A good orthopedic dog bed should do more than feel soft. It should keep your dog’s hips and elbows from pressing into the floor, stay stable when they stand up, offer an entry they can manage, and survive the cleaning routine that comes with an aging or incontinent dog.
We compared 12 leading beds using published tester reports and current manufacturer or retailer specifications. The evaluation focused on support, sleeping-surface size, entry height, bolsters, non-slip performance, liquid protection, cover maintenance, durability, and suitability for different dogs.
Our top pick is the Bedsure Supportive Dog Couch because it combines a thick shredded-foam sleep surface, a low front entry, useful bolsters, several sizes, and a washable cover. However, a giant breed, an aggressive chewer, a dog that sleeps hot, and a dog that needs a flat crate bed may all do better with different choices.

#1 Best Overall
- Polyurethane Foam: The EHEYCIGA orthopedic dog bed features memory foam and egg crate foam to provide even support and pressure relief. It offers a good balance of softness and support, making it particularly suitable for elderly dogs to alleviate joint pressure.
- SOFA BED DESIGN: This bolster dog bed is designed with 3-sided bolsters to offer additional support for your pet’s neck and head, promoting restful sleep. The surrounding sides encourage your dog to snuggle in and enjoy a comfortable night's rest.
- WATERPROOF COVER: A waterproof film is positioned between the fleece surface and the bottom fabric, ensuring the dog bed remains dry. However, the sides are not waterproof.
- EXTREME COMFORT & MULTIPLE SIZES: The sleeping surface is covered with cozy fleece, creating a soft and inviting sleeping area for your pet. Whatever the size of your dog, we have a dog bed suitable for medium, large, and extra-large breeds.
- CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Remove foam, machine wash cover separately in cold water only, on a delicate cycle.Do not bleach, tumble dry low, and reshape as needed. Do not machine wash or dry the foam core. Allow the bed to expand for 24-48 hours after unpacking.
How we assessed orthopedic dog beds
“Orthopedic” is a marketing term, not a regulated standard. It does not guarantee a particular foam density, thickness, lifespan, or medical benefit. A bed with shredded foam, microcoils, egg-crate foam, or layered solid foam can all be supportive if it remains stable under the dog’s weight.
Our comparison combines product specifications with testing and review reports from Forbes Vetted, Chewy, and Sleep Foundation. The practical questions were:
- Does the dog bottom out when lying down?
- Does the support remain stable after repeated use?
- Can a stiff or arthritic dog step into it easily?
- Does the base slide across hard flooring?
- Can the cover be removed, washed, and put back without a struggle?
- Is there a water-resistant or waterproof liner, or only a washable outer cover?
- Does the construction suit the dog’s sleeping style, size, and chewing habits?
Outside dimensions can be misleading because bolsters take up sleeping space. Measure your dog from nose to tail while fully stretched out, then compare that measurement with the usable mattress area. Big Barker recommends choosing a bed several inches longer than the dog.
The 12 best orthopedic dog beds
1. Bedsure Supportive Dog Couch: best overall
The Bedsure is the most broadly useful option in this group, particularly for senior and large dogs that want a couch-style bed without a difficult step-over entrance. Its sleep surface is about 6 inches thick and filled with shredded foam. A polyester sherpa cover, surrounding bolsters, washable cover, and low front entry round out the design. It comes in five sizes, from medium through XL Plus, for dogs listed at approximately 40 to 120 pounds.
Forbes Vetted’s tester used it with a 60-pound senior dog. After a month of daily use, the dog used the bed regularly and the headrest retained its shape. The shredded construction may also feel less heat-trapping than a single solid slab of foam.
Watch-outs: Shredded foam does not automatically equal superior support, and the usable sleeping area is smaller than the external dimensions suggest. Measure carefully, especially for dogs that stretch out.
2. Casper The Dog Bed: best for diggers
Casper uses two foam layers: memory foam over polyurethane support foam. Four bolsters give dogs a defined place to rest their heads, while the cover is made from machine-washable olefin with hidden zippers. The cover is designed to withstand digging and scratching, making this a sensible choice for dogs that circle, paw, and rearrange bedding before settling.
Forbes and Chewy testers included a young “super chewer.” Chewy also tested liquid resistance. The bed’s construction stood up well to digging and scratching, but the cover was difficult to reinstall after washing.

