What happened at the South Carolina facility?
Yemassee police said 43 young female rhesus macaques escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Facility near Yemassee, South Carolina. The animals were seen around the facility perimeter while employees watched them and tried to entice them back with food. Police attributed the escape to a caretaker failing to secure doors.
In the November 8 update, police described the macaques as calm and playful. Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard told CBS News, as quoted by Ars Technica, that they were “just being goofy monkeys jumping back and forth playing with each other,” and called the scene “kind of like a playground situation here.” That description reflects the situation at the time, not their later status.
Were the escaped monkeys dangerous?
Contemporaneous reporting said police described the animals as very young and small, not yet used for testing, and posing no health risk to the public. This was an assessment reported during the November 2024 incident, not a current or general health assessment of rhesus macaques.
