The 8 Biggest Pit Bull-Type Breeds and What Really Makes Them Large

“Pit bull” is not one registry breed. This evidence-based guide compares eight pit bull-type or closely related bully entries, explains which measurements are actually documented and why some lines are larger without inventing a ranking.

There is no official list of the “eight largest pit bull breeds.” “Pit bull” is an everyday label used for several distinct breeds and mixed dogs, while registries publish separate standards. The eight entries below are therefore an editorial selection of pit bull-type and closely related bully breeds—not a ranking endorsed by a kennel club. Their measurements are not interchangeable: some are formal height-and-weight standards, some provide height only, and some are variety labels without a universal size specification.

The clearest answer to “how big can a pit bull get?” is that it depends on which breed you mean. A United Kennel Club (UKC) American Pit Bull Terrier is described as medium-sized and athletic, whereas an American Bully may be recognized in an XL variety. A Bullmastiff can reach 130 pounds under the American Kennel Club’s description, but treating that figure as the weight of a pit bull would confuse a broad “bully breed” category with a narrow pit bull-type one.

How to read “largest pit bull breeds”

Breed standards define particular breeds; they do not define one global pit bull category. The UKC American Pit Bull Terrier standard describes a medium-sized, solidly built, short-coated, athletic dog and warns against exaggerated specimens. The American Bully standard recognizes Pocket, Standard/Classic and XL varieties, but also warns that quality should not be sacrificed for size and mass. Those statements make two points important for any comparison: a bigger dog is not automatically a better representative, and an XL label is a variety designation rather than proof that every dog is enormous.

The table is deliberately descriptive rather than ranked. “Not stated” means the cited material did not provide a comparable figure; it does not mean that dogs of that type have no predictable size.

American Bulldog Mentioned in the UKC American Bully development history Not stated in the cited material One of the bull-breed influences identified in the American Bully standard

1. American Pit Bull Terrier

The APBT is the reference point for much everyday pit bull terminology, but the UKC does not describe it as a giant breed. Its standard calls for a medium-sized, muscular, balanced and athletic dog with a short coat and defined musculature. The standard’s direct warning is: “Quality is never to be sacrificed in favor of size.” Because the material reviewed supplies no numeric adult weight range, assigning a maximum weight would create false precision.

Its history helps explain the modern build. UKC traces the breed to 19th-century bull-and-terrier crosses in England, Ireland and Scotland. Dogs were later brought to the United States, where farmers and ranchers used them for livestock work, hunting and companionship. That history supports an explanation based on selection for an athletic, useful working body—not a claim that the breed was progressively enlarged by a measured percentage.

2. American Bully

The American Bully is the clearest example of a pit bull-type breed with an explicit larger variety. UKC says it developed as a natural extension of the APBT, with influence from the American Bulldog, English Bulldog and Olde English Bulldogge. UKC recognized the breed on July 15, 2013, and identifies Pocket, Standard/Classic and XL varieties.

“XL” should be read as a variety label within that registry system, not as an endorsement of extreme mass or a guarantee of a particular weight. The standard repeats the same principle used for the APBT: “Quality is never to be sacrificed in favor of size and mass.” Dogs within one variety can still differ because of sex, height, bone, conditioning and individual inheritance.

3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of the few entries here with a complete, directly stated UKC measurement range. The standard lists a shoulder height of 14–16 inches. It gives dogs a weight range of 28–38 pounds and bitches 24–34 pounds, while noting that appropriate weight depends on the individual’s height.

UKC traces the breed to Bull and Terrier crosses in Great Britain in the late 1700s. Those figures are ideal-standard ranges, not promises that every healthy adult will fall exactly inside them. A dog outside a printed range is not diagnosed by numbers alone; structure, body condition and veterinary assessment matter.

4. American Staffordshire Terrier

The AKC overview places the American Staffordshire Terrier in the Terrier Group and gives typical shoulder heights of 18–19 inches for males and 17–18 inches for females. The cited material does not provide a directly comparable weight range, so it would be misleading to rank this breed against entries for which only a maximum weight is available.

Its greater stated height than the Staffordshire Bull Terrier does not by itself establish that it is heavier. Height, body length, bone, muscle and condition are separate measurements. Compare dogs using the same metric and the same authority rather than assuming that a taller standard produces a heavier adult.

5. Bull Terrier

The AKC overview gives the Bull Terrier a typical height of 21–22 inches and a weight of 50–70 pounds. Those figures make it one of the largest-bodied entries in this selection for which both height and weight are stated, although it is not universally classified as a pit bull.