Confirm current availability: a Chewy listing was out of stock when checked, although the manufacturer’s page remained active.
3. Big Barker Original Orthopedic Dog Bed, Headrest Edition: best for large and giant breeds
Big Barker is built around a 7-inch, three-layer foam core and a built-in headrest. Large, XL, and Giant versions measure 48×30×7, 52×36×7, and 60×48×7 inches, respectively. That makes it one of the strongest candidates for dogs that overwhelm ordinary beds by hanging over the edge or compressing the foam to the floor.
Rank #2
- MEMORY FOAM: The EHEYCIGA orthopedic dog bed features memory foam and egg crate foam to provide even support and pressure relief.
However, the faux linen sides are not waterproof.
- EXTREME COMFORT & MULTIPLE SIZES: The sleeping surface is covered with cozy fleece, creating a soft and inviting sleeping area for your pet. Whatever the size of your dog, we have a dog bed suitable for medium, large, and extra-large breeds.
- CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Our dog bed features a removable and washable cover with a zipper closure, making it easy to clean. Remove the foam insert, and the cover can be washed in a machine. Please note that the foam insert is not washable. Allow the bed to expand for 24-48 hours after unpacking.
The manufacturer’s 10-year “No Flatten” warranty covers retention of at least 90% of the bed’s original shape and support. Forbes tested the Headrest Edition, while Chewy lists the size dimensions above.
Watch-outs: It is large, heavy, and expensive. The headrest and thick foam also make it less convenient to move between rooms. As with any warranty, read the current terms and exclusions before treating it as a guarantee of indefinite performance.

4. FurHaven Sofa Dog Bed: best value with foam choices
FurHaven is useful when you know the general bed shape you want but are unsure which foam construction suits your dog. It is available from medium through Jumbo Plus, with approximately 3 to 5 inches of sleep-surface loft. Options include convoluted egg-crate foam, solid polyurethane foam, solid memory foam, and cooling-gel-infused memory foam.
The sofa design offers bolsters while leaving an easier front entrance, and the cover is machine washable. A Forbes tester reported using the bed for several years; their 3-inch models had not flattened to the floor. That is a more meaningful durability observation than simply describing the foam as “orthopedic.”
Watch-outs: Reassembling the cover after washing takes patience. The correct foam option and size matter, so do not assume every FurHaven configuration provides the same support or cooling performance.
5. Orvis RecoveryZone ToughChew Couch Dog Bed: best for aggressive chewers
The Orvis ToughChew Couch combines a 4-inch medium-density solid foam base with a 1-inch Serene Foam top layer. It has a three-sided, full-height foam bolster, a water-resistant liner, hidden zipper, handles, and a machine-washable cover. The cover is backed by Orvis’s ToughChew Guarantee.
Forbes tested it with an anxious 40-pound dog that regularly scratched and tore beds. After months of use, the tester reported no hole. That is encouraging, but it is not proof that any bed is chew-proof. Few fabrics withstand every determined dog, and Orvis’s guarantee is an important part of the value proposition.
Watch-outs: The surface is firmer than plush beds. Dogs that want a soft, nest-like cushion may reject it, even though the firmer feel can benefit dogs that need stable support.
6. Wag Luxe Dog Bed: best cooling orthopedic-style bed
The Wag Luxe uses four foam layers: cooling gel, memory foam, copper-infused foam, and charcoal-infused foam. It also has a water-resistant liner and washable cover, with sizes from small through XL. Older articles may call this the Sealy Lux Pet Dog Bed; Wag Luxe is the current name used in the cited guide.
Forbes evaluated cooling, odor resistance, joint support, and cover maintenance. Its layered construction is appealing for dogs that sleep warm or for rooms where a thick solid-foam bed would feel stuffy.

