Texas’s “Flesh-Eating Fly” Threat Reached the State: What Pet Owners Need to Know

The “flesh-eating fly” warning began as a 2025 Texas preparedness story, but USDA confirmed New World screwworm in two Zavala County calves in June 2026. Here is what pet owners should know about symptoms, human risk, reporting, and the sterile-fly response.

Texas is no longer merely preparing for an “imminent” flesh-eating fly threat. The original warning described preparations announced on August 8, 2025. USDA later confirmed New World screwworm in two calves in Zavala County on June 3 and June 5, 2026. The current story is an active animal-health response—not a statewide Texas infestation, a human outbreak, or person-to-person spread.

For pet owners, any rapidly worsening, painful, foul-smelling wound or wound containing visible larvae warrants prompt veterinary care. Here is what the fly is, how the situation developed, what officials are doing, and how to respond safely.

The headline’s underlying threat was real, but “appears imminent” is now outdated. The warning referred to Texas preparations announced on August 8, 2025. On June 3 and June 5, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed New World screwworm in two calves in Zavala County, Texas. As of the latest information summarized here, dated August 13, 2026, the state is managing confirmed animal detections through an active federal and state response—not a statewide human outbreak or proof that every Texas county is infested.

For pet owners, the practical message is straightforward: dogs, cats, horses, livestock, wildlife, and people can be affected if a fly lays eggs in an open wound or body opening. A rapidly worsening, painful, foul-smelling wound or visible larvae needs prompt veterinary or medical attention. Do not wait for a home diagnosis.

What New World screwworm is—and what it is not

New World screwworm is a fly species, Cochliomyia hominivorax. The damaging stage is not the adult fly but its larvae, commonly called maggots. An adult female can lay eggs in an open wound, around a body opening, or in another vulnerable area of a warm-blooded animal. After hatching, the larvae burrow into and consume living tissue.

That distinction matters. Many fly larvae feed on decaying organic material. New World screwworm larvae attack living tissue, so an initially small wound can become increasingly severe. The wound may enlarge, bleed, develop a foul odor, and contain larvae that are visible or moving. Secondary bacterial infection can add fever, chills, lethargy, or other signs of serious illness.

The phrase “flesh-eating flies” is therefore a sensational shorthand, not the name of a separate class of monster insects. It should not be used to describe every maggot found on an animal. Other fly larvae can look similar, and identifying the species from a casual photograph is unreliable. Official confirmation requires appropriate veterinary or animal-health testing.

How the Texas situation changed

Date What happened
1966 USDA says New World screwworm was eradicated from the United States using sterile insect technique.
August 8, 2025 The Texas Department of Agriculture announced preparedness and control measures, including a state-developed attractant called TDA Swormlure.
June 3, 2026 USDA confirmed the pest in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County. Larvae were found around the calf’s umbilical area.
June 5, 2026 A second case was confirmed in a one-month-old calf approximately 5.6 miles from the first detection.
July–August 2026 Federal and state agencies continued surveillance, case tracking, sterile-fly releases, producer and veterinary education, and research into expanded production and sterilization methods.

The June detections are why the original “imminent invasion” framing needs correction. Texas was preparing for a possible northward movement in 2025; the pest was later confirmed in Texas animals in 2026. That does not establish a statewide infestation. Case totals, active or inactive case classifications, and any active infested zones can change, so readers should rely on the current USDA and Texas animal-health dashboards rather than an old number repeated in an article.

What is the risk to dogs, cats, horses, and other animals?

Any warm-blooded animal with an exposed wound or vulnerable body opening can potentially be infested. The main agricultural concern is cattle because of the size and importance of Texas’s livestock industry, but the biological risk is not limited to cattle. Pets, horses, wildlife, birds, and other mammals may also be susceptible.

Risk is not the same as certainty. A Texas pet is not automatically infested because it spends time outdoors, and finding ordinary maggots in a wound does not prove that the larvae are New World screwworm. The correct response is to treat any suspicious wound as urgent and have a veterinarian determine what is present.

Signs that should trigger a veterinary call

  • A wound that becomes larger, deeper, or more painful instead of healing.
  • Visible larvae or larvae that appear to be moving in the wound.
  • A foul odor, bleeding, discharge, or damaged tissue.
  • A wound around the umbilicus of a newborn animal or around another body opening.
  • Marked lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, or other signs of systemic illness.

Do not pour household insecticide, engine oil, disinfectant, essential oils, or another improvised chemical into an animal’s wound. Products that are safe for one species may be dangerous to another, and killing visible larvae without removing damaged tissue or treating infection does not solve the underlying problem.

What pet owners should do

  1. Inspect the animal carefully. Check known cuts, bites, surgical sites, skin folds, and other wounds, especially after outdoor activity or contact with wildlife. Use good lighting, but do not probe deeply into a lesion.
  2. Call a veterinarian promptly. Tell the clinic where the animal has been, when the wound appeared, whether it is worsening, and whether you saw larvae, bleeding, or an odor.
  3. Follow instructions about transport. If the animal needs to be seen, keep it from licking or scratching the wound and follow the clinic’s directions. Do not transport a potentially affected animal across county or state lines unless officials or a veterinarian advise you to do so.
  4. Report a credible suspicion. A veterinarian, state animal-health authority, or local public-health authority can explain the appropriate reporting route and specimen-handling procedure. Do not mail or discard suspected larvae before asking what officials need.
  5. Keep records. Note the animal’s location, travel history, wound location, date of discovery, and any treatment already given. These details can help veterinary and animal-health investigators.

What people should know about the human-health risk

CDC guidance describes the risk to people in the United States as low and localized while recognizing that human infestations can occur. The exposure pathway is a fly depositing eggs in an open wound or body opening. New World screwworm is not spread from person to person in the way a respiratory virus is.

