The study’s model estimated an average adult length of 14.55 m for females and 8.45 m for males—but only six females were included, so the female estimate is highly uncertain. These are modeled averages, not fixed sizes for every whale shark.
Are female whale sharks bigger than males?
They may be, on average. Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are fish—the largest fish species—and a 2020 study found different growth patterns in males and females. Males grew faster early in life, then appeared to level off at a smaller size. Females grew more slowly and may reach a larger average adult size.
Meekan and colleagues tracked 54 resighted sharks at Ningaloo Reef from 2009 to 2019: 48 males and six females. Using photo-identification and stereo-video measurements, they fitted a von Bertalanffy growth model to the sharks’ repeated length measurements. The model estimated average asymptotic total length—the size approached as growth slows—rather than recording a final size for each animal.
| Sex | Resighted sharks in the study | Estimated average asymptotic total length | 95% confidence interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 48 | 8.45 m | 7.91–9.53 m |
| Female | 6 | 14.55 m | 9.65–23.26 m |
The female estimate is especially uncertain because just six females were resighted; the wide confidence interval reflects that uncertainty, and the authors note that the model is harder to validate for females with so few observations. The figures therefore support a possible sex difference in average growth, not a claim that every female is larger than every male or that 14.55 m is a confirmed female record.

How big can a whale shark get?
The study cites 18 m in total length as the largest known whale shark size. That is a cited maximum for an individual, not the model’s estimate of typical adult size. The model’s male and female figures describe estimated average asymptotic lengths in the Ningaloo study; the 18 m figure describes a maximum known size cited from earlier research.
Why might female whale sharks grow larger?
The study does not establish a definitive cause. Its authors suggest that the different growth trajectories may reflect sex-specific life-history strategies. They discuss the possibility that faster early growth in males relates to juvenile male aggregations in productive coastal waters, while females’ slower growth could persist under different habitat and feeding conditions. These are interpretations, not proven mechanisms.

What the study can—and cannot—tell us
- It can show: repeated measurements of resighted Ningaloo whale sharks were consistent with different modeled growth trajectories for males and females.
- It cannot settle: the typical adult size of females across all whale shark populations, the size of every individual, or why the sexes may grow differently.
- Its main limitation: the female estimate relies on six resighted sharks, compared with 48 males, and has a broad confidence interval.
The findings were published by Meekan and colleagues in Frontiers in Marine Science on 16 September 2020: “Asymptotic Growth of Whale Sharks Suggests Sex-Specific Life-History Strategies.”
