There is no scientifically defensible list of the 10 largest bullfrogs in the world. “Bullfrog” is a common name used for several unrelated or distantly related species, and the available records do not provide ten specimens measured with the same method. The strongest documented comparison identifies the African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) as the largest frog that is actually called a bullfrog, with a reported snout–urostyle length (SUL) of 285 mm.
This guide separates the species, measurements and records that can be supported from claims that would create a misleading top-ten ranking.

The direct answer: the African bullfrog is the largest documented bullfrog
A 2023 paper in the African Journal of Herpetology states that Pyxicephalus adspersus is “the largest bullfrog, known to reach a SUL of 285 mm.” SUL means snout–urostyle length, a body measurement taken from the tip of the snout to the rear of the urostyle. It is not the same as measuring a frog with its legs stretched out.
That statement answers the practical question “What is the biggest bullfrog?” better than an invented list of ten. It identifies one species, gives a measurement method and attributes the maximum to a dated scientific source. It does not establish ten ranked species, nor does it prove that every individual reaches 285 mm.

Why a global top 10 cannot be verified
“Bullfrog” covers more than one taxonomic group
Common names are not scientific classifications. In North America, bullfrog generally means the American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus. In Africa, the name is used for several species in the genus Pyxicephalus. The African bullfrog is also called the giant bullfrog or giant pyxie, while Pyxicephalus edulis is listed under names including edible bullfrog, lesser bull-frog and Peter’s bullfrog.
A 2023 study also recognized Beytell’s bullfrog, Pyxicephalus beytelli. The same work notes that frogs formerly treated as P. “edulis west” may represent another species, with that taxonomy requiring separate treatment. Those changing boundaries make a neat, permanent ranking especially unreliable.
Published numbers use different measurements
Sources report snout-to-vent length (SVL), snout–urostyle length (SUL), body mass or, sometimes, an overall length with the legs extended. These are different measurements. A 285 mm SUL should not be placed in a table beside an unqualified “length” that includes the legs, and a mass record cannot be converted into a body-length rank.

The available sources provide selected species accounts and individual records, not a standardized survey of ten largest bullfrogs. Some figures are adult ranges, some are reported maxima, and some lack sex, locality or collection details. Without those fields, ordering species from first to tenth would imply precision the evidence does not provide.

Documented large frogs that are called bullfrogs
The table below includes the supported entries and makes the evidence limits explicit. It is a reference list, not a ranking.
| Scientific name | Common names used in references | Reported size | Measurement and qualification | What the record does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pyxicephalus adspersus | African bullfrog, giant bullfrog, giant pyxie | Up to 285 mm | SUL; described as the largest bullfrog in a 2023 African Journal of Herpetology paper | Not a standardized world ranking of ten specimens; sex and conditions for the maximum are not supplied here |
| Lithobates catesbeianus | American bullfrog | Adults 9–15.2 cm; FAO also reports up to 20 cm and 800 g | USGS gives the adult SVL range. The Food and Agriculture Organization figure is a 2009 attributed maximum | The two sources should not be merged into one “typical maximum”; their sampling and definitions differ |
| Pyxicephalus edulis | Edible bullfrog, lesser bull-frog, Peter’s bullfrog | Not stated in the cited material | Names are documented by Amphibian Species of the World | No comparable maximum is available here |
| Pyxicephalus beytelli | Beytell’s bullfrog | Not stated in the cited material | Recognized and compared in the 2023 scientific paper | Recognition of a species does not by itself supply a world-size record |
What the American bullfrog measurements mean
The U.S. Geological Survey identifies Lithobates catesbeianus as the largest true frog native to eastern North America and gives adults an SVL range of 9–15.2 cm. That is a range for adults, not a claim that every adult approaches the upper end.
A separate 2009 Food and Agriculture Organization fact sheet reports that American bullfrogs can reach 20 cm SVL and 800 g. Because the two sources use different summaries and contexts, the responsible wording is “USGS reports adults at 9–15.2 cm, while the FAO reports an attributed maximum of 20 cm and 800 g.” It is not valid to call 20 cm the normal size of an American bullfrog or to average the figures.

