It is a major agricultural animal in many regions, an asset in some smallholder economies, and one of the most useful large-animal models for studying human disease. The 2012 publication of the first complete pig-genome sequence made those connections easier to investigate, and current pangenome research is expanding the work beyond a single reference animal.
Why is the pig important? The pig connects three subjects that are often treated separately: food production, agricultural science, and human medical research. Pigs are a major farm animal in many parts of the world, but their value extends beyond pork. Their body size, organ systems, physiology, genetics, and reproductive characteristics also make them useful comparative models for studying human disease and testing treatments.

The publication of the first complete pig-genome sequence, discussed in the original Agriculture.com/Successful Farming article on November 21, 2012, gave researchers a common genetic reference for investigating both agricultural traits and biomedical questions. More than a decade later, that work is being expanded: a USDA Agricultural Research Service swine reference-pangenome project is scheduled to develop 72 haplotype-resolved assemblies from commercially important breeds between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2027.

Before a reliable reference genome was available, researchers could still study pig genetics, but comparing results across breeds and connecting pig biology with human biology was more difficult. A complete reference sequence provided a framework for locating genes, comparing genetic variation, and investigating how inherited differences relate to traits such as growth, reproduction, immunity, nutrition, development, and meat quality.

The 2012 article reported that comparative analysis identified variants in 112 pig genes that matched variants implicated in human diseases or conditions, including obesity, diabetes, dyslexia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. That is an important research finding, but it needs to be interpreted precisely. A matching or similar variant does not mean that pigs have the human disease in exactly the same form, that the variant has the same effect in both species, or that a pig study guarantees a human treatment.
The significance was the opportunity for further investigation. When researchers find comparable genes or biological pathways in pigs and people, they can ask more useful questions about disease mechanisms, metabolism, immune response, development, and potential therapies.
Why pigs are valuable biomedical models
Pigs are large animals with body and organ dimensions that are often closer to those of humans than those of laboratory mice. Their anatomy, physiology, diet, genome, and several aspects of their growth and development can make them useful in experiments where scale matters.

The National Institutes of Health identifies swine applications in areas including:
- coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular research;
- diabetes, obesity, and hypertension;
- heart and lung research;
- kidney and pancreatic-islet transplantation;
- hemophilia; and
- other translational studies involving organs, metabolism, and disease treatment.
A peer-reviewed review of pig models also highlights practical advantages: pigs grow rapidly, have relatively short generation intervals, can produce large litters, and can be bred under standardized conditions. Their organ size can make surgical procedures, implanted devices, and transplantation research more comparable to human clinical situations than the same work conducted in a small rodent.
Rank #2
| Pig characteristic | Why it can matter in research |
|---|---|
| Large body and organ size | Allows researchers to study procedures, instruments, implants, and organ function at a scale more relevant to people. |
| Similarities in anatomy and physiology | Can improve the relevance of studies involving cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, and digestive systems. |
| Comparable aspects of diet and metabolism | Supports research into obesity, diabetes, nutrition, and related disorders. |
| Rapid growth, short generation intervals, and large litters | Makes it practical to produce and study defined groups over a comparatively short period. |
These advantages do not make pigs interchangeable with humans. Every model has species-specific differences, and results still have to be validated through additional laboratory, clinical, and safety research. The defensible claim is that pigs can provide a valuable comparative and translational step between smaller laboratory models and human medicine.
What the genome revealed about pig biology
The genome project was not limited to genes connected with human disease. It also helped researchers examine the pig’s immune system and sensory biology. USDA Agricultural Research Service reporting on the project emphasized the annotation of more than 1,400 swine immune-response genes and the similarity between important pig and human immune-related genes.

