It was described in 2023 from specimens collected during 2020–2022—not just discovered in 2026. Its eyes sit in four sensory clusters, and researchers believe only two eyes in each cluster form images.
What is the 24-eyed creature?
Tripedalia maipoensis is a box jellyfish in the class Cubozoa and family Tripedaliidae. A Hong Kong Baptist University-led team described it in 2023 after collecting specimens at Mai Po during the summers of 2020–2022. The discovery was reported as the first new box jellyfish species found in Chinese waters and the third described species in the genus Tripedalia at that time. HKBU’s announcement gives the species’ description and collection details.

What does it look like?
HKBU reports an average body length of 1.5 cm. The animal has a transparent, colorless bell with four corners. Three tentacles, each reaching up to 10 cm, extend from each corner. At the base of each tentacle is a flat, paddle-like structure called a pedalium, which helps the jellyfish generate swimming thrust.

How are its 24 eyes arranged?
Four sensory clubs, called rhopalia, are attached around the bell. Each carries six eyes, making 24 in total. The number does not mean the jellyfish sees 24 detailed images: the researchers believe that two eyes in each cluster have lenses and can form images, while the other four detect light.

A study of the related species Tripedalia cystophora describes a similar general arrangement of lens eyes and simpler light-sensing eyes in box jellyfish. That paper examined T. cystophora, not T. maipoensis, so its optical measurements should not be treated as measurements of the Mai Po species. The 2005 Nature study provides context for the eye arrangement.
How did scientists identify a new species?
The team compared physical features and molecular evidence. One distinguishing feature reported by HKBU is the structure of the velarial canals—channels in the bell’s margin that help with swimming. In T. maipoensis, these canals are bifurcated and have multiple branches, setting it apart from other described species in its genus.

Where does it live?
The confirmed records in the discovery announcement are from Mai Po’s brackish gei wai shrimp ponds. Professor Qiu Jianwen of HKBU said the species may also occur in nearby Pearl River Estuary waters because tidal channels connect the ponds to the estuary. That is a proposed possibility, not a confirmed wider range.

Is it dangerous to people?
The human sting risk is not established in the reporting available on the discovery. Live Science reported that researchers had not tested the species’ sting on humans; in a laboratory observation, it appeared to paralyze offered Artemia (brine shrimp). That observation does not establish what a sting would do to a person. Do not assume its effects from the reputation of other box jellyfish. Live Science’s 2023 report discusses the limits of what was known about its sting.

The discovery establishes a species record at Mai Po, but the announcement and reporting cited here do not establish its population size, abundance trend, conservation status, or confirmed distribution beyond the reserve. HKBU quoted Professor Qiu saying that the discovery in a relatively well-studied area highlights Hong Kong’s and China’s marine diversity; it does not, by itself, quantify how common the jellyfish is.
