The southern elephant seal is the world’s largest seal. Typical adult males measure 4–5 metres and weigh about 3,600 kilograms, according to New Zealand’s Department of Conservation. An exceptional bull recorded in South Georgia in 1913 measured 6.5 metres after flensing, with its original length estimated at about 6.85 metres. That historic animal was extraordinary, not a normal adult benchmark.
There is no scientifically standardized “top 10” table covering every seal species. The comparison below is therefore approximate: it uses the adult length and mass figures available from government, scientific and conservation sources, while identifying whether each figure describes males, females, both sexes, a typical range or a maximum.

What is the biggest seal in the world?
The southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) is the largest seal species. Smithsonian Ocean describes it as larger than even the walrus, although a walrus is a different pinniped and should not be counted as a seal. The species’ enormous size is driven largely by its adult males; females are substantially smaller. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation lists adult males at 4–5 metres and 3,600 kilograms.

Guinness World Records reports that a bull killed at Possession Bay, South Georgia, on 28 February 1913 weighed at least four tonnes and measured 6.5 metres after flensing. Its original length was estimated at approximately 6.85 metres. Flensing removes the skin and blubber, so the post-flensing measurement is not directly interchangeable with an ordinary live-animal length.

For context, Smithsonian Ocean identifies the ringed seal as the smallest seal. The difference between ringed seals and elephant seals illustrates how widely body size varies across the seal family.
How this approximate ranking was made
The entries are arranged broadly by the largest adult dimensions reported in the cited sources, not by a single authoritative global database. The figures are difficult to rank perfectly because the sources use different standards.
- Sex: elephant, gray and leopard seal figures can be strongly sex-specific. A male maximum cannot be compared without qualification to a mixed-sex average.
- Measurement type: some sources give a normal adult range, others a maximum, and others describe one sex only.
- Units and conventions: length may be measured differently, and the Guinness record was taken after flensing while its original length was estimated.
- Evidence coverage: the available sources provide comparable figures for eight species. Two additional species are included at the end as unranked candidates because the cited material does not provide standardized measurements for them.
Accordingly, the list is best read as a guide to the largest seal species and their documented scale, rather than as a definitive scientific order from first to tenth.

The 10 largest seal species: approximate comparison
| Approximate position | Species | Documented adult size | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Southern elephant seal | Adult males: 4–5 m; 3,600 kg (New Zealand Department of Conservation). Historic bull: 6.5 m after flensing; original length estimated about 6.85 m; at least 4 tonnes (Guinness World Records). | Largest species; the record animal is exceptional and measured under a different convention. |
| 2 | Northern elephant seal | 10–13 ft; 1,300–4,400 lb (NOAA Fisheries). Adult males reach 4.2 m and a maximum of 2,500 kg (IUCN Red List, 2015). | Second-largest pinniped in the IUCN assessment and the largest true seal in the Northern Hemisphere, according to NOAA. |
| 3 | Bearded seal | About 7–8 ft; 575–800 lb (NOAA Fisheries). | NOAA calls it the largest Arctic seal; the source gives a general size range rather than a sex-specific maximum. |
| 4 | Weddell seal | Adults of both sexes are around 3 m and 400–500 kg (Australian Antarctic Program). | A mixed-sex adult estimate, unlike the male-focused elephant-seal figures. |
| 5 | Crabeater seal | Males and females can reach 2.5 m and 400 kg (Australian Antarctic Program). | Maximum dimensions reported for both sexes. |
| 6 | Gray seal | Adult males up to 10 ft and 880 lb; females about 7.5 ft and 550 lb (NOAA Fisheries). | Male and female sizes differ markedly, so the male figure drives its position. |
| 7 | Leopard seal | Females: 240–340 cm and 225–590 kg (IUCN Species Survival Commission). | The cited overview reports female measurements; it does not establish a directly comparable male maximum here. |
| 8 | Harp seal | Approximately 5–6 ft and 260–300 lb (NOAA Fisheries). | Useful scale context, but the source does not support an exact rank against every species above. |
| Unranked candidate | Hooded seal | Comparable adult size not stated in the cited sources. | Included to show why a complete ten-species order cannot be validated from the available measurements. |
| Unranked candidate | Ross seal | Comparable adult size not stated in the cited sources. | No standardized length-and-mass figure is available in the cited material for a defensible placement. |
1. Southern elephant seal: the clear heavyweight
Southern elephant seals breed on sub-Antarctic islands and Antarctic margins. Their size advantage is most obvious in mature males, which develop a large inflatable nose and a massive neck and chest. The Department of Conservation’s 4–5-metre, 3,600-kg description is the most useful routine benchmark for the species.
The 1913 Guinness entry needs careful wording. The 6.5-metre measurement was made after the animal had been flensed, and Guinness estimates that the living animal’s original length was about 6.85 metres. It is evidence of an exceptional individual record, not proof that every adult male approaches seven metres.
2. Northern elephant seal: the largest seal in the Northern Hemisphere
Northern elephant seals are the closest size comparison to their southern relatives. NOAA gives a broad adult range of 10–13 feet and 1,300–4,400 pounds, while the 2015 IUCN assessment records adult males reaching 4.2 metres and a maximum of 2,500 kilograms. Those figures overlap in subject but not in measurement style, so they should not be merged into one “average.”

