It becomes progressively pinker with age, but adults vary: some remain grey or mottled, while others are strongly pink. The change is not a uniform transformation to bright pink.
What dolphin is pink, and where does it live?
The animal commonly called the pink river dolphin is the Amazon river dolphin, Inia geoffrensis. WWF also refers to it as the boto and places it across much of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. WWF’s species page provides its name and range.

Are Amazon river dolphins born pink?
No. The Food and Agriculture Organization’s species account says young animals are mostly uniform dark grey and become progressively more pinkish as they age. The FAO description does not say that every dolphin follows the same color progression or reaches the same shade. See FAO’s account of Inia geoffrensis.
Why do some adults look so pink?
The exact cause of the full range of adult coloration is not established by these species accounts. Adults may be grey to pink above, and some are entirely pink. A specialist species summary connects pinkness with accumulated scarring and reports that mature males tend to be pinker than females. It presents healed scar tissue as a possible contributor, not as proof that scarring alone explains pink coloration. The River Dolphins species summary describes this proposed connection.

So age helps explain why pinkness becomes more apparent, but it is not a complete explanation for why one adult is much pinker than another. The available descriptions do not establish that fighting, blood vessels, water color, or temperature alone causes the color.
Do all adult pink river dolphins become bright pink?
No. Adult coloration ranges from grey to pink, and some individuals are entirely pink, according to the FAO account. “Pink river dolphin” is a common name, not a promise that every animal is vivid pink. The reported tendency for mature males to be pinker than females is a pattern, not a rule for identifying an individual by color.

What conservation concerns affect the species?
Color is only one part of the story. WWF identifies dams, river contamination, and other threats to Amazon river dolphins; it also notes that surveys help determine their status and vulnerability. Its wording should not be mistaken for a precise, current census covering every population. WWF’s species page outlines the threats, while its River Dolphins Initiative describes work with governments, communities, and partners on threats such as bycatch and infrastructure, habitat protection, and research.
