Cats.com’s six picks cover different needs, but they are an editorial comparison—not a head-to-head clinical ranking. Suspected ear mites should be confirmed by a veterinarian because other ear problems can cause similar signs. The right treatment depends on the diagnosis, your cat’s age, ingredients, and whether prescription care is appropriate.
This guide summarizes the products and cautions in Cats.com’s article, “The 6 Best Ear Mite Treatments for Cats,” written by Katelynn Sobus and medically reviewed by JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM, last updated June 1, 2026. The article says its editors considered 22 brands and spent more than 125 hours on their review; those are editorial-process figures, not clinical evidence that one treatment works better than another. How to tell whether your cat may have ear mites
Dark discharge, waxy crust, an unpleasant odor, head shaking, scratching around the ears, or hair loss can signal an ear problem. These signs do not establish that mites are the cause. Ear mites and other ear conditions can look similar, so Cats.com recommends veterinary examination and, when needed, sampling ear discharge to confirm the diagnosis.
That distinction matters: a product intended to ease irritation or clean the ear is not necessarily a mite treatment. Avoid starting a mite-killing product solely on the basis of symptoms, especially if the ear is painful or inflamed.

The six Cats.com picks, and what each is for

How to choose between an over-the-counter and prescription option
Over-the-counter ear medicines
Hartz, Adams, and Sentry are described as OTC ear medicines containing pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide. The article notes possible reactions to pyrethrin products and age cautions for these options. Use only as labeled and seek veterinary advice if your cat is very young, has a reaction, or has painful or worsening symptoms. The article does not report a controlled trial comparing these products.
Prescription selamectin
Revolution is a prescription topical product applied to the skin. Cats.com presents it as an option to discuss with a veterinarian, rather than an ear drop. Diagnosis and prescribing guidance are important to determine whether it is appropriate for your cat and situation.
Rank #3
- Veterinarian Formulated to Gently Clean, Deodorize, Acidify and Dry Your Pets Ears
- Safe And Gentle Ear Cleanser with Aloe Vera for Daily Use. Won't Sting, Burn or Aggravate the Ear Canal
- Eliminates Build Up of Wax, Fluid, Dirt & Debris to Stop Itching, Scratching, Head Shaking and Irritation.
- Helps Relieve Ear Infections Caused by Growths, Buildup, and Itching.
- Made in the USA in Federally Regulated Manufacturing Facilities to Ensure Quality and Safety.
Natural-formula products
Arava is Cats.com’s natural-formula pick, but “natural” does not establish that an ingredient is harmless to cats or that a product will eliminate mites. The article specifically cautions about higher amounts of lemongrass and peppermint and reports a minimum age of 12 months. Ask your veterinarian before use and follow the label’s directions.
Products aimed at irritation rather than mites
Zymox Otic with hydrocortisone is included for inflammation, not as a mite-killing treatment. If mites are confirmed, symptom relief alone does not address the mite infestation. A veterinarian can advise whether an ear product is suitable alongside treatment for the confirmed cause.

Can you treat cat ear mites without a vet?
Some of the products Cats.com lists are sold over the counter, but availability does not confirm that your cat has mites or that a particular product is suitable. Because several ear problems can cause similar signs, veterinary confirmation helps avoid treating the wrong condition. The veterinarian may examine the ear and sample discharge; the diagnosis, age of the cat, other parasites, and product ingredients all affect the choice.

Does a one-time treatment get rid of ear mites?
The Cats.com article contrasts OTC ear medicines applied in the ear with prescription selamectin described as a monthly treatment. It does not establish that any named product is a one-time cure. Do not assume that one application is enough: follow the specific product label and your veterinarian’s instructions, and arrange follow-up if advised.
Cleaning the ears: an adjunct, not a mite treatment
Cats.com discusses Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner as a cleaning adjunct before topical medication, not as a product that kills mites. Use only an ear cleaner designed for that purpose and follow its instructions. The article cautions against alcohol and hydrogen peroxide in the ear. If the ear is painful, markedly inflamed, or your cat resists handling, ask a veterinarian before cleaning.
When to check back with the veterinarian
Follow the course recommended for the confirmed diagnosis rather than stopping because visible signs improve. Cats.com attributes this additional caution to Dr. Vanderhoof: “Natural remedies are appealing to many, but some of their antibacterial properties may not be as effective against mites. If you use this approach, it’s important to have your cat’s ears checked in 2-3 weeks so your vet can check if any mites are still present.” If symptoms persist, return, or worsen, contact your veterinarian rather than switching products or extending treatment on your own.