How the African bullfrog figure should be read
Pyxicephalus adspersus is the entry with the clearest claim to the bullfrog size title. The 2023 paper uses SUL and reports a maximum of 285 mm, or 28.5 cm, under that measurement system. Because the paper itself calls the species the largest bullfrog, it is stronger evidence than an unsourced web list that mixes photographs, stretched-leg measurements and rounded estimates.
The number is a reported upper size, not a promise that a wild frog encountered by a reader will measure 28.5 cm. A useful record should preserve the method (SUL), the source year (2023), and the distinction between a documented maximum and a typical adult.
Why the Goliath frog must not appear in a bullfrog ranking
The Goliath frog, Conraua goliath, is a separate species and is not a bullfrog. Scientific sources identify it as the world’s largest living frog, which explains why online “largest frog” lists sometimes confuse it with bullfrogs.

Guinness World Records reports one Goliath frog specimen at 36.83 cm snout-to-vent length and 3.66 kg. The record page’s capture-year wording is inconsistent, so the measurements can be cited without repeating a year. The Society for Conservation Biology’s Africa Section also presents figures of up to 12.5 inches and 7.2 pounds, attributing them to cited literature. Those figures are useful context for the largest frog overall, but they do not change which species count as bullfrogs.

| Species | Classification for this question | Reported measurement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pyxicephalus adspersus | Bullfrog name applies | 285 mm SUL | Largest bullfrog claim in the 2023 paper |
| Conraua goliath | Not a bullfrog | 36.83 cm SVL and 3.66 kg for a Guinness record specimen | Largest-frog context, not a bullfrog entry |
How to compare bullfrog size claims fairly
1. Confirm the scientific name
Start with the binomial name, not a marketplace label or a translated common name. “African bullfrog” and “American bullfrog” refer to different genera. If a page gives only “bullfrog,” its measurement cannot safely be compared with a named species.
2. Keep the measurement type visible
Record whether the source uses SVL, SUL, total body length or mass. SUL and SVL are both body-length conventions, but they are not interchangeable labels unless the source explicitly treats them as equivalent. Overall length with legs extended belongs in a separate column.
3. Separate ranges from maxima
An adult range describes more than one animal; “up to” describes an upper report. Neither is automatically a record for the species. A table should say “adult range,” “reported maximum” or “individual record” rather than collapsing all three into “size.”

The FAO figure is from 2009, the African bullfrog statement is from 2023, and the Guinness measurement is a record-page claim. Dates matter because taxonomy and measurement practices change. If a source does not provide sex, locality or collection conditions, those fields should be marked as not stated rather than inferred.

Could researchers eventually produce a real top ten?
Yes, but it would require a purpose-built dataset rather than a collection of web claims. A defensible study would need to:
- Define “bullfrog” in advance, including whether only currently accepted species count.
- List every included scientific name and synonym so the same species is not counted twice.
- Measure specimens with one stated protocol, such as SVL or SUL, and keep mass as a separate variable.
- Record sex, life stage, locality, date and whether the animal was wild, captive or preserved.
- Distinguish a maximum verified specimen from a species’ normal adult range.
- Publish specimen-level data so another researcher can check the ordering.
Until those conditions are met, a “top 10” headline is better treated as entertainment than as a zoological result.
A practical identification and fact-checking checklist
- Name: Is the frog identified as Lithobates catesbeianus, Pyxicephalus adspersus, P. edulis, P. beytelli or another species?
- Locality: Does the claimed range fit the species and region, or is a common name being used generically?
- Measurement: Is the number SVL, SUL, mass or leg-extended length?
- Qualification: Does “up to” mean a documented maximum, and is the source named?
- Comparability: Are all entries measured the same way?
- Taxonomy: Could a provisional or newly recognized taxon be treated as settled without explanation?
Bottom line for readers asking “What is the biggest bullfrog?”
The best-supported answer is the African bullfrog, Pyxicephalus adspersus, reported at up to 285 mm SUL in a 2023 scientific paper. The American bullfrog is also large, with USGS adult SVL of 9–15.2 cm and a separate FAO report of up to 20 cm and 800 g. Other frogs carrying “bullfrog” in their common names do not have comparable size figures in the cited material. A verified worldwide list of ten therefore does not currently exist, and the Goliath frog should remain outside it because it is not a bullfrog.
