On December 14, 2020, the FDA approved a specific genetic alteration in the GalSafe line of pigs for food use and as a potential source of materials for human therapeutics. The alteration disrupts the GGTA1 gene so homozygous pigs do not have detectable alpha-gal on the cells, tissues, and organs assessed. This approval applies to that pig-line alteration—not to every genetically edited pig, and not to any medicine or transplant made from the animals.
What the FDA actually approved
The FDA approved the pPL657 intentional genomic alteration in the GalSafe line of domestic pigs. It disrupts the porcine GGTA1 gene, which codes for an enzyme involved in producing alpha-gal. In homozygous pigs, both copies of the gene are disrupted.
The FDA’s stated claim concerns undetectable alpha-gal residues on biological derivatives from homozygous GalSafe pigs for food or human therapeutic source use. The trait is inherited through conventional breeding. “Approved a pig” is common shorthand; more precisely, the FDA approved a defined genetic alteration in a specified pig lineage for stated uses.
What does the alteration mean for food?
The FDA approved meat and tissues from GalSafe pigs for human food use. The agency evaluated food safety for the general population and concluded there is reasonable certainty of no harm to consumers and that the food is as safe as food from conventional pigs.

That conclusion was not a specific evaluation of safety for people with alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). Do not interpret the general-population finding as FDA establishing that people diagnosed with AGS can safely eat GalSafe pork.
The FDA approval summary also addressed an nptII antimicrobial-resistance marker in the construct. The agency assessed it as a potential hazard and concluded that the protein was unlikely to present a food-allergen or other human food-safety hazard; it also assessed microbial risk as low and mitigated under the approval conditions.
Does approval mean GalSafe pork is in stores?
No. Approval allows the stated food use, but the FDA materials do not establish that GalSafe pork is currently or broadly available to consumers. Do not assume a current retail supply based on the approval alone.

The approval summary described a maximum capacity of 1,000 pigs per year at the covered farm, which the FDA compared with less than 0.0014% of annual U.S. market hog production. Those are historical figures describing the approval’s stated operational scope, not present-day production or market share.

No human medicine, device, biologic, or transplant is approved merely because the pig alteration was approved. The FDA’s 2020 announcement discussed potential uses of pig-derived materials, including heparin, and possible use of tissues or organs. These were potential applications, not approvals of particular medical products.
The FDA approval summary says sponsors of human medical products derived from these pigs must submit applications to and obtain approval from the appropriate FDA center before those products may be used to treat people.

How does this fit FDA’s animal-biotechnology framework?
The 2020 action concerned one specified alteration, not all gene-edited animals. FDA’s current framework uses the term “intentional genomic alteration” (IGA), which includes targeted genome editing and recombinant-DNA approaches. The agency describes a risk-based approach, ranging from products for which it does not expect premarket consultation to products reviewed for approval, with requirements proportionate to product risk.
FDA issued its final guidance on the approval process, GFI #187B, in January 2025. That later guidance helps explain current policy; it should not be described as the framework under which the 2020 GalSafe decision was made.
What about labeling?
FDA says the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service administers bioengineered-food disclosure for certain human foods, while USDA regulates labeling for most meat outside that standard. The sources reviewed do not specify a special retail label for GalSafe pork, so it is not accurate to claim that every package must carry a particular disclosure.

FAQ
Are GalSafe pigs safe to eat?
The FDA concluded that food from GalSafe pigs is as safe as food from conventional pigs for the general population. The review did not specifically establish safety for people with alpha-gal syndrome.
Can people with alpha-gal syndrome eat GalSafe pork?
The FDA’s food-safety evaluation addressed the general population, not specifically people with AGS. The approval should not be treated as a specific finding that GalSafe pork is safe for someone with AGS.
Can I buy GalSafe pork?
The approval materials establish that food use was approved, but they do not establish current or broad retail availability. Check current, reliable market information rather than inferring availability from FDA approval.

Did FDA approve medicines or organ transplants from GalSafe pigs?
No. The pig alteration’s approval does not approve any human medicine, device, biologic, or transplant. Each human medical product requires its own review and authorization from the appropriate FDA center.
Did FDA approve all genetically edited pigs?
No. The decision covered the specified pPL657 alteration in the GalSafe line for stated uses. FDA’s current animal-biotechnology approach is risk-based, and other products may receive different regulatory treatment.
The bottom line
The FDA’s December 2020 decision approved one defined alteration in GalSafe pigs: disruption of GGTA1 to eliminate detectable alpha-gal on assessed derivatives from homozygous pigs. It permits food use and potential use as a source of materials for human therapeutics, but the general-population food-safety finding is not a specific finding for people with AGS, and any human medical product needs separate FDA authorization. The approval alone does not show that GalSafe pork is broadly available today.
