Once your dog begins responding to the cue, reward barking only when you ask for it. Teach a separate “quiet” cue as well, so the trick has a clear stop signal.
What you need before you start
- Choose one short cue, such as “speak” or “talk,” and use the same word each time.
- Have a reward ready before practice begins. Small, soft treats are easy to deliver promptly; a toy or praise may work better for some dogs.
- Pick a safe, relatively quiet place and keep practice short. Be considerate of neighbors.
- Decide on a marker: a clicker or a consistent word such as “yes.” Either can signal the exact behavior you will reward.
The American Kennel Club describes capturing a naturally offered bark and also suggests using a familiar, non-scary situation that tends to prompt one, such as an exciting play moment. These are practical options, not methods shown to outperform one another. AKC’s speak-training guide and its simple-trick guidance explain the cue-and-reward approach.

How to teach “speak” step by step
- Wait for a bark. Give your dog a chance to bark naturally, or use a familiar activity that commonly brings out a bark without frightening or upsetting them.
- Pair the bark with the cue. As the bark happens, say “speak,” then mark the moment with your clicker or marker word.
- Reward immediately. Deliver the treat, toy, or other chosen reward right after the marker.
- Repeat the same sequence. Keep the cue, marker, and reward consistent. A clicker is optional; a spoken marker can serve the same practical purpose.
- Wait for the cue response. As your dog starts to associate “speak” with barking, give the cue and reward a bark that follows it. Do not reward barking outside the requested exercise during training.
Capture one bark at a time rather than encouraging a string of barks. The goal is a bark that begins in response to your cue, not barking that continues in the hope of earning a reward.

Build “quiet” by rewarding the instant your dog stops barking. At first, mark and reward even a brief pause; then gradually wait for a little longer silence before marking and rewarding. VCA describes pairing a predictable “speak” exercise with a quiet cue just before the bark is expected to subside, then rewarding silence. Its article, “Barking in Dogs,” calls training a dog to be quiet on command an aid for controlling undesirable barking.

Keep your voice calm. Yelling can add more noise or anxiety rather than helping your dog understand what you want. Practice the two cues as distinct requests: bark when asked, then stop when asked.
What if your dog barks too much?
“Speak” is a trick, not a solution to every barking problem. Dogs may bark for attention, out of fear or excitement, from frustration or boredom, or in response to what they perceive as a territorial threat. If barking is frequent, intense, escalating, or disruptive, consider what is prompting it and address that cause and the surrounding environment—not just the sound. The ASPCA’s barking guidance and the AKC’s guide to managing excessive barking discuss possible motivations and management. If the barking is fear-based or continues to cause problems despite consistent work, seek help from a qualified trainer or behavior professional.
