Feed a pregnant cat a complete and balanced commercial kitten or growth-formula food, or a food specifically formulated for gestation and lactation. Ask your veterinarian to tailor portions and meal frequency to her appetite, body condition, and health. Do not add calcium, vitamins, or other supplements unless your veterinarian recommends them.

Which food should a pregnant cat eat?

Choose a complete commercial kitten food or growth-formula cat food. A food formulated and tested for gestation and lactation, or for all life stages, is another appropriate option. These diets are designed to meet the higher nutritional demands of pregnancy and nursing.

In the United States, check the package’s nutritional adequacy statement: it identifies the life stage for which the food is complete and balanced. Marketing phrases alone do not establish nutritional adequacy. VCA recommends high-quality commercial kitten food or a growth formulation, and notes that foods tested for gestation and lactation or all life stages can also be suitable (VCA Animal Hospitals: Feeding the Pregnant Cat; Merck Veterinary Manual: Proper Nutrition for Cats).

If your cat has a medical condition or is already on a prescribed diet, ask her veterinarian before changing foods. Homemade diets should not be formulated independently; consult a veterinarian, and ideally a veterinary nutritionist, to ensure the recipe is complete and balanced (Merck Veterinary Manual).

How much and how often should you feed her?

Her food needs change as pregnancy progresses, and intake varies between cats. Keep enough complete food available to meet her needs while monitoring her weight and body condition with veterinary guidance. There is no single portion that suits every pregnant cat.

Veterinary references express the increase in different ways. Merck’s small-animal nutrition reference says food amount and nutrient intake normally rise by an average of 25% during the latter third of gestation; it also describes estimated pregnancy energy intake as high as 40% above maintenance. Merck’s cat-owner guide says a veterinarian may recommend 25% more food during the last three weeks. These are general reference figures, not individual feeding prescriptions, and the timing and framing differ (Merck Veterinary Manual: Feeding Practices in Small Animals; Merck Veterinary Manual: Management of Reproduction of Cats).

Meal feeding can help you keep track of how much she eats and manage body condition. If a large meal becomes uncomfortable or she eats less late in pregnancy, offer several smaller meals; VCA notes this may help maintain adequate intake in the final trimester. Merck also describes ad libitum feeding or several meals a day as ways to meet the needs of pregnant and nursing cats. Work with your veterinarian to choose the approach and portions for your cat.

What should she eat while nursing?

Nursing is a separate, energy-intensive stage, so continue an appropriate kitten, growth, or gestation-and-lactation diet while she is feeding her kittens, following your veterinarian’s advice. VCA recommends energy-dense commercial kitten food for nursing cats. Merck’s cat-owner guide says a nursing cat may need two to three times her normal food amount; treat that as general guidance rather than a target for every cat (VCA Animal Hospitals; Merck Veterinary Manual).

As the kittens grow and begin weaning, ask your veterinarian when and how to adjust the mother’s portions or transition her diet. Pregnancy and lactation have different demands, so reassess rather than assuming the same feeding amount remains appropriate throughout.

Should you give calcium, vitamins, or other supplements?

Not by default. If your cat is eating a complete and balanced growth or properly tested all-life-stages diet, she generally does not need added calcium, vitamins, or minerals. Merck specifically advises against dietary supplements such as calcium or vitamins unless a veterinarian recommends them (Merck Veterinary Manual; VCA Animal Hospitals: Breeding and Queening Cats).

Do not add milk, dairy, calcium, or a multivitamin as routine pregnancy food. If you are concerned about her diet or think she may need a supplement, check with her veterinarian first; the right advice depends on her full diet and health.

When to call the veterinarian about feeding

Contact your veterinarian for individualized feeding advice if your cat has unusual appetite or weight changes, a known illness, eats a homemade diet, or you are unsure whether her food is complete for pregnancy and nursing. Also ask for help if you are considering supplements or have concerns during pregnancy or lactation. This guidance is general and cannot replace a ration plan based on her condition and veterinary history.
