Do not bring home a guinea pig until you can provide compatible companionship, a roomy and secure enclosure, constant grass hay, vitamin C, daily observation, and access to a small-mammal veterinarian. These animals can be gentle, entertaining companions, but their needs are more involved than a small cage and a bowl of pellets.

Plan on a commitment that may last 5–10 years. RSPCA UK says guinea pigs typically live 5–6 years, while RSPCA Australia advises planning for the possibility of 5–10 years. Individual lifespan varies, so the longer range is the safer basis for housing, budgeting and family decisions.

First decide whether your household is ready

Expect a long, active commitment

Guinea pigs are not short-term starter pets. Their care continues through school changes, moves, holidays and changing work schedules. RSPCA UK describes them as active for up to 20 hours per day, so they need opportunities to move, forage and investigate rather than being left in a small, bare cage.

Before adoption, agree who will provide food and water, clean the enclosure, monitor health, arrange transport to a veterinarian and pay for routine and emergency care. Check your rental agreement, household rules and whether everyone who may handle the animals understands gentle handling. A guinea pig should not be acquired as a surprise gift unless the responsible adult has already accepted these obligations.

Plan for companionship

Guinea pigs are social animals. RSPCA UK advises that they should not be kept alone and are generally happiest with at least one friendly companion. A veterinarian or clinical animal behaviourist may advise separate housing in an exceptional case, but isolation should not be the default plan.

Ask a reputable rescue or veterinarian to confirm each animal’s sex; sex can be difficult to determine in young guinea pigs. Same-sex groups or appropriately desexed animals help prevent unwanted litters. Do not house guinea pigs with rabbits: their diets, communication and disease risks differ, and a rabbit can injure a guinea pig.

Compatibility matters as much as the number of animals. A rescue can explain an individual’s personality, history, health needs and known relationships, and may arrange introductions or visits. Have enough space and equipment to separate animals safely if a pairing fails or one needs medical isolation.

Set up the enclosure before the animals arrive

Choose space, security and exercise over a tiny starter cage

The accommodation should be large, secure, dry and easy to clean, with room for every animal to walk, rest, eat and exercise without blocking another’s access. The sources reviewed do not establish one universal minimum measurement: the appropriate footprint depends on the number of guinea pigs, their size, the design of the enclosure and the exercise opportunities available. Check current guidance from a local rescue, veterinarian or animal-welfare authority before buying.

Use a roof, secure panels or another escape-resistant design where necessary. Check for gaps that could trap a head or foot, sharp wire ends, unstable lids and access by dogs, cats or children. Place the enclosure away from direct sun, draughts, excessive heat, loud machinery and fumes. Guinea pigs need a dry, well-ventilated environment, not a damp shed or an exposed outdoor run.

Provide bedding that is safe to eat and breathe around

RSPCA guidance emphasizes clean, safe bedding. Dust-free hay can be used as an edible bedding material; fleece and shredded paper are also listed by RSPCA Australia as suitable examples when managed hygienically. Avoid fluffy nesting materials that can entangle limbs or be swallowed, and avoid sawdust or wood shavings when local welfare guidance identifies them as unsafe. Softwood products such as pine are specifically cautioned against in RSPCA guidance.

Build in refuges and enrichment

Guinea pigs are prey animals and need places to retreat. RSPCA UK recommends refuge areas exceeding the number of animals by one; for two guinea pigs, provide at least three usable refuge options so one animal cannot monopolize every hiding place. Tunnels, covered houses and divided visual barriers should have more than one exit where possible, preventing an animal from being cornered.

Rotate safe enrichment instead of filling the enclosure with disposable toys. Offer tunnels, chewable untreated materials, forage opportunities and objects to explore. Inspect every item regularly. Some plastic toys can be chewed into pieces and swallowed, so remove anything cracked, splintered or small enough to ingest. Scatter a portion of appropriate food through hay or safe paper to encourage natural foraging.

