Cat hairballs are usually swallowed fur that a cat later vomits, but repeated retching or vomiting can signal a blockage or another illness—not just a hairball. Brush your cat regularly to reduce loose fur, and contact a veterinarian promptly if symptoms repeat, your cat seems unwell, or food and water will not stay down.
What a hairball is—and when it becomes dangerous
Cats swallow loose hair as they groom. Hair is indigestible, and some may collect in the stomach as a compact mass called a trichobezoar. A cat may vomit up a hairball, but a mass can also irritate the stomach or obstruct the digestive tract. An obstruction may need veterinary treatment and sometimes surgery, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA Animal Hospitals.

Long-haired cats are at greater risk. Cornell also notes increased risk in older cats that groom extensively and during shedding seasons. There is no single normal frequency established by these sources for how often a cat should bring up a hairball. Recurrent episodes are worth discussing with a veterinarian rather than assuming they are harmless.

Gagging, hacking, retching, and vomiting do not prove that a hairball is the cause. Asthma and other illnesses can look similar, and an obstructing hairball may not appear in vomit. Cornell’s guidance on hairballs and vomiting cautions that these signs can have causes beyond hairballs.

- Seek prompt veterinary assessment for repeated retching or vomiting, especially repeated unproductive retching; lethargy; poor appetite or refusing food; abdominal pain; or inability to keep food or water down.
- Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat is vomiting and has no bowel movements. Vomiting, abdominal pain, and lack of bowel movements can occur with an obstruction, according to VCA.
- Do not wait for visible hair in vomit if your cat has these symptoms. An obstruction may not produce a visible hairball.
Cornell quotes Richard Goldstein, DVM, an associate professor of small animal medicine at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, advising that a cat that is lethargic, refuses to eat for more than a day or two, or has repeated unproductive retching or true vomiting should be examined without delay. Do not wait that long if your cat’s condition is worsening or you are concerned; call a veterinarian for guidance.
How to reduce hairballs
Brush or comb loose fur away
Regular brushing or combing is the most straightforward preventive step in the veterinary sources. Removing loose fur means your cat has less to swallow while grooming. Long-haired cats and cats shedding seasonally may need particularly frequent grooming; Cornell recommends daily brushing and combing. Choose a brush or comb your cat tolerates and that suits the coat, and stop if grooming causes distress or discomfort.

Ask about recurrent episodes
Frequent hairballs can be associated with skin problems, over-grooming, stress, pain, or gastrointestinal disease. A veterinarian can assess whether one of these factors is contributing and advise on appropriate treatment.
Discuss diet or hairball products with a veterinarian
Some commercial diets and treats are formulated for hairball control. Ask your veterinarian whether a hairball-specific diet is appropriate for your cat. Discuss supplements, medicines, lubricants, and gels with a veterinarian before using them; they are not a home treatment for a suspected obstruction.

Why home laxatives are not a safe shortcut
Do not give a laxative or mineral oil on your own to try to clear a hairball. Cornell specifically advises that owners never give a laxative without veterinary approval and supervision. If your cat is repeatedly retching, vomiting, lethargic, not eating, in pain, or unable to keep water down, seek veterinary care rather than trying a home remedy.
