Viva Raw Cat Food Review: Nutrition Claims, Ingredients and Recall History

Viva Raw says its cat recipes meet AAFCO nutrient profiles, but FDA recalls and an August 2026 warning letter shape the safety picture. Here is what the record shows.

Viva Raw makes frozen raw cat recipes that the company says are formulated to meet the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. Those claims are the company’s own, and no independent analysis of the food is available. The brand’s safety record is the bigger issue for buyers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled a Viva Raw cat product for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, and in August 2026 it issued a warning letter about contamination in other Viva Raw products. A cat owner considering this food should weigh the nutrition paperwork against that record, and should be ready to handle raw meat strictly at home.

What Viva Raw sells for cats

The company’s current cat overview lists six recipes: chicken, turkey, beef, duck, rabbit, and pork. It describes each as 98% humanely raised protein and 2% natural supplements. The brand’s FAQ, however, refers to five cat recipes. The overview is the more current listing, so it is used here, but the mismatch means you should check the recipe name on the package before you buy.

Ingredient detail is not published for every recipe in the pages reviewed. The table below shows what each recipe’s documentation covers.

Recipe Listed on the cat overview Ingredient list in the product pages reviewed
Chicken Yes Not stated in the pages reviewed; check the package label
Turkey Yes Published on the turkey product page (see below)
Beef Yes Not stated in the pages reviewed; check the package label
Duck Yes Not stated in the pages reviewed; check the package label
Rabbit Yes Not stated in the pages reviewed; check the package label
Pork Yes Not stated in the pages reviewed; check the package label

The company also sells separate “Pure” recipes. Viva describes these as prey-model base mixes with no added vegetables or supplements, meant for owners who build their own complete meals. They are not complete diets on their own, and they should not be swapped in for the balanced recipes.

Ingredients: the turkey example

The turkey product page gives the most complete ingredient list among the pages reviewed. It lists:

  • Turkey with ground bone, turkey gizzard, heart and liver
  • Psyllium husk, mussels, and oyster meat
  • Fish oil and cod liver oil
  • Egg yolk and nutritional yeast
  • Kelp
  • Taurine, vitamin E, and manganese amino acid chelate

Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats, and its presence is a sign the recipe was built with feline needs in mind. The list alone does not show that the recipe is complete and balanced; that depends on the formulation and on the nutrient analysis discussed next.

Nutrition claims and what documentation exists

Viva says each recipe report includes a guaranteed analysis, a calorie breakdown, a fatty-acid profile, minerals, vitamins, a complete ingredient list, and an AAFCO compliance statement. These reports are produced by the company. They are not independent laboratory analyses, and they do not show how the food performs in an actual cat.

The balanced recipes are the ones the company recommends for owners who want a complete diet without adding anything at mealtime. A cat that eats only one of these recipes should not need extra supplements, but a veterinarian can check that against the cat’s age, health, and weight.

Cost and feeding

Viva advertises an average cost of about $2.50 per day for a 10-pound cat eating a variety of proteins. This is an undated company estimate, not a quoted price. Feeding amounts depend on the cat’s weight, age, and activity level, and the product page gives the feeding recommendation for each. Current prices should be checked on the company’s site before budgeting.

The company suggests starting with one protein, ideally the one the cat already eats, and then introducing other proteins gradually. Moving a cat slowly from one recipe to another lowers the chance of stomach upset, and it also makes it easier to spot a food the cat does not tolerate.

Food-safety record

Three FDA actions in the record concern Viva Raw products. Only one involves a cat food directly.

Date FDA action Product and lot Finding
July 1, 2024 Recall notice Viva Turkey for Cats, lot 21244 Listeria
August 25, 2025 Recall notice Viva Chicken for Cats, lot 21975; lot 21495 covered dog and puppy foods Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes
August 5, 2026 Warning letter Viva Raw Pure Chicken Pet Food Mixer, Chunked Chicken Dog Food, and Ground Turkey & Beef Puppy Food, sampled in 2025 by state officials Salmonella Enteritidis in two samples; Listeria monocytogenes in one

The August 2026 warning letter does not name any cat product as a sample, so it does not establish contamination in the cat recipes. It does show a pattern across the company’s products, and it is the most recent regulator document about the brand.

The warning letter also states the following:

“Pets like dogs and cats can become infected by eating contaminated pet foods and humans can become infected by handling contaminated pet foods or having contact with infected pets or their feces.” (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, warning letter dated August 5, 2026)

The letter says FDA and North Carolina authorities found the pathogens could make the products injurious to health. It also says Viva Raw shares responsibility for food safety with its contract manufacturer, and it discusses the company’s corrective-action report and changes the manufacturer has reported since.

The company’s safety measures

Viva’s FAQ describes sanitation protocols, environmental testing, and batch testing for named pathogens before products ship. These are the company’s stated procedures. They are not independent verification, and the FDA findings above show that contamination reached finished products in 2025. Treat the company’s testing description as a claim to be checked against the regulator record, not as a guarantee that a given bag is free of pathogens.

The AAFCO consumer guidance on raw pet food makes the general point that raw diets require careful kitchen handling and carry cross-contamination risk. The guidance is especially concerned about children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. That concern applies to any raw food, not only to Viva’s products.

Handling raw Viva Raw safely at home

  1. Keep the food frozen until the day you feed it, and thaw it in the refrigerator rather than on the counter.
  2. Use a bowl and utensils reserved for the cat, and wash them with hot, soapy water after every meal.
  3. Wash and sanitize hands, the feeding area, and any surface the meat touched.
  4. Remove uneaten food promptly, and do not leave it sitting out.
  5. Keep the cat away from food preparation surfaces, and keep children and anyone with a weakened immune system away from raw food and the cat’s bowl.
  6. If a recall applies to your lot, stop feeding it, seal it, and dispose of it where animals and children cannot reach it. Clean and sanitize hands and the food-contact items afterward.

Who should be cautious

  • Households with young children, pregnant people, older adults, or anyone with a weakened immune system.
  • Cats with a medical condition, cats on a prescription diet, or kittens and cats in a life stage that needs closer nutritional oversight.
  • Owners who cannot keep frozen food cold or who cannot follow strict cleaning steps.

For a cat that is healthy and whose owner follows the handling steps above, the decision is a judgment call. Talk to a veterinarian before switching, and compare the recipe’s documented analysis with the cat’s needs. If the food is not right for your household, a complete diet from a company with a cleaner safety record may be a better fit.

Recipe and label checks before buying

  • Match the recipe name on the package to the current cat overview, since the site lists six recipes and the FAQ refers to five.
  • Read the current package label, because formulas can change and the product page may lag behind.
  • Check the lot number against the FDA recall notices before feeding.
  • Confirm the AAFCO statement and life stage on the label match what you need.

Viva’s documentation is detailed, and its ingredient lists are specific. The regulator record is the stronger signal, and it is the part a buyer should weigh most heavily.
