Thai Cat Breeds: 9 Notable Types, Their Traits and History

A guide to nine notable cat breeds and names associated with Thailand, with clear distinctions between government recognition, registry terminology and historical ties.

There is no verified ranking showing which nine cat breeds from Thailand are the most popular. The available government and registry sources identify several Thai-origin breeds and describe their histories and traits, but they do not provide popularity counts or a comparable nine-breed list. This guide is therefore an editorial selection of nine notable Thai-associated breed names and types, not a popularity ranking. Thailand’s Public Relations Department says five native breeds were approved as national emblems in the pet category: Suphalak, Korat, Wichien Maat, Kornja and Khao Manee. That government designation is distinct from recognition by any cat registry.

Which cat breeds are associated with Thailand?

The strongest documented connections in the sources include the Thai, Korat, Khao Manee, Siamese, Suphalak and Kornja. To make a nine-item guide without inventing a ranking or claiming that every name represents a universally recognized registry breed, the selections below distinguish formal registry names from Thai names, historical breeds and source-specific naming.

For the government’s national-emblem announcement, the five names are Suphalak, Korat, Wichien Maat, Kornja and Khao Manee. The announcement does not rank them. Registry descriptions offer a separate kind of evidence: they explain how a particular association names or classifies a breed, rather than measuring how common it is.

Nine notable Thai-associated cat breeds and names

1. Thai (Wichienmaat)

TICA uses Thai as the official breed name and says the cat is known in Thailand as the Wichienmaat. It describes the Thai as a natural, moderately built pointed cat. TICA distinguishes this moderate type from the increasingly stylized type favored in Western Siamese breeding. “Old-Style Siamese” is another name used for the Thai, while “applehead” is colloquial rather than an official breed name, according to TICA. TICA’s Thai profile explains the registry’s terminology and distinction.

2. Siamese

The Siamese has a documented historical connection to Thailand, formerly known as Siam. CFA says Siamese cats appear in Thai cat poems associated with the Ayutthaya period (1350–1767). It also reports that a Siamese named Siam was given to U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes by the American consul in Bangkok in 1878, and that Siamese was among the breeds recognized when CFA was founded in 1906. These are historical milestones, not evidence of present-day popularity. See CFA’s Siamese profile.

3. Korat (Si-Sawat)

TICA identifies the Korat as a Thai-origin breed, also known in Thailand as Si-Sawat. Its profile describes a short gunmetal-blue coat with a silvery sheen and a heart-shaped head. TICA associates the cat with good fortune; CFA also describes the Korat as a Thai good-luck cat and calls it rare, including in Thailand. Those cultural and rarity descriptions are attributed to the registries, not based on a published count of cats. TICA’s Korat profile provides its breed description.

4. Khao Manee (Khaomanee)

CFA says the Khao Manee is referenced as a good-luck cat in the Thai book of cat poems, the Tamra Maeo, associated with the Ayutthaya period (1350–1767). CFA reports that it accepted the breed for registration in 2018 and lists it in the Provisional class on its breed profile. These terms describe CFA’s registry; another organization may use a different classification. TICA uses the spelling Khaomanee and also refers to the Tamra Maew. See CFA’s Khao Manee profile and TICA’s Khaomanee profile.

5. Suphalak

Suphalak is one of the five native breeds named in the Thai government announcement about national emblems. TICA’s Khaomanee profile discusses “Burmese (Suphalak)” among Thai-origin breeds. Because the government and TICA use the name in different contexts, this guide preserves each source’s terminology rather than treating Suphalak and Burmese as universally interchangeable or identically classified by all registries.

6. Kornja

Kornja is another of the five names in the Thai government’s national-emblem announcement. The registry profiles in the sources used here do not provide a comparable breed description or status for Kornja, so its government designation should not be mistaken for a specific classification by an international registry.

7. Wichien Maat

Wichien Maat appears in the Thai government’s list of five native breeds. TICA says the Thai breed is known in Thailand as the Wichienmaat. The spellings and context differ: the government names a native breed Wichien Maat, while TICA gives Wichienmaat as the Thai name for its registered Thai breed. The sources do not establish that every use of the names is interchangeable across all registries.

8. Burmese (Suphalak in TICA’s discussion)

TICA’s Khaomanee profile refers to Burmese (Suphalak) when discussing Thai-origin breeds. That is a source-specific naming context, not proof that all cat registries or Thai sources treat “Burmese” and “Suphalak” as identical names. For this reason, the name is included as a documented association rather than presented as a universally standardized separate breed.

9. Old-Style Siamese

TICA says the Thai is known elsewhere as the “Old-Style Siamese.” This label is useful when distinguishing the moderate Thai type from the more stylized modern Siamese type described by TICA, but it is not a separate official breed name in TICA. A cat described informally as old-style or applehead Siamese is not necessarily registered as a Thai.

How to read the names and recognition claims

  • Government designation: Thailand’s Public Relations Department names five native breeds approved as national emblems in the pet category: Suphalak, Korat, Wichien Maat, Kornja and Khao Manee.
  • Registry breed names and status: TICA calls its breed Thai and describes its Thai name as Wichienmaat. CFA’s stated Khao Manee registration acceptance and Provisional class are specific to CFA.
  • Historical or alternate names: Siamese and Old-Style Siamese describe a historical breed connection or type distinction; they do not establish a popularity ranking. Suphalak and Burmese appear together in TICA’s particular discussion, but that usage should not be generalized to every authority.

Different authorities answer different questions. A government announcement can identify breeds as national symbols; a registry can define a breed name or show classification; a historical source can document a long association. None of those, on its own, shows which cats are most popular today.

Are these really Thailand’s nine most popular cat breeds?

No verified nine-breed popularity ranking is established by the cited government and registry sources. They do not define “popular,” give counts by country or year, or compare nine breeds using the same measure. The nine entries above are therefore a transparent editorial selection of notable Thai-associated names and types, not a claim about ownership numbers, registrations, or rank.
