Yes. Researchers have documented killer whales killing great white sharks off South Africa, including a filmed hunt by a single adult male orca. The evidence also supports a short-term flight response by sharks after a predation event near Mossel Bay. It does not show that orcas have displaced great whites everywhere, caused a population-wide decline, or routinely hunt adult sharks alone. And “smarter killer” is headline language: these studies did not measure intelligence against the sharks.
How South African orcas have hunted great white sharks
Two reported events illustrate different kinds of predation. In a group hunt near Mossel Bay in May 2022, video showed killer whales pushing an estimated three-metre white shark toward the surface, rolling it and biting near its pectoral fins. Researchers interpreted the behavior as incapacitation and recorded at least two, possibly three, sharks killed during an observation period of about 71 minutes. The study also described close following and evasive circling between sharks and whales. Towner et al., Ecology (2023)
A separate Mossel Bay incident, reported in 2024, involved Starboard, an adult male orca, and a juvenile white shark estimated at about 2.5 metres long. The attack, incapacitation and liver consumption took less than two minutes. This is evidence that one orca hunted a juvenile white shark without a group; it does not establish that lone orcas can reliably kill fully grown white sharks. Gennari et al., African Journal of Marine Science (2024)
Why the liver matters
The reports describe orcas consuming the sharks’ nutrient-rich livers. The 2022 researchers noted behavior consistent with earlier inferences from shark carcasses that orcas target the liver. That feeding evidence helps explain the interest in the carcasses, but it does not by itself establish how often these hunts happen.

Did the sharks leave Mossel Bay?
After the May 2022 predation, observers saw sharks flee, drone counts fell, and commercial cage-diving operators recorded no white shark sightings for 45 days. The first shark sighting returned on 1 July 2022. Researchers also reported that one tagged female was later detected about 400 km east, at Algoa Bay; the paper identifies the tag information as unpublished data. Together, these observations support a local flight or displacement response after the event. Towner et al., Ecology (2023)
They do not show that sharks disappeared permanently, quantify a national population decline, or rule out other influences on shark distribution. A gap in sightings at one location is not the same as evidence that the species has vanished from South African waters.

What is known—and not known—about the scale of predation
A 2022 research release reported 11 documented white shark deaths attributed to orca predation at that time and cautioned that the actual number could be higher because carcasses may sink or fail to wash ashore. That was a contemporaneous count, not a current total or a measure of the predation rate. EurekAlert! research release (4 October 2022)
The documented events establish that orcas can kill white sharks and that at least one South African orca hunted a juvenile alone. They do not establish how commonly solitary hunts occur or what share of white shark deaths they account for. A handful of observed events cannot show that orcas alone caused a broader decline.

Does this mean orcas are “smarter” than great whites?
No such conclusion follows from these observations. The studies document hunting behavior, not a controlled comparison of intelligence. “Smarter killer” is dramatic framing rather than a scientific result. The narrower finding is remarkable enough: South African killer whales have killed great whites, and at least one individual was observed hunting a juvenile without a group.
