There is no single, unqualified “biggest flying bird.” The answer changes with the measurement: the kori bustard is identified by the Natural History Museum as the heaviest bird capable of flight, the wandering albatross has the greatest wingspan among living birds, and the sarus crane is the tallest flying bird. Those records describe different dimensions, and none by itself explains how an enormous bird flies.
Large birds operate with a smaller power margin than smaller fliers. They conserve energy by reducing powered flapping and using thermals, ridge lift or wind whenever conditions allow. Tracking, anatomy and aerodynamic models show how that strategy works in living giants—and suggest that extinct birds grew larger still.

Why “biggest flying bird” has several correct answers
Body mass, wingspan and standing height measure different aspects of a bird. A heavy bird needs substantial lift and muscle power. A wide-winged bird may weigh less but occupy more air with each glide. A tall bird can hold the height record without having either the greatest mass or the longest wings.
The comparison also changes when extinct species are included. Living-bird records are based on observed animals and measurements. Fossil records use reconstructed bones, statistical estimates and flight models, so they answer a different question: what an animal may have been capable of, rather than what anyone has watched it do.

| Record or comparison | Bird | Reported measurement | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heaviest bird capable of flight | Kori bustard | Up to 19 kg; wingspan up to 2.75 m | Maximum reported by the Natural History Museum, not a typical individual mass |
| Largest wingspan among living birds | Wandering albatross | Natural History Museum: average 2.5–3.5 m, largest recorded 3.63 m | BirdLife International gives a 195–335 cm range and weight up to 10 kg; the sources frame the measurements differently |
| Tallest flying bird | Sarus crane | Identified as the tallest flying bird | The cited Natural History Museum material does not give a height figure in this comparison |
| Largest fossil example discussed here | Pelagornis sandersi | Conservative reconstructed wingspan of about 6.4 m | Fossil-based estimate; flight characteristics are modeled rather than observed |
Read “largest” as a label that must be completed: largest by mass, span, height, living status, typical measurement or maximum measurement. That small qualification prevents a dramatic but misleading ranking.
The heaviest bird that can still fly: kori bustard
The Natural History Museum describes the kori bustard as the heaviest bird capable of flight. Its reported upper mass is 19 kg, with a wingspan up to 2.75 m. “Up to” matters: it identifies the largest reported individuals, not the expected weight of every kori bustard.
The great bustard belongs in the same discussion. A 2014 study published in PNAS describes great and kori bustards at about 19 kg when discussing the upper end of living bird size. That figure is useful for scale, but it does not turn every member of either species into a 19-kg flier. Bustards also illustrate why maximum body mass is not the same as a comfortable, continuously flapping flight style.
The widest living wings: wandering albatross
The wandering albatross is the living wingspan champion in the Natural History Museum account. That source reports an average span of 2.5–3.5 m and a largest recorded span of 3.63 m. BirdLife International presents the species’ wingspan as a 195–335 cm range and lists weight up to 10 kg.
These statements are not contradictory, but they are not interchangeable. One source emphasizes an average and a recorded maximum; the other gives a species range and an upper weight. A record table should preserve those qualifications instead of silently merging them into one universal number.

The albatross’s broad wings are especially valuable over open ocean, where steady winds and wave-generated air movement can provide lift. Its record is therefore tied to a flight environment as well as to anatomy: a long-winged bird is most effective when it can exploit moving air rather than beat its wings continuously.
The tallest flying bird: sarus crane
The sarus crane is identified by the Natural History Museum as the tallest flying bird. Height is measured with the bird standing, so it reflects long legs, neck and body proportions rather than the aerodynamic surface available in flight. A sarus crane can hold the height record while another species wins on mass or wingspan.

The correct species depends on the question.
Why increasing size makes powered flight harder
Flight requires upward lift to balance weight and enough mechanical power to overcome drag and accelerate the wings. As a bird becomes larger and heavier, the muscles must move more mass while the bird has less spare power relative to the demands of sustained flapping. The result is a narrowing power margin: a giant can remain a capable flier but has less room for inefficient maneuvers, repeated takeoffs or prolonged high-power flight.
Wing shape helps determine how that margin is used. A large wing can generate lift without requiring the same rapid beat frequency as a small wing, especially when the bird travels forward through air. Long, narrow wings are effective for gliding and dynamic soaring; broader wings can be useful when a bird needs to circle in rising air. Neither design removes the need for energy. It changes when and how the bird spends it.

