Demon cats are real as figures in folklore, ghost stories, religious traditions, and art—but documentation of a legend or image is not proof that a paranormal event occurred. The meaning of cats varies widely across cultures, so there is no single, universal “demon cat” tradition.
Is the Demon Cat of Washington, D.C., real?
Washington’s so-called Demon Cat is a documented ghost legend, not a verified apparition. The White House Historical Association traces its first recorded appearance to the U.S. Capitol in 1862, when the building’s basement was used as a bakery during the Civil War. An 1898 Washington Post account described a housecat that grew to the size of an elephant. Those records show that people told and reported the story; they do not establish that a giant supernatural cat appeared.

The legend is most often tied to the Capitol basement, though some versions place the cat at the White House and treat it as an omen before tragedies. The Association says it could not find a firsthand source confirming White House sightings. Its article also cites a 1935 account, but the existence of written reports should not be confused with independent confirmation of the ghost. The White House Historical Association’s account of the Demon Cat lays out the documented versions and their limits.
How the Capitol story may have developed
Cats roamed Capitol basement passageways and served as mousers, providing a real-life setting for stories about a cat in the building. Public historian Steve Livengood has suggested that an exhausted or intoxicated night guard, perhaps lying down, might have misjudged a cat’s apparent size. The Association also discusses oral storytelling and President Calvin Coolidge’s wandering cat Tige as possible influences on the legend’s persistence or relocation. These are hypotheses, not established explanations of how the story began.

Why do some traditions connect cats with demons?
Cat symbolism is culturally specific rather than universal. In its account of mythology and folklore, Encyclopaedia Iranica describes Zoroastrian stories in which the cat is associated with the Evil Spirit: one account says the Evil Spirit created it, while another gives it origins in a human-demon union. The same reference describes Islamic traditions with more favorable views of cats, as well as folklore in which cats may be helpful or harmful jinn. In one regional belief it notes, even a black cat can be helpful.
That contrast matters: a cat associated with a demon in one religious or folkloric account does not represent how every culture understands cats. Stories may assign cats divine, helpful, harmful, or ghostly roles, and those roles can differ even within a broad religious tradition.

What do black cats have to do with witches or the devil?
The association between black cats and the devil belongs to a particular strand of European history, not to an age-old global belief. The Natural History Museum’s overview of black-cat beliefs traces European rumors linking the devil to the form of a black cat to the 1200s. The museum rejects the idea that black cats are inherently unlucky; a historical superstition is not evidence about a cat’s character or what will happen to its owner.

What do demon cats look like in art and religious imagery?
Museum objects document how artists and religious traditions have represented feline figures; they establish the existence and context of those images, not supernatural events.
An Egyptian figure connected with Bastet
The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogs a human-headed cat figure from Egypt’s Third Intermediate Period–Late Period. Its collection description says the figure alludes to Bastet and evokes “The Return of the Faraway Goddess,” a story in which the feline or leonine Bastet leaves Egypt for Nubia and is lured back by Thoth. This is an example of feline sacred imagery, not evidence that cats were universally considered demonic. See the Met’s record for the human-headed cat.

A Japanese cat-demon ghost story
The Met also catalogs Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s woodblock diptych Scene from a Ghost Story: The Okazaki Cat Demon, dated circa 1850 and assigned to Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868). Across these examples, the evidence establishes that people told stories, held beliefs, and made images involving supernatural cats. It does not verify that a demon cat or ghostly feline exists. And because cats can appear as demons, jinn, divine figures, or ordinary animals depending on the tradition, “demon cat” is best understood as a label for different stories—not one creature with a single shared history.