The breed’s history also illustrates why labels can mislead. AKC discusses the colored variety’s development through crossing with brindle Staffordshire Terriers in the early 1900s. That documented relationship explains why some readers include the Bull Terrier in broad bully discussions; it does not turn every Bull Terrier into an APBT or establish a single pit bull registry category.

6. Bullmastiff

AKC describes the Bullmastiff as the largest member of its broader bully-breed discussion, with males that may reach 130 pounds and females 120 pounds. It says the breed resulted from Bulldog and Mastiff ancestry and guarded English estates in the mid-to-late 19th century.

This is a useful boundary case, not proof that the Bullmastiff is the biggest pit bull breed. The figure belongs to a broad bully-breed grouping, while “pit bull-type” is being used more narrowly here. Calling the Bullmastiff a pit bull without explaining that category shift would answer a different question from the one most readers intend.

7. XL Bully conformation type

“XL Bully” appears in two different contexts that should not be conflated. UKC recognizes XL as an American Bully variety. Separately, the UK government publishes an XL Bully conformation standard as enforcement guidance for England and Wales under Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991; that page was last updated February 1, 2024.

The government document is not a universal breed-registry standard, and the cited material does not establish one worldwide height or weight range for XL Bully dogs. If you need a current legal answer in England or Wales, consult the government page and current regulations rather than relying on a general breed-size article. Laws and enforcement guidance can change.

8. American Bulldog

The American Bulldog is included here only as a closely related developmental influence, not as a claim that every registry or owner considers it a pit bull. UKC names it as one of the breeds that influenced the American Bully. The cited material does not give an adult height or weight range for the American Bulldog, so no size ranking is defensible from these sources.

This entry shows why an “eight largest” list can become unreliable: once related bully breeds and historical influences are mixed together, the boundaries change. A responsible comparison labels that choice instead of presenting a speculative ranking as an official fact.

Why some pit bull-type dogs are larger

The supported explanation is breed development and selection. Different breeding histories produced different body plans: the APBT standard emphasizes a medium-sized, athletic outline; the American Bully was developed from the APBT with additional bull-breed influence and now includes an XL variety; other breeds in the broader bully conversation have their own standards and histories.

That does not prove a universal trend in which all pit bull-type dogs have grown larger over time. No measured study in the cited material quantifies a historical weight increase, and there is no percentage that can be responsibly attached to “how much pit bulls grew.” Avoid claims that one purpose alone made every line larger. Selection can affect height, bone, head shape, muscle and overall mass differently, and registry standards may emphasize balance rather than maximum size.

How to compare size without being misled

  1. Name the exact breed or type. Ask whether the dog is an APBT, American Bully variety, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Bullmastiff or an unregistered mix.
  2. Identify the authority. A UKC standard, an AKC overview and a government conformation guide serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
  3. Match the measurement. Compare height with height and weight with weight. Do not set one breed’s maximum weight beside another breed’s height-only description and call the result a ranking.
  4. Separate sex and life stage. Where a source gives male and female figures, keep them separate. Adult standards do not describe puppies, adolescents or dogs carrying excess body fat.
  5. Check body condition. A scale cannot distinguish healthy muscle from obesity. Your veterinarian can assess condition and growth against the dog’s age, frame and health.

What “big” should mean for owners

Size affects practical care, but the label alone does not determine temperament, trainability or health. A heavier dog needs equipment, transport space and exercise plans suited to its frame. Select a harness, crate and restraint by measured neck, chest and body dimensions, not by a marketing label such as “XL.” Keep growth gradual in young dogs and ask a veterinarian about diet and joint-support decisions rather than trying to accelerate mass.

For identification, paperwork and housing rules, use the dog’s documented breed status where available and check local law. Visual guesses are especially unreliable among mixed dogs, because inherited traits can produce a wide range of heights and weights within the same litter.

The practical verdict

The largest number in this comparison belongs to the Bullmastiff’s broad bully-breed description—up to 130 pounds for males and 120 pounds for females—but that does not make the Bullmastiff the largest pit bull breed. Among narrower pit bull-type entries, the American Bully’s XL variety is the clearest formal route to a larger build, while the APBT itself is defined by UKC as medium-sized and athletic. The only accurate way to answer an individual dog’s size question is to identify the breed or mix, use the applicable standard and measure the adult dog directly.