People should seek medical care promptly for a painful wound that worsens quickly, develops a foul odor, bleeds, or contains visible or moving larvae—particularly after exposure in an affected area. Fever or chills may indicate a secondary bacterial infection. Keep wounds clean and covered, use ordinary measures to reduce fly exposure where public-health officials advise them, and do not delay care while trying to treat or identify larvae at home.

Anyone who suspects a human case should contact a healthcare professional and report the concern to the appropriate local or state public-health authority. The fact that human cases are possible does not mean Texas is experiencing a human outbreak; the confirmed Texas detections described in the current official information were in calves.

How officials are responding

Surveillance and early reporting

Officials are using targeted traps and synthetic lures, animal examinations, laboratory testing, case reporting, and movement controls. The purpose of surveillance traps is early detection and population monitoring—not to lure flies toward pets, herds, or neighborhoods.

The wider response includes drone flights, trail cameras, field inspections, producer and veterinary training, and reporting resources for livestock owners, wildlife professionals, pet owners, and the public. A public case dashboard distinguishes individual animal cases from their status and from active infested zones. Those categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

Sterile insect technique

The central eradication tool is sterile insect technique. Large numbers of male screwworm flies are produced, sterilized, and released. The sterile males compete with fertile males for mates; when reproduction is disrupted over a sufficiently large area, the population can be driven down.

This is not a household pest-control method and does not mean residents should release insects or set up unofficial lures. It is a coordinated population-control program carried out by agricultural authorities. USDA credits sterile insect technique with helping eliminate New World screwworm from the United States in 1966 and is expanding production and dispersal capacity for the present threat.

USDA’s current response has included the NovoFly male-only strain as well as research into new production and sterilization technologies. These measures are intended to increase the number of sterile males available for release and improve the speed and reach of the response.

Texas-specific measures

In August 2025, Texas Agriculture announced TDA Swormlure, a synthetic attractant associated with trapping and monitoring. The announcement also discussed insecticide bait, an ivermectin feed additive, and a cattle vaccine that was still in development.

Those initiatives should be understood in context. They are components of a developing agricultural response, not universally proven consumer treatments and not replacements for veterinary care or official surveillance. Pet owners should not give ivermectin or another livestock medication to an animal unless a veterinarian prescribes it for that specific animal, species, dose, and condition.

Why the response is being treated so seriously

New World screwworm can cause severe suffering because its larvae consume living tissue. In livestock, untreated infestations can worsen rapidly, affect animal welfare, reduce productivity, and create substantial economic losses. Texas’s cattle industry makes early detection particularly important, but the same principle applies to pets: a wound that appears minor should not be ignored if it changes quickly.

The word “war” in the original headline is rhetorical. The actual campaign consists of surveillance, testing, reporting, movement management, veterinary intervention, public education, and sterile-fly releases coordinated by federal, state, agricultural, wildlife, and public-health agencies.

What not to assume

  • Do not assume every Texas county is affected. Confirmed animal cases do not automatically equal statewide infestation.
  • Do not assume every maggot is screwworm. Species confirmation requires appropriate testing.
  • Do not assume a pet with an outdoor lifestyle is infected. Exposure creates a possibility, not a diagnosis.
  • Do not assume the issue spreads between pets or people. The relevant route is a fly laying eggs in a wound or body opening.
  • Do not treat generic fly spray or a household fly trap as an official control program. Agency surveillance uses specialized lures, traps, testing, movement measures, and sterile-fly releases.
  • Do not give animals unprescribed ivermectin, insecticides, or other livestock products. Species, formulation, dose, and safety vary.

How to follow the situation responsibly

Because case status and infested-zone designations can change, check the latest USDA and Texas animal-health information immediately before making travel, livestock-movement, or treatment decisions. A news story should not be used as a substitute for a current movement order or veterinary instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can New World screwworm infest dogs or cats?

Yes. New World screwworm can infest warm-blooded animals, including dogs and cats, when a fly lays eggs in an open wound or body opening. A pet is not automatically infected because it spends time outdoors, but a rapidly worsening, painful, foul-smelling wound or visible larvae needs prompt veterinary attention.

Can screwworm spread directly from one pet to another?

No. The relevant exposure is a fly laying eggs in a wound or body opening. It is not considered a person-to-person or pet-to-pet infection. However, multiple animals in the same area could be exposed to the same flies.

How can I tell whether maggots are New World screwworm?

Not reliably. New World screwworm larvae can resemble other fly larvae, and a photograph is not enough for confirmation. A veterinarian or animal-health authority can arrange the appropriate examination and testing.

Is all of Texas infested with screwworm?

No. The confirmed cases summarized here were calves in Zavala County, and they do not establish that every Texas county is infested. Active zones and case classifications can change, so use the current USDA and Texas animal-health dashboards for geographic information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my animal has a suspicious wound?

Call a veterinarian immediately, avoid applying unprescribed insecticides or household chemicals, and follow instructions about wound care, transport, and reporting. Also record where the animal has been and when the wound appeared. Do not attempt to identify or mail larvae without professional guidance.

Can a livestock wound spray treat screwworm?

No. A wound-care spray may help with supportive wound management when a veterinarian approves it, but it does not identify, kill, or remove screwworm larvae and is not a substitute for veterinary treatment or official reporting.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: New World screwworm is no longer merely an anticipated Texas threat: USDA confirmed it in two calves in Zavala County in June 2026. The situation is an active animal-health response, not evidence of a statewide infestation or human outbreak. Inspect pets and livestock for worsening, foul-smelling wounds or visible larvae, seek veterinary or medical care quickly, and report credible concerns through official channels.