Handle at ground level and support the whole body

Approaching from above can frighten a guinea pig. Sit or crouch at the animal’s level, approach from the front, speak quietly and allow it to see your hands. To lift, support the chest and hindquarters together, keep the body close to you and lower it carefully onto a stable surface. Never pick up a guinea pig by a limb, scruff or loose skin, and do not allow children to carry one without direct adult supervision.

Feed a hay-centred diet every day

Make grass hay the constant staple

Good-quality grass hay should be available at all times. RSPCA Australia describes hay as the high-fiber cornerstone that supports dental wear and digestive function. Replace damp, mouldy or heavily soiled hay immediately and keep a clean supply accessible in more than one location if companions tend to guard resources.

Add vitamin C, greens and measured food

Guinea pigs cannot synthesize vitamin C, so their diet must supply it. RSPCA UK recommends constant grass and/or good-quality hay, a fresh portion of grass-based nuggets and suitable washed leafy greens each day. RSPCA Australia advises that high-quality guinea pig pellets should be measured and used as a supplement, not as the main food.

Guinea Pig Cages Small Animal Playpen, Pet PlayPen for Guinea Pig & Rabbit
  • Protective Liner – This guinea pig cage is designed with a waterproof liner placed outside the frame, effectively preventing pets from chewing and ensuring long-lasting use.
  • Secure Hook Connection – The liner attaches with hooks, keeping it stable while making removal and reinstallation simple. Smart design makes cleaning your rabbit cage faster and easier.
  • Convenient Door Opening Design – The waterproof liner includes a reserved space for the cage door, allowing it to open smoothly so pets can freely enter and exit without obstruction.
  • Customizable Layout – Create the perfect habitat with freely connectable panels. Whether you need a spacious guinea pig cage, a compact rabbit cage, or an expandable bunny cage, the modular design adapts to your space and your pet’s needs.
  • Multi-Pet Friendly – Ideal not only as a guinea pig cage but also as a rabbit cage, or even a small pet playpen. A versatile choice for families seeking a secure and cozy home for their furry companions.

Use guinea-pig-specific food formulated with vitamin C rather than a generic rodent mix. Do not rely on a pellet bag’s vitamin-C claim indefinitely: vitamin C can decline during storage, so ask a guinea-pig-experienced veterinarian how to provide a dependable source for your animals and region. Wash fresh produce, introduce unfamiliar foods gradually and remove leftovers before they spoil.

Avoid abrupt changes and muesli mixes

Ask the rescue or previous carer exactly what the guinea pigs eat. Keep that diet initially, then transition gradually if a change is needed. A sudden switch can reduce appetite or upset digestion. RSPCA Australia advises avoiding muesli-style mixes, which allow selective feeding and can produce an unbalanced diet.

Never feed lawnmower clippings. Many garden plants and human foods are unsafe; because toxicity depends on the plant and amount, do not experiment with an unfamiliar item. Before offering a new green, confirm it with a current veterinary or rescue feeding guide, particularly if a guinea pig has a medical condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provide clean water continuously

Fresh water must be available at all times. Check the bottle or bowl every day for leaks, blockages, algae, bedding contamination and freezing or overheating. If you use a bottle, verify that each guinea pig can operate it and consider a second source so one animal cannot prevent another from drinking.

Make health monitoring part of the routine

Learn each animal’s normal pattern

Guinea pigs can mask pain and deterioration. Daily observation should include appetite, drinking, droppings, movement, grooming, breathing and social behaviour. Spend enough time watching to notice whether an animal is eating hay, not merely whether a bowl is empty. Record a baseline weight and ask your veterinarian how often to weigh at home.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if a guinea pig stops eating, becomes unusually quiet, hides more than usual, has fewer droppings, breathes abnormally, develops diarrhoea, limps, shows discharge or has another sudden change. Reduced eating can become dangerous quickly in a small herbivore. Do not wait for a convenient appointment when pain, injury or a major behaviour change is apparent.

Arrange veterinary care before adoption

Find a veterinarian experienced with guinea pigs or other small mammals before bringing them home. Ask about an initial examination, annual checkups, dental assessment, parasite control and emergency procedures. RSPCA UK advises weekly checks of the front teeth and nails, with a veterinarian guiding treatment when trimming or dental care is needed.

