The Cat-Sized Caribbean Rat Wasn’t Proven Killed by a Volcano—Here’s What the Fossils Show

The extinct Caribbean rodent Amblyrhiza disappeared before documented human arrival in the northern Lesser Antilles. Fossil dates and population models instead point to severe island-area loss during last-interglacial sea-level maxima.

Amblyrhiza inundata was an extinct giant caviomorph rodent from the Anguilla Bank. The available evidence does not show that a volcanic eruption finished it, and it does not directly implicate people either. Three dated Anguilla fossil sites are older than human arrival in the northern Lesser Antilles; the leading explanation is that last-interglacial sea-level rise drastically reduced the islands’ usable area, leaving small populations unable to persist. That is a scientific model, not an observed death scene.

What animal was Amblyrhiza inundata?

Amblyrhiza inundata was a large, now-extinct caviomorph rodent. Its fossils come from Quaternary cave deposits on Anguilla and St. Martin, with a later report documenting specimens on St. Barthélemy as well. “Cat-sized” is a useful popular shorthand for the animal’s general scale, but the evidence assembled for this account does not provide a sufficiently secure kilogram range to quote. Body-size estimates should therefore be treated cautiously.

The islands were not always as separated as they are today. During lower sea levels, Anguilla, St. Martin or St. Maarten, and St. Barthélemy formed a larger land area often called the Anguilla Bank (or, in local historical descriptions, Anguillea). The Anguilla Archaeological & Historical Society explains how subsequent sea-level rise fragmented that former landmass on its history of Anguilla. For a land mammal, the important change was not merely a new shoreline: it was the loss of connected habitat and total living space.

What do the fossil dates actually establish?

Anguilla deposits cluster in marine isotope Stage 5

McFarlane, MacPhee, and Ford used uranium-series dating at three independent Anguilla fossil sites. The dates cluster in marine isotope Stage 5, a late-Pleistocene interval that predates the late Holocene period when people first reached the northern Lesser Antilles. Their 1998 paper reports no indication that Amblyrhiza survived into the late Holocene. This is a time-window conclusion, not a date for the last individual or the exact year of extinction. The study is available through Quaternary Research.

That distinction matters. A uranium-series result dates the mineral or fossil context within the limits of the method and sample, but it does not record an animal’s final day. A cluster of dates tells researchers when the known population was present at those sites. It cannot, by itself, prove that every island population disappeared simultaneously.

St. Barthélemy adds an older record, not an extinction date

A 2014 report by McFarlane, Lundberg, and Maincent described Amblyrhiza specimens from St. Barthélemy with bracketing uranium-thorium dates of about 500,000 years. In that report, these are the oldest known examples from the Anguilla Bank. “Bracketing” means the fossils are constrained between dated materials or events; it does not mean the species went extinct 500,000 years ago. The paper and its dating details are in the Caribbean Journal of Earth Science PDF.

Was a volcano responsible?

No volcanic eruption is identified as the cause in the extinction studies summarized here. The fossil dates, island geography, and proposed extinction model point to changing land area rather than to a documented eruption. The title’s volcanic wording is therefore dramatic framing, not an established event.

This does not require claiming that the islands have no volcanic history or that eruptions could never affect island mammals. It means a causal volcanic episode has not been demonstrated for this species. To establish such a case, researchers would need a defensible temporal match between an eruption and the disappearance, plus evidence that the eruption’s physical effects reached the animals’ habitat. The cited work does not present that chain of evidence.

Did humans start the extinction?

The available record does not directly support human hunting of Amblyrhiza. The Anguilla dates place the known fossil populations before human arrival in the northern Lesser Antilles, and the 1993 study by Biknevicius, McFarlane, and MacPhee says there is no direct evidence that people were responsible. Its conclusion is deliberately cautious: “Absolutely small population sizes of Amblyrhiza and severe fluctuations in island area during the late Quaternary surely affected its susceptibility to extinction, whether or not humans were ultimately responsible for the event (for which there is as yet no direct evidence).” The study record is hosted by American Museum Novitates 3079.

That conclusion is specific to this rodent. Other West Indian animals have evidence consistent with human-caused losses, but those cases cannot be used as proof that people killed Amblyrhiza. There is no demonstrated archaeological association, butchery evidence, or secure temporal overlap in the cited material. The Anguilla Archaeological & Historical Society likewise describes human coexistence with the species as unevidenced on its Anguilla history page.

The leading explanation: sea-level rise compressed the habitat

McFarlane, MacPhee, and Ford’s 1998 extinction model links the disappearance to the last interglacial’s sea-level maxima. Their abstract states: “We argue that the most probable cause of the extinction of Amblyrhiza was a failure of island populations to adjust to catastrophic reductions in available range which accompanied last interglacial sea-level maxima.” The words “we argue” signal an interpretation drawn from dating and population modeling, not a directly observed cause.