These genes are involved in the detection of odors, so studying them helps researchers understand part of the pig’s sensory biology. More broadly, the genome gave scientists a way to study how genetic differences might influence nutrition, reproduction, growth, development, basic biology, and meat science.
For agriculture, the practical value is not that a genome automatically produces a better animal. Instead, it supplies information that can support more informed breeding and disease research. Researchers can investigate genetic variation associated with economically important traits, then evaluate those findings alongside health, welfare, reproduction, management, and environmental conditions.
Pigs are important to global agriculture
Pig production ranges from small family operations and scavenging systems to semi-intensive farms and large, capital-intensive enterprises. That variety matters: the pig has different economic and social roles in different regions, and there is no single worldwide pig-production system.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, global pig stocks increased 2.5-fold between 1960 and 2010. During the same period, average carcass weights almost doubled, while total pig-meat production increased fourfold. These figures describe a major expansion in the scale and productivity of pig production over that period.
Pig meat remains one of the world’s leading meat categories. The FAO’s latest located agricultural-statistics release reports that total world meat production reached 374 million tonnes in 2024 and identifies chicken, pig, and cattle meat as the three most-produced meat categories worldwide. This is a production measure, not a claim that every country consumes pork or values pig farming in the same way.
Dietary practices, religion, culture, income, disease risk, local feed availability, and environmental conditions all influence where pigs are raised and whether pork is eaten. In some communities, pigs are important food animals and sources of income; in others, pig production or pork consumption is limited or avoided.
Pigs can also be financial and cultural assets
The pig’s importance is not measured only in tonnes of meat. In smallholder systems, the FAO describes pig keeping as an asset and a possible safety net during a crisis. A family may be able to sell an animal to meet an urgent financial need, although the value and reliability of that safety net depend on local prices, animal health, feed costs, access to markets, and other conditions.
Pigs can also have roles in ceremonies, beliefs, and local economies. Those roles are geographically and culturally specific, so they should not be generalized to all pig-keeping communities. The broader point is that pigs can function simultaneously as livestock, household assets, sources of food, and culturally meaningful animals.

The 2012 genome was a beginning, not a finished genetic map
A single reference genome is useful, but it cannot represent every genetic variant found across a species. If the reference comes from one animal, researchers may have an incomplete view of differences found in other breeds, production lines, or populations.
That is why the USDA Agricultural Research Service lists a Swine Reference Pangenome project running from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2027. The project aims to produce 72 haplotype-resolved assemblies from commercially important pig breeds. A haplotype-resolved assembly distinguishes the genetic versions inherited through the two parental chromosomes rather than collapsing all variation into one simplified reference.
Moving from one reference animal to a broader pangenome should give researchers a better view of pig diversity. It may improve studies of breeding value, disease resilience, immune response, and production traits because the reference resource will more closely reflect the range of genomes found in commercially important pigs. It is an infrastructure improvement and a research opportunity, not a promise that every trait or disease problem will be solved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What makes the pig important in one sentence?
The pig matters because it is both a globally significant food animal and a biologically informative large-animal model. Its genome helps researchers connect inherited variation with agricultural traits and compare aspects of pig biology with human disease research. Its farming role supports food systems and, in some smallholder settings, household finances and cultural practices.

Are pigs genetically the same as humans?
No. Pigs and humans share some genes, biological pathways, anatomical features, and physiological characteristics, but they remain different species. A genetic similarity or result in a pig model does not prove that a human disease has the same cause or that a treatment will work in people.
Why is a swine pangenome useful?
A single reference genome cannot capture all the variation across breeds and individual animals. A pangenome uses multiple assemblies to represent more of that diversity. USDA ARS lists a project to create 72 haplotype-resolved assemblies from commercially important pig breeds between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2027.
Why are pigs important to agriculture and food systems?
Pigs are important agricultural animals in many regions, and pig meat remains one of the world’s three most-produced meat categories. Pig keeping can also provide an asset or safety net for some smallholder households. The scale and cultural importance of pig production vary by geography, religion, economy, and local farming system.
The Bottom Line
The pig’s importance extends well beyond pork. It contributes to food and agricultural systems, can serve as an asset in smallholder economies, and offers researchers a valuable large-animal model for studying human biology. The 2012 genome sequence created the reference framework; today’s swine-pangenome work is expanding that framework to represent many breeds and genetic variants more accurately.
