A black cat is defined by its coat, not by a breed, temperament, or a fixed eye color. Under that simple appearance are interesting genetics, centuries of changing folklore, and a modern adoption problem that may be influenced by everything from superstition to poor shelter photography.
Here are 13 evidence-based facts that separate what we know about black cats from what people merely assume.

1. “Black cat” is a coat description, not a breed
Most black cats are domestic shorthairs or domestic longhairs. Those labels describe a cat’s general ancestry and coat length, not a formally recognized breed.

The Cat Fanciers’ Association explains why coat patterns and colors do not establish breed.
2. A specific genetic change can produce a solid-black coat
In domestic cats, solid melanistic coloration is associated with a two-base-pair deletion in the ASIP gene. ASIP helps regulate how pigment is distributed through the hair. When its normal activity is altered, darker pigment can dominate the coat, producing the familiar black appearance.

This is not a mysterious “black-cat gene” in the casual sense. It is a particular genetic variation affecting pigment biology. Coat color is also influenced by other genes, which is why feline color genetics can be more complicated than a cat’s appearance suggests.
The underlying research is described in this peer-reviewed study indexed by PubMed.
3. Some black cats have hidden tabby stripes
Look closely at a black cat in strong sunlight or from an angle and you may notice faint stripes, swirls, or spots. These are sometimes called ghost markings.
A cat can genetically carry a tabby pattern while also having solid pigmentation that largely conceals it. The markings may become easier to see in bright light, when the coat is wet, or in kittens whose color has not fully developed.
Ghost stripes do not necessarily mean the cat is changing from black to tabby. They are usually evidence that more than one coat-pattern instruction is present beneath the visible color.

4. Black fur can turn brown or rusty in sunlight
Dark fur may develop a brown, reddish, or rusty cast after prolonged exposure to sunlight. Ultraviolet light can bleach the hair shaft, making the coat look less intensely black. Older cats may also develop gray hairs, particularly around the muzzle, or experience gradual changes in coat quality.
A little sun fading is not automatically a health concern. However, a sudden, patchy, or dramatic coat change deserves attention. Hair loss, scaling, itching, sores, weight loss, or changes in appetite alongside altered fur should be discussed with a veterinarian. Coat appearance can change with skin disease, parasites, nutritional problems, hormonal disorders, or other medical issues.

5. Black cats do not all have yellow eyes
Gold and copper eyes are common associations, but black cats can have green and other eye shades too. Eye color depends on genetics, and breed standards may specify a particular range.
For example, the Bombay standard allows eyes ranging from gold to copper. A black domestic cat is not required to match that standard and may have a different color entirely.
Eye color is separate from coat color, so it cannot reliably identify a breed. A sudden change in an adult cat’s eye color, cloudiness, redness, or unequal pupils is different: those signs should be checked by a veterinarian.
6. The Bombay was designed to look like a miniature black leopard
The Bombay is a real breed, but it was not discovered as a naturally occurring population of black cats. Breeder Nikki Horner developed it in the United States during the mid-20th century by combining black American Shorthairs with sable Burmese cats.

That history explains why Bombays can resemble many black domestic cats while still being a distinct pedigreed breed. TICA’s Bombay profile provides more detail on the breed’s development and characteristics.
7. Coat color cannot predict personality
A black coat is not a reliable personality test. It cannot tell you whether a cat will be affectionate, shy, active, independent, vocal, or easy to handle.
People often assign personality traits to appearances, and those expectations can influence how they interpret an animal’s behavior. A quiet cat may be labeled mysterious; a nervous cat may be called unfriendly; a confident cat may be described as aloof. None of those judgments comes from the color black itself.
To assess a cat, look at its behavior over time and consider its history, socialization, age, health, and environment. A shelter’s notes and a supervised interaction are much more useful than coat color.
8. Black-cat adoption bias has been documented, but the data are mixed
Research has found that people may rate photographs of black cats more negatively on some measures, including willingness to adopt. That supports the concern that appearance-based bias can affect a cat’s chances. A peer-reviewed study indexed by PubMed reported this kind of negative rating.
But it would be inaccurate to say that every study finds black cats are always adopted last. Shelter-outcome research has produced mixed results, as discussed in this study available through PubMed Central. Adoption rates can be affected by age, sex, health, season, location, length of stay, shelter policies, marketing, and the number of cats available at the same time.
The careful conclusion is that black cats may face an appearance-related disadvantage in some settings, not that coat color guarantees a worse outcome.
9. A photograph can make a black cat harder to “read”
Dark fur can reduce the visual details people use when judging a cat from a photograph. Facial expressions, eye direction, and body contours may be less obvious, particularly in a dim image or a picture with a cluttered background.