Never give medication prescribed for another species or another guinea pig unless your veterinarian specifically directs it. Products that are safe for dogs, cats or people can be dangerous to guinea pigs, and an apparently minor symptom may require urgent treatment.

Budget for the whole cost, not just adoption

No reliable universal guinea-pig price is established because adoption fees, equipment and veterinary charges vary by location. RSPCA UK notes that adoption fees differ by centre and species, and the fee is only one part of ongoing ownership. Price each category locally before committing:

Cost category What to include in your estimate Why it matters
Initial setup Large secure enclosure, flooring or bedding, hideouts, hay racks, water equipment, food dishes and a carrier Unsafe or undersized equipment creates welfare and escape risks.
Recurring supplies Grass hay, measured guinea-pig food, fresh greens, bedding, cleaning materials and replacement enrichment These are routine expenses, not optional extras.
Routine veterinary care Initial examination, annual visits, nail or dental advice and parasite treatment when indicated Small mammals benefit from preventive care even when they look well.
Unexpected treatment Emergency consultation, diagnostics, medication, dental work or hospitalization Illness and injury can require same-day decisions.
Travel care A responsible sitter, boarding, transport and familiar supplies The animals still need daily care when you are away.

Ask a clinic for typical consultation and emergency charges in your area, and consider how you would fund an unexpected bill. RSPCA guidance also recommends considering insurance where it is available and suitable, but terms, exclusions and availability differ by country.

Choose an adoption route that gives you usable information

A reputable rescue or shelter can discuss compatibility, personality, known health needs, current diet and the animals’ history. Staff can also advise on enclosure design, bedding, enrichment and daily care. Some organizations arrange visits so you can meet an individual or bonded pair before deciding.

  • Has a knowledgeable person confirmed each guinea pig’s sex?
  • What health history, dental information and previous treatments are documented?
  • Are the animals already living successfully as a pair or group?
  • What food, hay and bedding are they using now?
  • What support is available if compatibility or health problems arise?
  • What are the local adoption, transport and veterinary costs?

A low fee does not remove the cost of a suitable enclosure, continuous hay, routine care or emergencies. If a source cannot answer basic questions about sex, diet or health, pause and consult a rescue or veterinarian before taking the animals home.

Prepare for holidays, moves and emergencies

Arrange a named caregiver before you travel, and write down feeding amounts, water checks, cleaning instructions, medication directions and the veterinarian’s contact details. Familiar surroundings, normal routines, bonded companions and familiar items can reduce stress if boarding is unavoidable. The caregiver should know the warning signs that require an immediate call rather than waiting for your return.

Keep a secure carrier ready, along with absorbent bedding, hay and a way to maintain a comfortable temperature during transport. Have a plan for power failures, extreme weather, evacuation and a move to housing where guinea pigs are permitted. A pet that depends on daily feeding and observation cannot be left to an occasional neighbour’s visit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical readiness check

Bring guinea pigs home only when you can answer “yes” to all of these questions:

  • Have you committed to a possible 5–10 years of care?
  • Do you have a compatible companion plan and enough space to separate animals if necessary?
  • Is the enclosure assembled, secure, dry, roomy and stocked with safe refuges?
  • Do you have an uninterrupted supply of grass hay, clean water, suitable vitamin-C sources, measured food and washed greens?
  • Have you identified a guinea-pig-experienced veterinarian and set aside emergency funds?
  • Does every adult in the household agree about daily duties, handling and costs?
  • Is there a written plan for travel, illness, evacuation and temporary care?

If any answer is “no,” delay adoption while you fix that gap. Preparation is easier and less expensive before an animal is dependent on you.

Bottom line: prepare first, then adopt

Guinea pigs can be rewarding companions when their social, environmental and medical needs are planned from the start. The responsible sequence is to secure suitable companionship, build the enclosure, establish a hay-centred diet with vitamin C, find veterinary support and budget for routine and emergency care. Once those pieces are in place, choose animals whose sex, health history and compatibility you can verify through a reputable rescue or qualified veterinarian.