When sea level rises around a low-lying island bank, several pressures can arrive together:

  • Total area shrinks. Less land means less food, shelter, and space for burrows or home ranges.
  • Connections disappear. A formerly continuous population can be split among small islands, limiting recolonization after local losses.
  • Environmental variation intensifies. A drought, storm, disease episode, or poor food year has a larger effect when there are fewer places and animals to absorb it.
  • Recovery becomes harder. A small remnant may not produce enough surviving young to rebuild after repeated contractions.

These are the mechanisms implied by a range-contraction model; they should not be mistaken for observations of a particular famine, storm, or disease outbreak in the fossil record. The evidence supports the broad relationship between changing island area and vulnerability more strongly than any one short-term disaster.

How many animals could the islands support?

The 1993 study used empirical inputs and predictive equations to estimate population size. Its modeled results suggest that only a few thousand Amblyrhiza might have occupied the Anguilla Bank at one time, and possibly only a few hundred during some periods. These are model estimates, not a census or a count of recovered skeletons.

Small numbers matter because extinction risk rises when a population is repeatedly reduced. Random differences in births and deaths can remove a small population even when average conditions look adequate. A narrow geographic range also makes the species more vulnerable to a single island-wide change. In this case, the model combines those demographic risks with large fluctuations in island area, providing a plausible route to extinction without requiring a volcanic catastrophe or a hunting campaign.

How the competing explanations compare

Proposed cause What the dating says Evidence for human or environmental overlap Evidence type How strongly it is supported
Volcanic eruption No extinction-causing eruption is identified in the cited studies. No eruption-to-disappearance sequence is documented. Would require a directly matched geological event; not supplied by the cited record. Unsupported for this species on the available evidence.
Human hunting or other direct impact Three Anguilla sites fall in marine isotope Stage 5, before late-Holocene human arrival in the northern Lesser Antilles. No direct archaeological or temporal evidence links people to Amblyrhiza. Absence of demonstrated overlap and the statement of the 1993 authors. Unproven and considered unlikely by the dating, while not absolutely ruled out in the abstract.
Sea-level-driven range contraction Anguilla dates fit a period of major late-Quaternary island-area change. Formerly connected land was reduced as sea level rose; modeled populations were small. Inference from fossil dates, island geography, and persistence modeling. The most probable explanation proposed by the 1998 authors, but still a model rather than direct observation.

A concise timeline of what is known

Evidence or event What it contributes
About 500,000 years ago Bracketing uranium-thorium dates for St. Barthélemy specimens reported in 2014; these extend the known record backward and do not date extinction.
Marine isotope Stage 5 Uranium-series dates from three Anguilla sites cluster here, showing the species was present during that interval.
Last-interglacial sea-level maxima The period in which the 1998 model places catastrophic reductions in available island range.
Late Holocene People reached the northern Lesser Antilles after the dated Anguilla deposits; the 1998 authors found no indication of Amblyrhiza survival into this period.
1993 Biknevicius, McFarlane, and MacPhee published population estimates and noted that human responsibility lacked direct evidence.
1998 McFarlane, MacPhee, and Ford presented the sea-level-driven range-contraction model as the most probable cause.
2014 McFarlane, Lundberg, and Maincent reported the older St. Barthélemy material with approximately 500,000-year bracketing dates.

Why “cat-sized” can mislead

Common descriptions compress a complicated fossil animal into a familiar comparison. “Cat-sized” communicates that Amblyrhiza was much larger than most living rats, but it does not identify a measured adult mass, sex, age, or body-size range. The 1998 publication’s title addresses body-size variability, and the 1993 source discusses estimates, yet the material available here does not expose a robust kilogram range. A responsible account should not turn an informal size comparison into a precise weight claim.

The same caution applies to the word “rat.” It identifies the animal as a rodent in everyday language; taxonomically, the species was a caviomorph, part of a South American rodent lineage that reached the Caribbean. Its classification does not by itself reveal how it lived, what it ate, or exactly why it disappeared.

What this extinction model teaches about island species

The case illustrates why island extinctions cannot be explained by a single dramatic trigger unless the geological and archaeological record supports one. Population size, the amount of connected habitat, and the speed and magnitude of environmental change can interact over many generations. A species may vanish after a sequence of contractions even when no single catastrophic layer marks the fossils.

It also shows why chronology is decisive. If a species disappears from the dated record before people arrive, a human-killing narrative needs additional evidence to overcome that mismatch. Conversely, the absence of direct evidence is not proof that humans played no role anywhere; it is a reason to keep the claim limited to what the dates and sites establish for Amblyrhiza inundata.

Bottom line

The fossils do not show that a volcano finished this Caribbean rodent, and they do not provide direct evidence that humans started its extinction. Three Anguilla sites date to marine isotope Stage 5, while a St. Barthélemy report adds specimens about 500,000 years old. The best-supported explanation is that last-interglacial sea-level rise repeatedly reduced the Anguilla Bank’s usable range, leaving small, fragmented populations unable to persist. That conclusion is the most probable model currently presented by the cited studies—not a witnessed cause and not a precise last-survivor date.
