Researchers did not calculate her age from her size: they followed an identified spider in her burrow over decades. Her death was not witnessed; evidence at the burrow led the team to suspect a wasp.
Who was Number 16?
Number 16 was a female Gaius villosus, a trapdoor spider native to Australia. She lived in a burrow at North Bungulla Reserve, near Tammin in Western Australia’s Central Wheatbelt. The number was her identifier in a population study, not a name chosen for a pet.
Trapdoor spiders live in burrows, and females of this species are sedentary and remain associated with their burrows. That behavior allowed researchers to monitor individuals in a defined area over time.
How did researchers know she was 43?
Arachnologist Barbara York Main began studying the spider population in 1974. Number 16 was recorded as a young spider and was subsequently associated with the same burrow during monitoring. The research team estimated that she lived 43 years, reporting a high level of certainty based on the unusually long record of this identified individual—not a precise birthday or an age inferred from body size.

The peer-reviewed research note by Leanda Mason, Tracey Wardell-Johnson, and Main, “The longest-lived spider: mygalomorphs dig deep, and persevere”, was published in Pacific Conservation Biology in 2018. Curtin University’s April 27, 2018 announcement described the study and its significance. This is an estimate tied to long-term observation, not proof that no other spider has ever lived longer.
Did a wasp kill Number 16?
Researchers did not see her being killed. When they found evidence that she had died, the burrow appeared damaged and a wasp stinger was present. Those clues led them to suspect that a parasitoid wasp had attacked her. The evidence supports “likely killed by a wasp,” not a witnessed or certain account of the attack.

How did her lifespan compare with the previous record?
Guinness World Records identifies Number 16 as the oldest spider ever recorded on its Oldest spider ever page, checked October 4, 2026. It gives the previous comparator as a Mexican bird-eating spider estimated to have lived 26–28 years. Curtin University rounded that comparison to 28 years in its 2018 announcement. The available comparison does not establish that the older spider was tracked using an evidence base equivalent to the decades of monitoring behind Number 16’s estimate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does Number 16’s story matter?
Her remarkable age is an observation about one exceptionally well-documented spider, not a typical lifespan for every trapdoor spider or every member of her species. The study shows why sustained ecological monitoring can reveal details that a short survey would miss: how long individual animals persist, how they use habitat, and how their populations change. In a 2018 National Geographic account, lead author Leanda Mason said: “To our knowledge this is the oldest spider ever recorded, and her significant life has allowed us to further investigate the trapdoor spider’s behaviour and population dynamics.”