NOAA describes the northern elephant seal as the largest of the “true” seals in the Northern Hemisphere. The southern species remains larger in the comparison figures above.
3. Bearded seal: the Arctic size leader
NOAA identifies the bearded seal as the largest Arctic seal. Its reported adult dimensions—about 7–8 feet and 575–800 pounds—make it much smaller than elephant seals but larger than many other northern seal species. The bearded seal’s long whiskers help it locate prey on the seafloor, but the size statement here is simply a body-size comparison, not a claim about feeding strategy.
4. Weddell seal
The Australian Antarctic Program reports adults of both sexes at around 3 metres and 400–500 kilograms. Because the estimate covers males and females together, it is more comparable to a mixed-sex adult range than to a maximum male elephant-seal measurement.

5. Crabeater seal
Despite its name, the crabeater seal mainly filters Antarctic krill rather than eating true crabs. The Australian Antarctic Program gives a maximum of 2.5 metres and 400 kilograms for males and females. Its mass can therefore approach the lower end of Weddell-seal figures even though its reported maximum length is shorter.
6. Gray seal
Gray seals demonstrate why sex labels matter. NOAA reports adult males up to 10 feet and 880 pounds, compared with females at about 7.5 feet and 550 pounds. A list that used only the male maximum would make the species appear substantially larger than a list based on a mixed-sex average.

The IUCN overview reports female leopard seals at 240–340 centimetres and 225–590 kilograms. Leopard seals are powerful Antarctic predators, but the cited measurements describe females and do not provide a directly matched male maximum. Their position in any “largest” list therefore depends on whether the comparison uses female ranges, male maxima or a mixed-sex standard.

8. Harp seal
NOAA gives harp seals an approximate adult size of 5–6 feet and 260–300 pounds. That makes them a useful lower-bound comparison in this group of large seals. The available figure is not enough to prove an exact eighth-place ranking against every seal species worldwide, which is why the order is labeled approximate.
Why a definitive top ten is difficult
Seal size is not one number. A mature male may be several times heavier than a female, and a source may report a maximum, a normal adult range or a value for one sex. Length also depends on whether the animal is measured alive, along a curve or after processing. The Guinness record illustrates the problem directly: its post-flensing length and estimated original length are both useful, but they answer different questions.
Geography and season can affect body mass as well. Seals may gain or lose substantial reserves around breeding and fasting periods, so a field measurement is not necessarily representative of the species at every time of year. For a scientifically rigorous ranking, every species would need measurements collected with the same protocol, from comparable age classes and sexes. The cited sources do not provide that uniform dataset.
How to use the list without misreading it
- Use the southern elephant seal as the answer when someone asks which seal is largest.
- Quote the 4–5-metre, 3,600-kilogram figure as a typical adult-male benchmark, not as the size of every individual.
- Present the 1913 Guinness animal as an exceptional historical record and identify the post-flensing measurement.
- Keep male-only, female-only and mixed-sex figures labeled whenever you compare species.
- Do not treat a broad “ten largest” list as a formal scientific ranking unless all entries use the same measurement method.
Key takeaways
Southern elephant seals are the largest seal species, with adult males commonly described at 4–5 metres and about 3,600 kilograms. Northern elephant seals are the next major size benchmark and the largest true seals in the Northern Hemisphere. Bearded, Weddell, crabeater, gray, leopard and harp seals occupy the next broad tier, but their published figures use different sexes, ranges and maximums. Two further species cannot be placed responsibly from the cited measurements, so any exact tenth-place claim would overstate the evidence.