The 2014 PNAS fossil study frames the trade-off through three broad flight modes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Flapping flight: the wings provide most of the thrust and lift, demanding the greatest continuous muscle output.
- Flap-gliding: a bird alternates powered strokes with glides, reducing the fraction of time its muscles work at high output.
- Soaring: the bird gains energy from thermals, wind gradients or other environmental lift and uses flapping mainly for takeoff, maneuvering and maintaining position when lift is unavailable.
Large birds tend toward the latter two modes because environmental lift can substitute for part of the mechanical work their muscles would otherwise have to supply. Weather therefore becomes part of the flight system. Calm air, poor thermal development or an unsuitable launch site can make a flight far more expensive than a glide in favorable conditions.
How soaring lets giant birds travel
Thermal soaring
Sun-warmed ground can create rising columns of air called thermals. A bird circles within a thermal to gain altitude, then glides forward while gradually losing height until it finds another rising column. This strategy is common in large land birds and raptors because the bird can cover distance with intermittent or minimal flapping.
Dynamic and wind-assisted soaring
Over the ocean, wind moving across waves and the surface of the water can provide usable gradients in air speed. Albatrosses exploit these gradients by crossing between faster and slower air layers, converting wind energy into forward motion. The bird still has to steer, adjust its wings and cope with turbulence; soaring is energy-saving, not effortless.
The cost of takeoff
Environmental lift does not help until a bird is airborne. A heavy bird may need a running launch, a slope, a headwind or a strong upward current. The Andean condor tracking study found that flight effort depended partly on takeoff and on the conditions available for finding updrafts. The most efficient route through the sky can therefore begin with the most demanding part of the flight: getting off the ground.

What condor tracking shows about real flight effort
A 2020 study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B used biologging to examine more than 216 hours of Andean condor flight records. Across those records, the condors flapped for about 1% of flight time. One bird traveled approximately 172 km during more than five hours without flapping.
Those observations provide a measured example of how a large soaring bird can remain airborne while using little powered flight. They do not mean every condor flight is flapping-free. The sample represents particular birds, routes and weather, and condors still need powered strokes for launch, control and periods when updrafts are scarce. The result is best read as a demonstration of what favorable soaring conditions can allow, not as a rule for every individual or every day.
The study also helps explain why a low flapping percentage does not equal independence from the atmosphere. Condors have to locate usable rising air, and their energy budget changes when they cannot. A giant bird’s flight ability is therefore a partnership between anatomy and landscape.

The fossil bird Pelagornis sandersi pushes the scale beyond living examples. The 2014 PNAS study gives a conservative reconstructed wingspan of about 6.4 m. That estimate comes from fossil anatomy, not a directly measured living bird.

This distinction is why fossil giants should not simply replace living record-holders in a list. A 6.4-m reconstructed span answers “how large might a flying bird have been?” The wandering albatross answers “which living bird has the greatest measured wingspan?” Both are valid, but they rely on different evidence.
A reliable way to compare enormous flying birds
When two sources appear to disagree, check the following six axes before choosing a winner:
- Metric: Is the claim about mass, wingspan, standing height or another dimension?
- Scope: Does “bird” mean living species only, or does it include fossils?
- Statistic: Is the number a typical range, an average, a largest recorded specimen or an upper estimate?
- Evidence: Was the animal measured directly, described from a species account or reconstructed from fossils?
- Flight mode: Does the species rely mainly on flapping, flap-gliding or soaring?
- Environment: Are thermals, headwinds, ridges or ocean winds needed for the reported performance?
Applying those checks explains why a 19-kg bustard, a 3.63-m albatross and a 6.4-m fossil bird can all appear in the same discussion without competing for one perfectly defined title.

Why the albatross record also has a conservation story
Large wings and ocean-ranging flight do not protect albatrosses from human-caused threats. BirdLife International identifies commercial longline-fishery bycatch as a major danger, along with invasive species at nesting colonies. Birds attracted to baited hooks can be injured or killed before they ever return to land.
BirdLife’s Albatross Task Force works to reduce accidental bycatch through measures intended for fishing operations. Colony protection addresses a different part of the life cycle: invasive predators or competitors can damage nests and breeding success even when adults spend most of their time at sea.
The conservation lesson is connected to the flight record. A bird adapted to travel thousands of kilometers on wind cannot simply avoid every fishing fleet or island threat. Understanding how these birds fly explains both their remarkable efficiency and why changes along their routes and breeding sites matter.
Quick Recap
The direct answer to the common questions
- What is the biggest bird that can fly? Specify the metric. The kori bustard is the Natural History Museum’s heaviest flying bird; the wandering albatross has the largest living wingspan; the sarus crane is the tallest flying bird.
- What is the heaviest bird that can fly? The kori bustard, with reported individuals up to 19 kg. That is a maximum, not a typical weight.
- Which bird has the largest wingspan? Among living birds, the wandering albatross. The Natural History Museum reports a largest recorded span of 3.63 m, while BirdLife International gives a 195–335 cm species range.
- How do the biggest birds fly? They reduce continuous flapping by using large wings, gliding and environmental lift. Takeoff and flights in weak or unsuitable air remain energetically demanding.
