One extinct ground sloth, Megatherium americanum, could weigh up to four tonnes and stand 3.5 metres (12 feet) tall on its hind legs. It was not the only giant sloth—and it was not simply a supersized version of the small tree sloths alive today. “Giant sloths” refers to many extinct species, with different sizes, ranges and ways of life. Their fossils and traces show how they lived, while their uneven disappearance across continents and islands leaves the cause an open question.
How big were giant sloths?
The largest ground sloths were enormous by comparison with living sloths, but there was no single size shared by the group. Two well-known species illustrate the range:
| Species | Estimated size | Known range |
|---|---|---|
| Megatherium americanum | Up to four tonnes; 3.5 metres (12 feet) tall when standing on its hind legs, according to the Natural History Museum’s 2018 account | Fossils found in Argentina, Uruguay and Bolivia |
| Mylodon darwinii | Estimated at 1,000–2,000 kilograms and about three metres long, according to the Natural History Museum’s current collection page | Remains found from Bolivia to southern Patagonia |
These figures describe different species and measurements: Megatherium’s height is its upright posture, while Mylodon’s figure is its length. They are not interchangeable measures, and neither should be treated as the size of every ground sloth. Sloth lineages included repeated shifts in body size; a natural-history summary links terrestrial living with gigantism and arboreal habits with smaller bodies.
What fossils reveal about their lives
Ground-sloth fossils preserve more than skeletons. Teeth, footprints, cut marks and, in rare cases, skin and dung offer different kinds of evidence about diet, movement and encounters with other animals and people.

Teeth provide clues to diet
Chemical analysis of Megatherium teeth supports a plant-based diet despite the species’ large claws. Mylodon is also described as mainly vegetarian, though the Natural History Museum notes proposals that it may have eaten opportunistically in some circumstances. The evidence supports cautious descriptions rather than assuming that every species ate exactly the same way.
Tracks record movement—and possible encounters
Footprints attributed to Megatherium in Argentina have been dated to roughly 14,000 years ago, according to the Natural History Museum. At White Sands, the U.S. National Park Service describes crescent-shaped fossil tracks attributed to Harlan’s ground sloth. The park also cites a 2018 study titled “Footprints preserve terminal Pleistocene hunt?: Human-sloth interactions in North America.” Tracks can preserve evidence of activity and possible interaction, but they do not by themselves settle why a species disappeared.

Cut marks and cave remains add context
The Natural History Museum reports cut marks on ground-sloth fossils that suggest people butchered or consumed the animals. That is evidence of human interaction, not proof that hunting alone caused their extinction.
A cave in southern Chile preserved Mylodon skin, fur and dung. These remains help researchers investigate its ecology and diet, and dung can be radiocarbon-dated. Some bones from the cave also bear tooth marks, probably from jaguars. Each clue speaks to a different part of the animal’s life; none, on its own, explains the disappearance of all ground sloths.

When did giant sloths disappear?
There is no single last date for all sloths. A 2005 synthesis indexed in PubMed reports regional last-appearance estimates based on radiocarbon dates taken directly from dung, bones or other tissue. Its abstract gives approximately 11,000 radiocarbon years BP or slightly less for North America, approximately 10,500 radiocarbon years BP for South America, and approximately 4,400 radiocarbon years BP for West Indian islands.
| Region | Reported last appearance | How to read the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| North America | Approximately 11,000 radiocarbon years BP or slightly less | Reported in the synthesis abstract as a regional estimate |
| South America | Approximately 10,500 radiocarbon years BP | Reported in the synthesis abstract as a regional estimate |
| West Indian islands | Approximately 4,400 radiocarbon years BP | Reported in the synthesis abstract; island sloths persisted later than mainland populations |
“BP” here is the radiocarbon convention used by the synthesis. These figures are regional last appearances, not one extinction date for every species. They also describe the latest dated evidence in the record, rather than proving the exact moment the last individual died. The estimates are from the paper’s indexed abstract.

Why did giant sloths disappear?
The exact cause is unresolved, and the evidence does not support one universal explanation. Climate and vegetation change, human activity and interactions between pressures all belong in the discussion, but their importance may have differed among species and regions.
| Possible pressure | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Climate and vegetation shifts | The Natural History Museum says climate change and its effects on vegetation were almost certainly partly responsible for Mylodon. | This does not show that climate alone explains the disappearance of every sloth species. |
| Human activity | Fossil cut marks suggest people butchered or consumed ground sloths, and other summaries consider human pressure. | Interaction evidence does not quantify human impact or prove hunting was the sole cause across all regions. |
| Combined pressures and regional differences | A study summary from La Brea reports that ground sloths in its dated record disappeared earlier than several other large mammals. It also highlights difficulty aligning fossil dates with environmental and archaeological records. | A regional sequence is not a complete explanation for South American sloths or a synchronized event across the Americas and islands. |
The National Park Service describes the disappearance of large Ice Age animals as debated, while a Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales summary attributes the collapse of giant continental sloths to human activity. Those interpretations underline why the evidence should be kept in view alongside the uncertainty: the records show human overlap and environmental change, but do not settle their relative contribution for every sloth lineage.
