Yes—but the figure of more than 7,000 cattle killed refers to Hemphill County alone, not the full 2024 Texas Panhandle wildfire complex. Broader estimates put cattle losses across the fires at approximately 15,000, according to the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, or more than 12,000 in a later Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service summary.
Why are there different cattle-death estimates?
The figures describe different scopes and reporting stages, so they should not be treated as competing counts of the same area at the same time.
| Estimate | What it covers | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|
| More than 7,000 cows out of 23,000 in the county | Hemphill County, one part of the affected region | Texas A&M AgriLife county agent Andy Holloway, cited in a 2024 Texas House hearing report |
| Approximately 15,000 cattle lost | The wildfires across the region | Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, as reported in the 2024 Texas House committee report |
| More than 12,000 cattle deaths | The 2024 Texas Panhandle wildfires | Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, January 2025 preparedness bulletin |
The 7,000-plus figure is therefore a county-level count, while the other two are broader estimates. Reporting also evolved over time; the numbers may reflect different stages of accounting for animal losses, including severely injured cattle that might later need to be euthanized.
What happened in the Texas Panhandle fires?
The fire complex began in late February 2024 and included the Smokehouse Creek, Grape Vine Creek, Windy Deuce, 2277 and Reamer Creek fires. Together, the fires burned about 1.2 million acres. Texas A&M AgriLife described the event as the largest and most costly wildfire event in Texas history. Smokehouse Creek and Windy Deuce were declared 100% contained on March 16, 2024.

How the fire started and spread
A Texas House investigation found that a decayed utility pole broke and power lines fell onto dry fuels. The Texas Comptroller likewise summarized the fire’s ignition as power lines from a decayed, broken pole. Dry grass, low humidity and strong winds helped the flames spread rapidly.
How extensive was the damage to ranches?
Cattle deaths were only one part of the toll. The fires damaged or destroyed homes and businesses, wells and pumps, fencing, forage and wildlife habitat. The Texas House report said some pastures might not be suitable for grazing for three to five years.

What did the fires mean for Panhandle ranchers?
Ranchers faced the immediate loss of livestock and the practical work of securing surviving animals, restoring water access and replacing fences. The House report said fencing losses generally were not insured unless an owner had bought a special endorsement. It also cited replacement fencing costs of up to $25,000 per mile under post-fire demand conditions.