Recent research found that viewers were less likely to consider black cats adoptable in photographs and were more likely to assign them negative emotions. The study is available through PubMed Central. That does not demonstrate a difference in the cats themselves. It shows how the presentation of the image can shape the viewer’s impression.
Shelters can help by photographing black cats in natural or well-balanced light, using a contrasting background, focusing on the eyes, and including several images that show relaxed body language. A short video can reveal far more personality than one dark still photograph.
10. A black coat does not mean a cat is aggressive or unfriendly
Claims that black cats are aggressive, ominous, or unusually mysterious are cultural stereotypes, not behavioral facts. The same applies to the opposite claim that all black cats are especially gentle or lucky.

Black cats have not carried one universal meaning across cultures. In parts of the United States, Belgium, and Spain, traditional beliefs have associated them with bad luck. In the United Kingdom and Japan, encountering a black cat is often treated as lucky.
These beliefs are cultural stories, not biological effects. A cat crossing a path cannot cause good or bad fortune, and there is no evidence that a black coat changes a cat’s ability to affect events.

12. The “witch’s cat” image is historically specific
The idea that black cats have always been linked with evil or witchcraft is an oversimplification. Cats were revered in ancient Egypt, where they were connected with deities and valued as protectors against pests.
European associations between cats, witchcraft, and evil became stronger during later historical periods. They were not an unchanging belief shared by every culture or every era. The familiar Halloween image is therefore the result of particular historical and cultural developments—not proof of an ancient, worldwide view of black cats.
13. Black cats have dedicated appreciation and adoption days
In the United States, Black Cat Appreciation Day is observed on August 17. The ASPCA describes the observance. In the United Kingdom, Cats Protection promotes National Black Cat Day on October 27.
These campaigns are intended to challenge superstition, draw attention to adoption bias, and give black cats positive visibility. They do not exist because black cats have special medical or behavioral properties. A black cat still needs the same routine veterinary care, nutritious diet, parasite prevention, enrichment, and responsible indoor or supervised outdoor management as any other cat.
If you are adopting, consider the individual animal’s health, energy level, behavior, and compatibility with your household—not the color of its coat.
What not to assume about black cats
| Claim | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| “Black cats are healthier.” | Coat color alone is not a general health guarantee. |
| “Black cats are always harder to adopt.” | Some studies find a disadvantage, but shelter data are inconsistent and influenced by many other factors. |
| “Every black cat is a Bombay.” | Bombay is a specific pedigreed breed; most black cats are not Bombays. |
| “Black cats all have yellow eyes.” | Eye color varies. Gold, copper, green, and other shades can occur. |
| “Black cats are naturally aggressive or mysterious.” | Temperament must be assessed from the individual cat’s behavior and history. |
How to evaluate a black cat fairly
- Meet the cat in person when possible. Do not make an adoption decision from one photograph.
- Watch body language. Look for relaxed posture, normal movement, interest in surroundings, and a willingness to interact at the cat’s own pace.
- Ask for history. Find out how the cat behaves with adults, children, other animals, handling, play, and routine changes.
- Check health information. Ask about veterinary examinations, vaccinations, sterilization, parasite control, and any known medical needs.
- Use good lighting for photographs. If you are listing a cat for adoption, show the eyes and facial features clearly and include images of the cat behaving naturally.
FAQ
Are all black cats Bombays?
No. “Black cat” describes coat color, while the Bombay is a specific pedigreed breed developed from black American Shorthairs and sable Burmese cats. Most black cats are domestic shorthairs or domestic longhairs.
Do black cats have a certain personality?
No reliable personality type is determined by coat color. Temperament is shaped by the individual cat’s genetics, socialization, health, history, and environment.

Sun exposure can bleach dark hair and make it look brown or rusty. Aging may also cause fading or gray hairs. Sudden or patchy changes, especially with itching or hair loss, should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
What colors can a black cat’s eyes be?
Black cats may have gold, copper, green, or other eye colors depending on their genetics and, in some cases, their breed. Black fur does not require one particular eye color.
The Bottom Line
Black cats are not a breed, a personality type, or a sign of luck. Their color comes from genetics, may reveal hidden tabby markings or sun fading, and can look different from one cat to the next. The most important facts are practical ones: assess the individual cat’s behavior and health, avoid superstition, and remember that a clear photograph—or a coat color—cannot replace a real evaluation of the animal.
