For most large cats, the best litter box is the longest open pan your floor space allows, with an entry low enough for your cat to step in easily. Length matters most. The Tuft & Paw comparative roundup (2024) sets a 20 × 15 inch floor as its minimum for large boxes and advises a box at least 1.5 times the cat’s length. That is the publisher’s rule of thumb, not a veterinary or standards-body requirement, but it gives you a number to measure against.
Labels such as “XL,” “Giant,” and “Jumbo” do not show whether a particular cat will fit. The comparison below uses published dimensions, entry height, and wall height, and it shows where each box falls short of the length rule.
How to size a litter box for your cat
- Measure your cat from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, with the cat relaxed and standing or lying still. Write the number down in inches.
- Multiply that number by 1.5. This is the minimum floor length the Tuft & Paw rule implies.
- Compare the result with the box’s listed length. Listed dimensions are outside measurements unless the maker says otherwise, so usable floor space is likely a little smaller than the number on the page.
- Confirm the box leaves room for your cat to turn around and to dig at one end while staying inside the walls.
- Measure the spot where the box will go. Check whether the box will block a doorway, a food bowl, or a path your cat uses.
| Cat’s nose-to-tail length | Minimum floor length under the 1.5× rule |
|---|---|
| 16 in | 24 in |
| 18 in | 27 in |
| 20 in | 30 in |
| 22 in | 33 in |
For a cat measuring 18 inches or more, the rule asks for a floor longer than any box in this roundup. The longest, the tüft + paw Cove, is 26 inches. Use the rule as a target for the longest box you can accommodate, not as a pass or fail test.
The eight boxes compared
Dimensions are listed in inches as published. The guide calls the Frisco XL its largest listed box, but by published measurements the Petmate Giant has a larger floor (25.56 × 18.30 inches against 24 × 18 inches). This comparison ranks by measurement. The last column applies the 1.5× rule in reverse: floor length divided by 1.5 gives the longest cat that box’s length suits.

| Box | Floor (L × W, in) | Height (in) | Entry and walls | Longest cat the length suits | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petmate Giant | 25.56 × 18.30 | 10.02 | Open pan, high sides, sloped entry | 17.0 in | Petmate states it can hold over 30 lb of litter. |
| tüft + paw Cove | 26 × 16 | 6.5 (scatter shield adds 8) | Open design, low entry | 17.3 in | The guide’s top pick. It may squeeze the very largest cats with the shield attached. |
| Frisco XL High Sided | 24 × 18 | 10 | Open top, high walls, lowered entry | 16.0 in | The guide’s budget pick. It flags plastic that may crack. |
| iPrimio XL Stainless Steel | 23.5 × 15.5 | 6 (optional 6-inch scatter shield) | Low, accessible basin | 15.7 in | Durable steel. The guide notes higher price and weight, and a possible squeeze for the largest cats with the shield fitted. |
| PetFusion BetterBox Non-Stick Large | 22.6 × 18.1 | 8 | Smooth ABS basin, slightly lowered entry | 15.1 in | The guide says its sides do not contain scatter well. |
| tuft + paw Cubby | 21.2 × 15.2 | 6 (optional 8-inch scatter shield) | Lower entry, removable shield | 14.1 in | The guide says it may be tight for truly massive cats. |
| Petmate XL Litter Pan | 22 × 16.5 | 6.5 | Open pan, low and accessible | 14.7 in | Very low cost according to the guide. Material durability is its stated drawback. |
| Modkat XL | 21 × 16.5 | 17 | Top, front, or dual entry. Front opening 8.3 × 9.8 in, 6.25 in above the floor. Top entry width 10.25 in. | 14.0 in | Covered option. Its total footprint is smaller than most open boxes here, and an elevated top entry may not suit every cat. |
Alternate: Petmate Hi-Back Jumbo
The Petmate Hi-Back Jumbo measures 23.08 × 18.8 × 12.1 inches, with tall sides, a lowered entry, an open top, and a reinforced bottom. It is a reasonable substitute for the Frisco or Modkat when high walls and easy entry matter more than the guide’s rankings.

Older or mobility-limited cats
Entry height is the feature to check first. Modkat publishes its front opening at 8.3 × 9.8 inches, sitting 6.25 inches above the floor. Step over that height with your cat in mind, because a short or stiff cat may avoid a tall step even when the floor is large enough. Petmate describes the Hi-Back’s design this way: “A lowered entry provides an easy entrance for older cats or cats with mobility issues, while the open-top design provides plenty of space above that allows cats to move around freely inside.” That is manufacturer copy, not an independent test.
Rank #2
- EXTRA LARGE SIZE FOR COMFORT: This extra large cat litter box measures 22.83" x 14.96" x 10.2" with a roomy 36L capacity, giving cats more space to turn, dig, and stretch comfortably.
- QUICK CLEANING, LESS MESS: The stainless steel litter box features a smooth non-stick surface that helps prevent litter and waste from sticking, making daily scooping and cleaning easier.
- INWARD-SLOPING DESIGN: Curved geometry guides litter inward, matching your cat's digging. It redirects particles back into the pan, minimizing tracking and keeping floors spotless for easy cleaning.
- FRESHER THAN PLASTIC: Unlike plastic cat litter boxes, this metal litter box resists stains and odors, helping keep your cat’s litter area cleaner and smelling fresher longer.
- OPEN TOP WITH USEFUL EXTRAS: The open top litter box design improves airflow and visibility. Includes a matching litter scoop and 4 anti-slip pads for a more stable setup.
Open pans versus covered boxes
Open pans give a cat the most usable space and easy access from any side. Covered boxes add enclosure and may reduce odor visibility, but their entries are narrower. Petmate describes its Giant this way: “The oversized, open style also accommodates cats who do not like the confines of a hooded pan or those who require plenty of room.” Choose the style your cat already uses comfortably, and if you switch, keep the old box in place for a few weeks so the cat has a familiar option. Modkat’s covered box offers top, front, or dual entry, so you can test which opening your cat uses before settling on one.
A cat that pees over the side
Tall walls and scatter shields help contain kicked litter and overflow. The Frisco and Giant have 10-inch walls, and the Hi-Back has 12.1. A shield adds height, which can make the entry harder to use, so check the entry before adding one. Dimensions cannot show why a cat misses the box. If your cat is consistently going outside the box, have a veterinarian rule out medical causes before changing equipment, since pain or arthritis can make a high step hard to manage.

Material and cleaning
Steel (iPrimio) and thicker plastics tend to last longer, while lighter plastics can crack, according to the guide. Steel is heavier and typically costs more. Smooth basins are easier to wipe clean. The PetFusion’s “non-stick” label is the maker’s wording, not an independent performance test. Prices and review counts in the 2024 guide change over time, so check retailer pages before buying.

- Low entry for older or stiff cats: tuft + paw Cubby, Petmate XL Litter Pan, and Modkat XL with its front entry.

What these figures establish and what they do not
- Petmate and Modkat dimensions come from manufacturer listings. The other six come from the Tuft & Paw roundup, which is commercially published and includes its own Cove and Cubby. The guide discloses that relationship, and its rankings are its own assessment.
- The 1.5× length rule is a heuristic from one publisher. No independent veterinary or standards-body source confirms it.
- Product claims about durability, non-stick surfaces, and litter capacity are manufacturer or publisher statements, not results from hands-on testing.
- No independent study links box size to breed. Measure your own cat rather than relying on breed-based assumptions.
