, encourage the position you want them to hold, such as a sit or down. Mark and reward the position while your dog remains on the bed or mat. If they get off before you release them, calmly make the next repetition easier rather than scolding or forcing them back.
Keep rewarding while your dog stays settled. Use your release cue to end each repetition, then invite them to return. The cue “bed” should mean go to the designated surface and settle there; the release cue tells your dog when they may leave.

Build duration, distance, and distractions gradually
Begin with a brief settle, then increase how long your dog stays in small increments. After they can manage that, practice moving a little farther away. Add mild distractions only when the current version is going well. Change one challenge at a time: do not simultaneously ask for a longer stay, more distance, and a busier environment.
- Duration: Extend the time between rewards in small steps, and release your dog before they are likely to leave.
- Distance: Take a small step away, return to reward your dog on the surface, and gradually increase the distance.
- Distractions: Start with minor activity nearby, then build toward more distracting settings as your dog succeeds.
If your dog leaves repeatedly or struggles to settle, return to an easier step: shorten the time, move closer, or reduce distractions. Reward success at that level before making the exercise harder. The AKC’s bed-training guide also advises increasing duration or distance in small increments and stepping back when the dog struggles.
Add the “bed” cue, then practice in other places
When your dog is reliably moving onto the surface and settling in your training setup, say “bed” just before they begin the behavior. Reward them on the surface. Practice the cue in short repetitions, continuing to use your release word to end each stay.

Use the bed or mat for reward-based practice, not as a punishment station. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior says its current authoritative expression of its position is the 2021 Humane Dog Training statement, which “clearly recommends that only reward-based training methods be used for all aspects of dog training and behavior modification.” See the AVSAB position statements and handouts.