- Cradled Comfort & Support: This orthopedic dog bed is built with CertiPUR-US certified egg crate foam that conforms closely to your dog's body, delivering soft yet supportive cushioning to help dogs relieve joint and muscle pressure. Designed to offer optimal orthopedic comfort and help dogs to seek deeper sleep, especially suitable for senior dogs with anxiety and large dogs with arthritis.
- Waterproof & Machine Washable: This dog bed cover features a waterproof inner liner that prevents liquids from soaking into the foam. The soft outer cover is fully removable and machine washable. Cleaning is simple: unzip and remove the bottom foam and bolsters, zip the cover closed, then machine wash it on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low. Two cover designs ship at random - removable and unremovable bolster covers. For the unremovable bolster cover, you don’t need to remove the bolster for cleaning (the bottom foam still needs to be removed). Same great quality!
- Safe & Cozy Dog Sofa Design: Crafted with your pet's daily comfort in mind, our orthopedic dog bed features OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified fabric for a soft, gentle surface. The 3-sided bolster design provides a secure nest and extra support for your dog's head and neck, promoting a cozy resting posture and deeper sleeping. Additionally, the non-slip bottom keeps the xlarge dog bed firmly in place during naps and play, ensuring it stays where you put it.
- Size for Pet, Style for Home: Available in a range of stylish colors to complement your home. This dog couch bed comes in a full spectrum of sizes to fit all breeds pets from Mini to XXL, from small kittens to giant breed dogs. Our XL size dog bed (42"L x 30"W, with a 34"L x 26"W sleeping area) features a 3.5" thick supportive base and 5" bolsters, a suitable choice for dogs up to 32" long and 90 lbs, such as labradors, golden retrievers, and german shepherds.
- Built to Last, Loved for Years: The doggy bed arrives vacuum-packed. After opening, gently tap the bolsters and lay out the foam base, then allow 48 hours for the dog bed to reach full shape and loft. Designed for daily life and favored by pet owners, Comfort Expression dog bed maintains its dependable support through years of lasting comfort. More than just a cozy pet bed, it's a lasting companion for your pet's comfort, delivering enduring value.
Watch-outs: Cooling layers should not be treated as proof that a bed lowers a dog’s body temperature. The bed is not recommended for aggressive chewers and may be impractical in a small room because of its footprint.
7. Helix Dog Bed: best waterproof mattress-style bed
Helix takes a cleaner mattress approach rather than a heavily cushioned sofa design. It is offered in small and large sofa-style versions, with high-density foam and a cover containing a sewn-in waterproof membrane. The removable cover provides a practical advantage for accidents, and Sleep Foundation specifically notes that the bed contains no fiberglass.
Sleep Foundation named it its current overall pick and lists a 30-night trial plus a one-year warranty against material and structural defects.
Watch-outs: Check the usable sleeping surface and bolster configuration before choosing a size. A waterproof membrane protects against accidents, but it does not remove the need to wash the outer cover promptly after a spill.
8. Saatva Dog Bed: best luxury option
The Saatva Dog Bed uses plush fiber fill over a microcoil base. Its liquid-repellent cover and skid-free base address two common household problems: minor spills and beds that migrate across wood or tile floors. Small, medium, and large sizes are listed for dogs up to 45, 90, and 120 pounds.
Sleep Foundation selected it as its luxury pick and lists a 45-night trial and one-year warranty against structural and material defects. The microcoil construction also gives it a different feel from the foam-only beds in this lineup.
Watch-outs: The cover is removable for spot cleaning rather than being presented as a fully machine-washable solution in the cited specifications. That may be a drawback for dogs prone to accidents, muddy paws, or heavy shedding.
9. Lesure High-Back Orthopedic Dog Bed: best budget high-back sofa
Lesure uses dense foam inside a polyester cover, with fleece-padded armrests, a high back, and a non-slip base. It suits dogs that like to lean against a wall of cushioning or use a raised back as a headrest without the price of a premium giant-breed bed. Four sizes are available.

The high-back sofa format can provide a sense of enclosure while keeping the front more accessible than a fully enclosed bolster bed.
Watch-outs: The cover is not water-repellent or stain-resistant. Spills need spot cleaning, so this is a less suitable choice for incontinent dogs unless you add a washable waterproof liner or blanket.

10. Hest Dog Bed: best for travel and camping
Hest is designed to leave the house. It rolls up like a sleeping bag and has two clips for compression or backpack attachment. Expanded dimensions reach approximately 33×44 inches. Two memory-foam layers provide cushioning, while a waterproof lining and water- and dirt-resistant machine-washable cover make it better suited to campsites, road trips, and outdoor use than a bulky indoor couch bed.
Sleep Foundation lists guidance for dogs up to 30 pounds in small, 30 to 60 pounds in medium, and over 60 pounds in large, along with a 100-night trial.

Watch-outs: A roll-up travel bed is not necessarily the best permanent bed for a very large or severely arthritic dog. Check the expanded dimensions, not just the weight recommendation, and give the foam time to fully expand after unpacking.
11. Frisco Quilted Orthopedic Pillow Lounger: best budget flat bed
The Frisco is a straightforward flat pillow lounger with a 3-inch solid memory-foam cushion and removable machine-washable cover. Chewy’s tested large model measures 35×23 inches. There are no bolsters or headrests, which is exactly why it can work well for dogs that sleep stretched out, dislike raised edges, or need a flat bed inside a crate.
Chewy tested it with a 14-year-old senior dog, including spot cleaning, hair removal, and washing the cover. At the time of checking, the retailer guide showed a 4.6/5 rating from approximately 1,900 reviews.
Watch-outs: Three inches may not be enough for a heavy dog, and the large model is not especially long. Measure your dog’s full stretched-out length before ordering.

