Seeing bats fly over your house or garden at night usually means they are foraging nearby. Many bats eat night-flying insects, so their presence can be a welcome sign of wildlife activity and may contribute to natural insect control. It does not, by itself, show that bats roost in your home or prove they will reduce mosquitoes in your yard.
Why bats fly around houses and gardens at night
Bats are nocturnal, and many species forage for insects after dark. A yard with insects, trees, water, or other suitable habitat may be part of their feeding route. Their flight can look close to a house simply because they are hunting in the airspace around it.
An outdoor sighting is not proof that bats are living in your attic, walls, or garden structures. Bats may roost in buildings, but determining whether a building has a roost takes more than seeing bats pass overhead. For general background on bat behavior and buildings, see the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s bat guidance; its advice applies in California.
Are bats good for a yard?
Often, yes: bats are part of local wildlife and insect food webs, and insect-eating bats provide a real ecological service. The effect on any particular garden depends on which bats are present, what prey is available, and local conditions. A few bats overhead do not establish that a pest problem will disappear.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service has cited a historical, species-specific upper example of a single little brown bat eating up to 600 mosquitoes in an hour. That is not a typical rate for every bat, nor a promise that bats will remove mosquitoes from a particular yard. The figure comes from a historical tip sheet whose publication year is not established in the available record. Read the NRCS tip sheet.
For broader U.S. conservation context, the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describe ways to support bats and their habitat. Those recommendations are not guarantees about the result of an individual pest problem.

How to make a yard more welcoming to bats
Habitat changes can support bats without making pest-control promises. Choose actions suited to your region and avoid creating new hazards for bats, pets, or people.
| Action | What it can provide | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce pesticide and herbicide use | More insect prey and less potential pesticide exposure | Use targeted alternatives where practical; pest-management needs vary by property. |
| Plant regionally appropriate native plants | Habitat and food for insects that bats may hunt | Choose plants for your climate and local wildlife. Flowers that remain open or release scent in the evening can support night-flying insects. |
| Keep useful natural features | Potential habitat, including water, leaf litter, and downed logs | Balance habitat with household safety, fire rules, and local maintenance needs. |
| Limit unnecessary outdoor lighting | Less disturbance from artificial light | Use lighting only where needed and direct it toward the area to be lit. |
| Consider a bat house | Possible roosting shelter | Occupancy is not assured; seek local guidance on suitable placement and design. |
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says, “Installing a bat house is a quick and easy way to provide shelter for local bat species.” Its Backyard Bats guidance was published September 16, 2021. A bat house is an optional habitat feature, not a way to guarantee bats will move in. Bat Conservation International’s gardening guidance and the Bat Conservation Trust’s garden advice offer additional habitat ideas; plant choices should be localized.

What to do if a bat is inside or there may have been contact
A bat flying outdoors is different from a bat found indoors or a possible encounter with a person or pet. Do not touch, chase, feed, or try to capture a bat. If one is inside, keep people and pets away and contact local wildlife, animal-control, or public-health authorities for advice on safe next steps. Guidance varies by location; the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, for example, advises separating rooms, opening an exterior exit, and keeping distance when a bat is in a home.
If a person or pet may have had direct contact with a bat, promptly contact local public-health and animal-services authorities for advice. Do not assume there was no risk based only on the bat’s appearance or behavior. Rules for bat protection and building exclusion also vary by jurisdiction; UK legal guidance, for example, applies to the UK and should not be treated as law elsewhere. See the UK government’s bat protection guidance.
