For most healthy cats, the ideal diet is a complete and balanced commercial cat food that matches the cat’s life stage, fed in an amount that keeps the cat at a healthy body condition, with fresh water always available. Cats are obligate carnivores with species-specific nutrient needs, but no single brand, format, calorie target, or feeding schedule suits every cat. Age, health, body condition, activity level, and how readily a cat accepts its food all change the answer. Veterinary input matters most for weight loss, illness, therapeutic diets, supplements, and home-formulated food.
What a cat’s diet has to do
A diet is adequate when it supplies every nutrient a cat needs in the right proportions, in an amount that keeps its weight stable. That sounds simple, but most feeding mistakes come from the two halves being handled separately: a food can be complete in its formulation and still be wrong for a particular cat if it is overfed, underfed, or refused.
Cornell University’s Feline Health Center describes commercial foods that carry an AAFCO nutritional guarantee as considered nutritionally complete and balanced, and it advises choosing a commercial food of that kind unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise. The Cornell “Feeding Your Cat” guidance was last updated April 30, 2026.
Check the label before anything else
Read the package in this order. The steps take about a minute and settle most of the decision.
#1 Best Overall
- Purina Friskies Cat Food Dry Seafood Sensations With Salmon, Tuna, and Shrimp Flavors provides 100 percent complete and balanced nutrition.
- This cat-tastic cat kibble dry food has an extra layer of yum cats can’t resist.
- Contains protein to help support healthy muscles, giving your cats everything they need for climbing, jumping, and exploring
- Purrfect texture and flavor, with essential fatty acids for skin and coat health, vitamin A and taurine for vision support, and antioxidants for immune support for cats
- This cat dry food is formulated for all life stages.
- Find the nutritional adequacy statement. It is usually in a box labelled “Nutritional Adequacy” or in a sentence beginning “is complete and balanced”. Without it, the food has not been shown to meet a cat’s needs as a whole diet.
- Confirm the life stage. Look for wording such as growth or kitten, adult maintenance, or all life stages. A food can be complete for one stage and unsuitable as the default for another. A kitten should not stay on adult maintenance food, and an adult should not be fed growth formula long-term without a reason.
- Read the ingredient list as a secondary check. Cornell notes that meat, meat byproducts, or seafood among the first ingredients indicates animal-source protein. That is useful information, but it does not establish quality on its own.
- Ignore premium positioning. A short ingredient list or a higher price does not prove that a food is better for a given cat. The adequacy statement and the cat’s response are the more reliable tests.
Wet, dry, or a mix
Both wet and dry foods can meet a cat’s nutritional requirements. Cornell’s guidance is that once nutritional adequacy is established, the format may reasonably be chosen according to what the cat prefers and will eat.
| Format | Where it fits | Points to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Wet (canned) | Cats with difficulty chewing dry food, and cats that benefit from extra moisture. VCA notes that a healthy cat’s water requirement may be met partly or fully by canned food. | Fresh water should still be available. Check that the can is labelled complete and balanced for the cat’s life stage. |
| Dry | Cats that eat it readily and have healthy teeth and gums. | A cat with dental pain or periodontal disease may find dry food hard to chew. Water intake deserves attention, since dry food supplies little moisture. |
| Mixed | Cats that accept both, or owners who want to combine convenience with moisture. | Count the calories from both foods together when setting portions. |
The sources do not establish that one format is universally superior, so the practical test is whether the cat eats the food completely, keeps its weight, and can chew it comfortably.
How much to feed
No single calorie figure can be safely applied to every cat. The correct amount depends on the cat’s age, health, body condition, and activity. The package feeding chart is a starting point rather than a prescription, and it is best adjusted with a veterinarian once you know the cat’s ideal weight.

Use body condition scoring
Cornell describes body condition on a 9-point scale, with 5 as ideal. At that score the cat looks proportioned, has a visible waist behind the ribs, has ribs that can be felt with only a slight fat covering, and carries minimal fat over the abdomen. Weigh the cat regularly on the same scale, and check its shape alongside the number. Excess calories can contribute to overweight, while too little food, or refusal to eat, can create serious health problems.

Cornell’s general schedule, described as broad guidelines rather than individual advice, is shown below. The Cornell guidance on feeding frequency gives the full reasoning.
| Life stage | Typical meal frequency (Cornell) |
|---|---|
| Young kittens, through six months | Three meals daily |
| Six months to one year | Twice daily |
| Most adult cats | Once or twice daily |
Treats and supplements
Treats are supplemental. Cornell’s general rule of thumb is to keep treats to no more than 10–15% of a cat’s daily caloric intake. This is a practical guideline, not a measured figure from a population study, so treat it as a ceiling to check against, not a target.

Supplements deserve the same caution. Cornell says they are usually unnecessary when a cat eats a balanced, complete diet, that they can be harmful, and that they should not be given without veterinary approval.
Homemade and raw diets
Home-cooked food
Homemade diets are hard to get right because the quantities and proportions of every nutrient must be correct, and a diet that looks wholesome can still be deficient. Cornell generally recommends nutritionally balanced commercial food. The main exception is a home-formulated diet recommended by a veterinarian for a medical purpose, which may be developed by a veterinarian certified in animal nutrition.

Cornell does not recommend raw diets. Its guidance is that raw food can carry viable bacteria, viruses, or parasites that may infect both cats and people, and that clear health benefits have not been established for raw feeding. Those are the grounds for its position. It does not mean every raw-fed cat will become ill.

When a veterinarian should set the diet
Diet needs change with a cat’s medical status, and some conditions call for a therapeutic diet rather than a general food choice. Cornell gives two examples: moderately carbohydrate-restricted diets for diabetic cats, and protein- and phosphorus-restricted diets for advanced chronic kidney disease. These are illustrations of why veterinary direction matters, not general instructions to switch a cat’s food.
A cat that refuses food and loses weight should be examined promptly. Do not treat a feeding change, a supplement, or a home-cooked recipe as a substitute for that assessment.
Comparing foods
If you are comparing two or more foods, use the same five checks for each:

The sources do not identify a best brand. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s Nutritional Assessment Guidelines (2011) are a useful reference for assessing a cat’s diet in this way, and they do not rank individual products. For a general recommendation, look for a complete and balanced cat food matched to the cat’s life stage, such as a kitten food or an adult maintenance cat food, and confirm the current adequacy statement on the package.
The VCA general feeding guidelines for cats cover the same core points for owners who want a second veterinary reference.