Serta combines 4-inch egg-crate foam with three bolsters and a removable machine-washable quilted cover. Chewy lists Petite and Large sizes. The bolsters give a small dog a headrest and a contained sleeping area without the bulk of a giant sofa bed.
Chewy tested the bed with a 14-year-old Chihuahua mix over several weeks. The cover held up during testing, although putting it back on was somewhat difficult.
Watch-outs: Chewy warns that the Large may not leave enough room for bigger breeds to stretch out fully. “Large” is not a universal measurement, so compare the actual sleeping area with your dog’s length.

Start with the sleeping surface, not the outside dimensions
Measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while they are fully stretched out. Add several inches, then compare that figure with the interior sleeping surface. On a bolster bed, the advertised width and length include the raised edges.

Choose entry height carefully
Older dogs and dogs with arthritis may struggle with a high wall. An open-front, three-sided bolster can provide head support without forcing the dog to step over a tall edge. Watch your dog stand up and lie down: hesitation, slipping, or repeatedly abandoning the bed can indicate that the design is not working.
Distinguish a washable cover from waterproof protection
A removable cover can be machine washable without protecting the foam from urine. Helix, Orvis, Hest, and Wag list waterproof or water-resistant liners. Lesure is specifically described as neither water-repellent nor stain-resistant. If accidents are likely, prioritize a sealed liner or use a separate waterproof protector.
Consider temperature
Solid memory foam can retain heat. Shredded foam may allow more airflow, while Wag and some FurHaven configurations use cooling-gel layers. These are construction differences, not guarantees that a particular bed will cool every dog. A breathable room, shade, and access to water matter too.
Be realistic about chewing claims
“Tough-chew” and “scratch-resistant” are more useful than “chew-proof,” which should not be treated as an absolute promise. The Orvis guarantee and Casper’s tested resistance to digging are meaningful product details, but a dog that destroys beds may still need supervision and a replacement plan.

Does an orthopedic dog bed treat arthritis?
No. A supportive bed can be a comfort and home-management aid, but it is not a diagnosis, cure, or replacement for veterinary arthritis care.
Big Barker cites an open-label, single-arm proof-of-concept study involving 40 dogs over age 3, weighing more than 70 pounds, and diagnosed with osteoarthritis. The dogs used Big Barker beds for 38 days, and owners reported improvements in pain, stiffness, joint function, gait, quality of life, and nighttime restfulness. Because there was no control group and the outcomes were owner-reported, the study does not establish that all orthopedic beds treat arthritis.
Speak with your veterinarian if your dog is reluctant to stand, limps, cries when moving, stops using stairs, or changes sleeping habits suddenly. A new bed can support comfort while the underlying problem is assessed and managed.
FAQ
What is the best orthopedic dog bed overall?
The Bedsure Supportive Dog Couch is the strongest all-around choice for many senior and large dogs. It has a roughly 6-inch shredded-foam sleep surface, a low front entry, bolsters, five sizes, and a washable cover. Choose another model if your dog needs a waterproof liner, a flat crate bed, or a travel-friendly design.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is memory foam better than egg-crate or shredded foam for dogs?
Not automatically. Support depends on the foam’s construction, thickness, density, and how well it holds the dog above the floor. Solid memory foam can provide stable support but may retain heat; egg-crate foam is lighter and often less expensive; shredded foam can feel more breathable. The individual dog’s weight, sleeping position, and preference matter.
How thick should an orthopedic dog bed be?
There is no single correct thickness. A heavy dog generally needs a thicker, denser support layer than a small dog, and the bed should not compress until the dog’s hips or elbows reach the floor. Measure the dog and inspect the actual sleeping surface rather than relying on an “orthopedic” label or overall bed height.
Are orthopedic dog beds waterproof?
No. A washable cover is not the same as a waterproof bed. Helix, Orvis, Hest, and Wag list waterproof or water-resistant liners, while the cited Lesure specifications say its cover is not water-repellent or stain-resistant. If your dog has accidents, check for a sealed liner and clean spills promptly.
The Bottom Line
The Bedsure Supportive Dog Couch is the best starting point for most senior and large dogs, but there is no universal winner. Pick Big Barker for a giant breed, Orvis for a persistent bed destroyer, Hest for travel, Frisco for a flat budget bed, and Helix when liquid protection is a priority. Measure the usable sleeping surface, check how easily your dog can enter, and treat every orthopedic claim as a construction description—not a promise of medical treatment.
